User's Manual
1.0 Introduction
This Profis Anchor Users Manual was created to make the use of Hiltis Profis Anchor easier for the end user. In order to make information on specific functions of Profis Anchor quickly accessible, this document has been divided into many very specific sections and subsections. When being used in electronic format, the manual has many hyperlinks that allow the reader to jump around the document quickly when another section is referenced. At the bottom of every page is a hyperlink that takes the reader back to the Table of Contents. From the Table of Contents, the reader can quickly hyperlink to a specific section of the manual. Profis Anchor is a connection design program developed to help the engineer distribute loads at a connection and select an appropriate anchor to carry these loads. Profis Anchor provides quick and easy access to anchor information, solutions to anchoring needs and the necessary information to specify Hilti medium to heavy-duty mechanical and chemical (adhesive) anchors. Through the preferences window, the user can select their default language as described in Section 3.2.2.4. The default language and other appropriate defaults based upon region may also be selected when first opening the Profis Anchor by selecting the appropriate region. This region may be changed as described in Section 3.2.3.2. With access to a vast database, Profis Anchor is able to accept a variety of input data in either metric or English System units, including dimensional constraints, physical properties, loads and anchor configuration. With this input, Profis Anchor is able to perform calculations that output the following:
Suitability of selected anchors given design constraints1 The design load for each anchor selected The applicable edge and anchor spacing factors for the given design constraints The reason for failure to select an anchor, if any Recommended baseplate thickness given the design constraints2. Data in a choice of either English (in., lb) or metric units (mm, kN)
1. Suitability is determined by: (1) user-inputted loads being less-than-or-equal-to the published allowable load contained in the current Hilti Product Technical Guide (PTG), after application of PTG edge-distance and anchor-spacing load reduction factors for user-inputted dimensions; and (2) the application being suitable for the general type of user-inputted loading conditions, in accordance with the Anchor Selection Guide in the PTG. 2. Baseplate thickness based on finite element analysis. For additional details, click the Help tab in the Profis program, select Methods, and then Finite Element.
Profis Anchor provides the user the capability to design anchorages using data from the Hilti Product Technical Guide or from ICC-ES evaluation reports, as well as using ACI 318 Appendix D design provisions. Easy access to the published data, upon which this version of Profis Anchor is based, is explained in Section 3.3.3.

The data, calculation methods, and formulae contained in this program was current as of the date of publication. Updates and changes may be made based on later product testing, advances in the state-of-the-art, or revised evaluation reports/approvals. For verification that the data is current, in the U.S.A. call Hilti, Inc., Customer Service at 1800-879-6000 x 6337 or visit the website at www.us.hilti.com; in Canada call Hilti (Canada) Corporation at 1-800-363-4458 or visit www.ca.hilti.com. The user may obtain the latest version of Profis Anchor by clicking on Update on the main window as explained in Section 3.2.3.5. NOTE: When you use the Update function, technical data and underlying anchor theory will be updated to the information contained in the then-most-current Hilti Product Technical Guide and product evaluation reports/approvals. You should review this information to ensure it continues to meet your specific needs and application. All anchor load values found in this program represent the results of testing performed by Hilti or other independent test organizations. Locally requisitioned base materials were used and because of variations in materials, on-site testing is necessary to determine characteristic performance at a specific site. This program is designed to provide anchor system suggestions for typical applications. A design professional should always review the specific application to determine suitability and adequacy, and verify the accuracy of the calculations. NOTE followed by bolded text is used throughout this manual to draw attention to particularly important information necessary to avoid unintended results.

