Brunos Art and Sculpture Garden

The months that followed the familys arrival in Marysville were intensely creative and busy. The first major task was to establish the gallery by filling it with over two hundred works they had brought over from Belgium. At the same time a new purpose built workshop was constructed for Bruno on the end of the gallery. The design allowed visitors to pass through the workshop on their way to the garden and experience the creative process as well as the end result. Unlike his exhibitions in Belgium, the works on show in the gallery were to be permanent attractions and not for sale. After settling in, the family focused their attention on the mammoth job of turning the large area of garden and forest into a unique attraction. Three hundred square metres of hand-laid paving stones, hundreds of plants, eight tons of fine gravel and fifteen life size terracotta sculptures later, Brunos art and sculpture garden was opened to the public. Inspired by the beauty of his surroundings Bruno spent his days expanding the garden and creating many new and colourful characters from terracotta. His love for life and its connection with nature would influence the theme of the garden, with each sculpture carefully blended into its natural setting. Bruno found that the subtle art of developing a relationship between the artwork and its surroundings had the ability to give a sense of atmosphere and individual myth to the sculptures. Essential to the magic of the garden is the absence of labels or signposting on or around the works, allowing the character of the sculpture to be freely interpreted by the beholder.
