MTH2021 Linear Algebra with Applications Problem Set 6

School of Mathematical Sciences, Monash University

These problems cover the work from Week 6, and will be discussed in labs during Week 7. Students are strongly advised to work through all the problems.

1. (A&R 4.6, Ex. 3) Find the coordinate vector for p relative to the basis S = {p1 , p2 , p3 }, when (a) p(x) = 4 3x + x2 , p1 (x) = 1, p2 (x) = x, p3 (x) = x2 . (b) p(x) = 2 x + x2 , p1 (x) = 1 + x, p2 (x) = 1 + x2 , p3 (x) = x + x2 . 2. (A&R 4.6, Ex. 11) Let V be the space spanned by f1 (x) = sin x and f2 (x) = cos x. (a) What is dim(V )?