When I make changes to windows in the program do those changes become the default settings? Only the window locations on startup and changes made in the Preferences tabs will remain the default the next time the user opens Profis Anchor (Refer to Section 3.2.2.4). I am trying to download Product Technical Guide, Approvals, and/or CAD details. How do I access these documents? Section 3.3.3, Providing Access to Information, shows where, in Profis Anchor, to access this information. However, if you chose the minimal program installation option these documents were not downloaded due to file size. The user may download these items from the Tech Center on the Hilti website, www.us.hilti.com or, to add these items to Profis Anchor, click on Update as described in Section 3.2.3.5. Ive created my construction. How do I calculate? There are several ways to run a calculation. Please reference Section 3.3.1.1. Ive created my construction, but all of the calculation icons are red. What is the issue? The issue could be one of several. By looking at the Information Window described in Section 3.2.1.3.2, the user can find the reason, if any, a calculation is not possible. Ive input a load, but the information window still says, no or unsuitable load has been set. What do I need to do? Please refer to Section 3.2.1.1.9 Loads Tab. The user must check or uncheck the ASD checkbox. Ive run my calculation. Where do I get my results? Can I create a report? The results can be found in several places on the Product Panel. Section 3.3.1.2 discusses in details how to read these results. Reports are possible and the details of how to create a report are discussed in Section 3.3.2. Ive run a calculation. How can I narrow the number of anchor solutions? Please reference Section 3.3.1.3. Actually, the user may filter anchor possibilities based upon name, type, installation, application criteria, etc. prior to or after running a calculation. The user may also filter the anchor solutions based upon the results of the calculations. Does filtering affect my calculations? NOTE: Filtering does not affect the construction or the calculations. Filtering only limits the number of possible anchor solutions. Are there any limitations in Profis Anchor with regards to bolt patterns? Yes. These limitations are discussed in more depth in Section 3.2.1.3.4. Essentially, the default calculation methods in the Hilti North American version of Profis are limited to a 4x4 bolt pattern and the anchors must be orthogonal to each other (i.e. no circular of triangular bolt patterns). Profis Anchor does have a calculation method called SOFA that will calculate almost any pattern up to 99 anchors. SOFA is an extension of the ETAG (a European based code). It is anticipated that in the near future, the default methods found in the United States region will function with these anchor patterns, as well. 4 of 40 Back to Table of Contents

User's Manual based on LRFD. In the United States region, this method is ACI 318/AC193 calculation method. NOTE: The LRFD governing load is assumed to be determined using the load factors from ACI 318-02 Chapter 9, Section 1605.2.1 of the IBC, or Section 1612.2.1 of the UBC. The phi factors from ACI 318-02 D.4.4 are used appropriately. Furthermore, the user may specify the loads as short-term loads by checking the Seismic load for LRFD; Wind or Seismic loads for ASD checkbox. If this box is checked, Profis Anchor will only calculate with the anchors/calculation methods that are recognized for use with seismic and/or wind loads. With regards to the ICC Inspected and ICC Uninspected calculation methods, the loads will automatically be increased as stated in the products individual ICC-ES evaluation report (in most cases this is a 33 1/3% increase, but could be less in some cases review the applicable ICC-ES report for details). If the HNA calculation method is used, no calculation will be performed. With regards to the ACI 318/AC193 calculation method, the program will automatically use the k-factor for cracked concrete and will also apply an additional 0.75 factor as described in Section D3.3.3 of ACI 318.
When clicked these icons take the user to individual windows that are nearly identical to the tabs found in the Construction Wizard and described above. However, these individual windows do not require the user to fill out all of the windows for changes to be implemented. The user must only click OK on each window to have the changes made in that window implemented. As with all windows, if the user clicks on Cancel the changes made will not be implemented. Please find below the icons, their name (tooltip), the corresponding Construction Wizard tab(s) and the sections above to reference for a detailed description. Project Settings Includes the Project Description, Design Method, and Environment tabs from the Construction Wizard, which are discussed in Sections 3.2.1.1, 3.2.1.2, and 3.2.1.3. Base Material Settings Includes the Base Material tab from the Construction Wizard, which is discussed in Section 3.2.1.1.4. Baseplate Settings Includes the Baseplate tab from the Construction Wizard, which is discussed in Section 3.2.1.1.5. User's Manual The user simply types in the load and strikes the Enter key on the keyboard. NOTE: Profis Anchor does not recognize commas. The user should not include any commas in load input data. Once a load is inserted an arrow showing the direction of the load appears with the load value. If the direction of the load is not correct, the user may either reenter the load as a negative or simply left click on the arrow. Furthermore, in the small window above, if the user clicks on , the Loads Window as described in Section 3.2.1.2 will appear. The default view within the Work Area is the isometric view. The user can change this view to a 2-D section view (ideal for standoff fastenings) or a 2-D plan view (ideal for freehand baseplate drawing) by left clicking on the smaller windows in the bottom right corner of the Main Window, shown in Figure 10 below. Once the user left clicks on one of these, the Work Area will change to the new view and the isometric view will replace the view in the smaller window. The user may switch the view in the Work Area between any of the three views and all of the data changes made in any view are made in all views.

By left clicking the icon once, the user can place one anchor onto the Work Area by dragging the cursor over the work area and left clicking one more time when the anchor is in the proper position. Below the Work Area, there is a y- and x-coordinates box that tell the user the current location of the cursor. 17 of 40 Back to Table of Contents
User's Manual
The free anchor placement function may be turned off by clicking on the icon again. To modify the position or placement of an anchor or delete it, the user can simply click on the anchor in the Work Area. Profis Anchor will allow the user to place as many anchors as desired and in any shape, but the United States region methods will only calculate up to a 4x4 anchor matrix. It is recommended to use the matrix icon described below. Currently, any non-matrix patterns (e.g. circles or triangles) must be calculated using the calculation method SOFA, which can be accessed by selecting the World Wide region. SOFA stands for SOlution for FAstening and is an extension of the ETAG, which is a European Code. It is anticipated that in the near future, the methods found in the United States region will function with these anchor patterns. The information window (as discussed in Section 3.2.1.3.2) will tell the user when the construction requires the use of the SOFA calculation method. The user needs to scroll down for this information. The icon is used to create an anchor matrix. The user left clicks this icon once, moves the cursor over the Work Area and left clicks again. Then, when the user moves the mouse, red lines form a box. Below the Work Area and next to the y- and x-coordinates, parenthesis will appear showing the number of columns and rows of anchors which will be created when the user left clicks once again. For example in the picture below, the anchor pattern will be a 4x4 pattern.
Once the user has created the matrix, they may delete individual anchors to create different patterns (for example a 8-bolt square pattern around the profile or a U-shape around the profile). Once again, for the time being, the United States region default calculation methods are limited to a 4x4 matrix and the anchors need to be orthogonal to each other (e.g. no circular bolt patterns). It is not critical to center the matrix on the baseplate. Once the user creates one of the standard baseplates as discussed in Section 3.2.1.3.3 or creates one as described the anchor matrix will automatically be centered about the centroid of the baseplate. This is not true when using the polygon baseplate icon as discussed below. The icon is used to draw a polygon baseplate. The user left clicks on the icon once, moves the cursor to the desired starting position, left clicks again, moves to the next desired baseplate node, left clicks again, and continues this process until completed. To close the baseplate, the user simply right clicks. Profis Anchor has no real limitation with regards to baseplate shapes except that it must be able to find a centroid. 18 of 40 Back to Table of Contents

(eq. 1)
User's Manual The remaining two icons do not become active until the second icon is activated. The third icon, , applies a grout pad under the baseplate. Profis Anchor assumes the application of a grout pad provides rotational restraint and changes the value of M from 1.0 to 2.0 in equation 1 above, reflecting contraflexure in the bolt. The fourth icon, , places a nut and washer at the base material surface. This changes your n value from 0.5 to 0, where = z + (n*d). For ASD calculations, a global Factor of Safety of 1.7 is applied to the nominal bending resistance calculated in Equation 1. For LRFD calculations, a phi factor of 0.8 is applied. Furthermore, in the ACI 318/AC193 calculation method, a phi factor of 0.8, expressed as , is applied to the steel shear capacity of the anchor per ACI 318 Appendix D.6.1.2. Equation 1 above accounts for tension/shear combination, so this capacity is not used in the combined tension and shear loading equation. Note: Profis Anchor always checks for bending using equation (1) above when a Stand-off is specified and factors in these bending stresses in determining the suitability of an anchor solution.

It is a row from left to right of the following headings: File, Edit, View, Help, and Update. Click on any of these words for the associated drop-down menu.
3.2.3.1 File
The File Menu simply gives the user the capability to open a new project, open an existing project, save the current project, or exit Profis Anchor.
3.2.3.2 Edit
The Edit menu allows the user a different way of performing the same functions handled by the icons to the left of the work area. Two items of note in the Edit menu are the Undo and Select Region selections. The Undo is a common Windows function, but it is important to note that the user may only Undo one step as each screen shot takes a large amount of memory. The Select Region selection brings up the window that comes up when the user opens the program for the first time and allows the user to choose the desired region. The choices are Canada (English), Canada (French), United States, and World Wide.
3.2.3.3 View
The View menu simply allows the user to change the views in the Work Area as discussed in Section 3.2.1.3.1.
3.2.3.4 Help
The Help menu, shown below, allows the user to access many items that can help develop a better understanding of Profis Anchor.

3.3.1
Before getting into the details of the icons and clicks that allow the user to obtain and filter results, it is important to understand the cell system used by Profis Anchor. The Cell area of the Product Panel is shown in Figure 15. Product solutions are provided on the left hand side of the product panel. Cells are provided on the right hand side. Each cell represents a possible solution. In Figure 15, the current cell selected is the Hilti Kwik Bolt 3 Expansion Anchor 1/2 inch diameter using the ICC Inspected calculation method.
25 of 40
The first icon, , will calculate only the active cell. For example, in Figure 15, a calculation would only be run for the Hilti Kwik Bolt 3 Expansion Anchor 1/2 inch diameter size using the ICC Inspected calculation method. If the icon is red, there is a reason why the active cell will not calculate. The user can find the reason why the cell will not calculate in the Information Window found in the upper left hand corner of Back to Table of Contents
User's Manual
the Product Panel and directly under the calculation icons on the Main Window. If the icon is green, then a calculation is possible. The second icon, , will calculate all of the anchors for the design method that is active. For example, in Figure 15, a calculation would be run for all of the anchor possibilities using the ICC Insp. calculation method. Once again, if the icon is red, something is missing or incorrect and the user needs to reference the Information Window. The third icon, , will calculate all of the anchors using all of the design methods. Be aware that if the load is input as an ASD load, as discussed in Section 3.2.1.1.9, the ACI/AC193 calculation method will not calculate. If the load is input as an LRFD load the Hilti ASD, ICC Insp., and ICC Uninsp. calculation methods will not calculate. As stated above, the Calculation Icons are found on the Main Window, which allows the user to do everything except create a report from the Main Window. When the user clicks one of the Calculation Icons on the Main Window, the Product Panel will automatically appear with results. The user may view what anchor and method are being calculated on the Main Window in the Information Window found directly below the Calculation Icons.
The number of individual Method Calculators depends upon the number of active calculation methods the user has available. The default methods for the US region are shown above. The user may add or remove the active calculation methods as discussed in Section 3.2.2.4.1. If the user left clicks on one of the Method Calculators, all of the anchors for that method will be calculated. Note: The user may have to click the Method Calculators twice (to activate method and run the calculation).
User's Manual
The number given in the cell is the largest percentage of either the Normal (tension) Force, Shear Force, or Interaction (combined loading), of the two. These results can be quickly seen under the Results Tab found directly below Cell Area of the Product Panel.
In the example above, the controlling force is the Normal Force and it has a 10% usage, so the number provided in the cell is 10. Some of the numbers given as a result will be green and some will be blue. Both colors represent the percent use as provided above, but the green simply means either the anchor has one embedment depth or that the minimum embedment depth for the anchor was used; and the blue means that an embedment greater than the minimum embedment for the anchor was used. Other items that may appear in the cell are and . When a appears, the anchor has been overloaded past the allowable design capacity, and this will also be seen under the results tab as the rows will become red. When a appears, the anchor or design method is not appropriate for the application for some reason. A note will appear under the results tab explaining the reason. For example, if the user tried to calculate with the Hilti ASD calculation method with cracked concrete, the following would appear. 27 of 40
User's Manual
When the user single clicks on a calculated cell, the embedment depth to generate the results discussed above can be found in the Information Window found in the left hand corner of the Product Panel. The Information Window is discussed in detail in Section 3.2.1.3.2.
3.3.1.3.1
The user may filter based upon results only after a calculation has been run. After running a calculation for all the anchors in a specific calculation method, the user may click on the blank squares below the Method Calculators and a will appear (as shown below) and Profis Anchor will only show the anchors with positive results (i.e. Profis , or inappropriate, , anchors). Anchor does not show overloaded,
If a calculation was run for more than one method, the user may filter results for all the methods for which calculations were done and obtain only anchor solutions that have positive results in all of the calculated methods. As discussed in Section 3.2.2.4.2, the user may make this filter happen automatically when a calculation is run. Although clicking on the icon, , does not actually filter results, it can help the user find the anchor with the highest percent usage or efficiency. Note: Clicking this icon will not necessarily provide the best overall Hilti solution, but simply provide the solution with the highest percent usage.

3.3.1.3.2
The user may filter based upon specific design criteria or needs before or after a calculation has been run. Using the tabs on the left hand side of the Product Panel the user may filter anchors using criteria such as
Product Name - This tab provides Hilti designation of all anchors along with their industry nomenclature. The user may select one or more -Profis will show all selected anchors. Anchor Classification - Classifies anchors as heavy, medium or light duty anchors. It is possible that the same anchor can fall under two categories. The user can only select one item under this tab. Anchor Type - Filters anchors by the type (e.g. Mechanical, Adhesive, Cast-in Headed Insert). The user can only select one item under this tab. Load Bearing Mechanism Under this tab, the user can specify the desired type of load bearing mechanism (e.g. Undercut, Friction, Bonded, etc.). The user may select more than one under this tab, but, unlike the Product Name, the selections are treated as and conditions, and Profis Anchor will only provide anchor solutions which meet all selected criteria. For example, if the user chooses Undercut and Bonded, Profis Anchor would only show the anchors that are both an Undercut and Bonded. Installation/Application Criteria Under this tab, the user can select from a long list of possible installation/application criteria. Like the Load Bearing Mechanism above, multiple selected criteria are treated as and conditions, with each anchor solution meeting all criteria. Anchor Material Under this tab, the user can choose simply carbon or stainless steel or choose a specific anchor material and obtain the anchors that are made of the selected material. Geometrical Under this tab, the user may limit anchor selection by the baseplate geometry (e.g. hole diameter and/or baseplate thickness). NOTE: These filters only limit the anchor selection. Filters DO NOT modify or affect the anchor calculation. For example, if the user inputs a baseplate thickness of 0.50 inches under the Geometrical tab, but has a baseplate thickness of 0.25 inches on the Main Construction Window, Profis Anchor still performs its calculations based on, and reports, the baseplate thickness as 0.25 inches. 29 of 40 Back to Table of Contents
User's Manual
This window, shown below, provides the user with several possible ways of setting up the report.
The user may select either a Summary or Detailed report. The detailed report is the default and recommended format. The user can also choose whether they want to create an Adobe Acrobat report by checking the PDF checkbox. If the user chooses to calculate the required Baseplate thickness, Profis Anchor will run a finite element (FE) calculation and will provide a recommended baseplate thickness on the report. The recommended baseplate thickness on the report will be the greater of the thickness determined by the FE calculation or the actual baseplate thickness input by the user on the Main Window. Profis Anchor uses the outside dimensions of the profile selected as part of the FE calculation and will not run the baseplate thickness calculation if No Profile is selected. 30 of 40 Back to Table of Contents
User's Manual
NOTE: To verify the FE calculation is suitable for your specific application, details of how the calculation is performed can be found using the Menu Bar under Help/Methods/Finite-Element Calculation. The user can either save an Adobe Acrobat file by clicking the Save to button icon. An Adobe Acrobat or can just preview the report by clicking the report can be saved after being previewed.
The Create Report icon, , simply generates a preview report for the active cell with the characteristics determined by the other icons. The PDF format on/off icon, , like the PDF checkbox on the Create Report Window discussed in Section 3.3.2.1, determines whether or not the preview report is brought up as a .pdf file. If it is brought up as a .pdf file, it can be saved after being opened. The Summary/Detailed icon, or , simply determines whether the report is a detailed or summary report. It is recommended to use the detailed report. The Baseplate thickness calculation on/off icon, or , determines whether or not the report will include a recommended baseplate thickness, as discussed above. Profis Anchor will not run the FE calculation if No Profile is selected. NOTE: To verify the FE calculation is suitable for your specific application, details of how the calculation is performed can be found using the Menu Bar under Help/Methods/Finite-Element Calculation. The Calculate baseplate thickness icon, , does not actually affect the report. This icon simply runs the FE calculation and provides a recommended baseplate thickness. This allows the user to adjust the baseplate thickness on the Main Window before generating a report. Unlike the recommended baseplate thickness given in the report, the thickness given when this icon is clicked is based solely on the FE calculation and does not adjust if the user-inputted thickness on the Main Window is greater than the FE calculation result. 31 of 40 Back to Table of Contents

At this point the report shows the calculations performed on the critical anchor. The critical anchor is commonly the anchor which sees the most load. However, the critical anchor could be the anchor with the most reductions due to spacing and edge distance reduction factors. The first table provided for the loads on the critical anchor is a summary table (10) that quickly compares the tension and/or shear load applied against the published allowable tension and/or shear load capacity (strength) of the anchor. The percent usage is shown for both tension and shear (no bending) and shear (bending) (refer to Section 3.2.1.3.6 for more details on stand-off calculations), using the nomenclature N and V, respectively. Combined loading is shown in the next table (11), and the percent use is shown as N,V. The highest percent use is the number shown in the cell on the Product Panel as discussed in Section 3.3.1.2. 10
11 Next, the details of the anchor strengths found in the summary table are shown. The first table in the details presents the reduction factors (12) to be applied to the concrete capacity of the anchor. For example, the fA,N is the spacing reduction factor for tension and should be multiplied with the fR,N (the edge distance reduction factor for tension) and then multiplied with the all Nc shown in the second table (13). In conditions where concrete failure is the controlling mode, this will provide the user with the Nrec also found in the second table and then presented as the capacity shown in the summary table. However, if the allowable steel strength, all Ns, is the controlling failure mode (i.e., less than the reduced allowable concrete capacity), than Nrec will simply be equal to all Ns. In the example in tables 12 and 13 shown below, the equation would be as follows. 34 of 40 Back to Table of Contents

Note: Steel and Pull-out failure are checked for the anchor with the highest applied load as shown in the tabulated distribution of loads. Concrete failure is checked for the entire connection. If the capacity given is for the highest loaded anchor, it is denoted with a superscript h (e.g. ). The Tension Steel Failure capacity of the highest loaded anchor, , is the Steel Strength in Tension, taken from the Design Information table in the ICC-ES report, multiplied by the 0.75 phi factor, also given in the Design Information table. The Tension Pull-out Failure capacity, , is the appropriate (cracked or uncracked concrete) Pullout Strength, taken from the Design Information table in the ICC-ES report and adjusted for concrete strength, multiplied by the 0.65 phi factor. The Tension Concrete Capacity is calculated per the equations provided in ACI 318 Appendix D.5.2.2 and the individual ICC-ES reports. An example problem can be found under the Help Menu by selecting Example Calculations. After the details of the tension failure mode checks, the user can see the summary table for shear (18). Like the tension summary table, the shear summary table quickly presents the results of the different failure mode checks for shear (Steel Failure, Pryout Failure, and Concrete Edge Failure or Breakout). If a stand-off is specified, Profis Anchor also checks for shear bending (refer to Section 3.2.1.3.6 for more details on stand-off calculations).

Below the shear summary table are the details of the individual shear failure mode checks. The checks are Steel Failure (19), Pryout Failure (20), and Concrete Edge Failure (21). 19

The Shear Steel Failure capacity of the highest loaded anchor, , is the appropriate (seismic or no seismic) Steel Strength in Shear, taken from the Design Information table in the ICC-ES report, multiplied by the 0.65 phi factor, also given in the Design Information table. The Shear Pryout Failure capacity, , and Shear Concrete Edge Failure capacity, , are calculated according to ACI 318 Appendix D and the individual ICC-ES reports. An example problem can be found under the Help Menu by selecting Example Calculations. Note: Profis Anchor stops calculating Shear Concrete Edge Failure capacity when the edge distance is greater than 10,000 mm (394 in.). The default edge distances in Profis Anchor are greater than 10,000 mm. Therefore, the Shear Concrete Failure capacity will be checked only if a different edge distance is input by the user. Be aware, due to the nature of the calculations given in ACI 318 Appendix D, the input of large edge distances can result in very large Shear Concrete Edge Failure capacities for single edge conditions (in which case Shear Steel Failure or Shear Pryout Failure would most likely control). Under the shear details is a table (22) showing the combined tension and shear load check using either the 5/3 exponent or the tri-linear method. NOTE: Profis Anchor uses the least conservative of the two equations for the check. 22
Finally, after all of the details showing the check for the LRFD calculation, the report presents the allowable tension and shear capacities for the anchorage (23). The allowable loads are calculated by dividing the controlling failure mode capacity by the -factor provided in the individual ICC-ES reports for the anchor.
