1. Introduction

1.1

Background Tan Sri Datuk Hj. Mustapha Kamal is a graduate from University of Malaysia

majoring in historical studies. At 1970s, after he graduated from University of Malaya, he served the governmental sector in the state of Selangor at the District and Land Office as Assistant District Officers. He then was appointed to be Deputy Commissioner of Lands & Mines Selangor. Afterwards, he switches from governmental sector to private sector which he then became the Managing Director of Shah Alam Properties Sdn. Bhd.

At these early stages of his career, Tan Sri Datuk Hj. Mustapha Kamal work hard and diligently to ensure it is a must for a beginner to strengthen his work quality, skills, knowledge, experiences and expertise in order to increase the confident level and self esteem in developing new business. These sides of him lead to the establishment of EMKAY Group Company at 1983.

Through several experiences he have gained in both private and government sector in property development industry for almost 21 years, Tan Sri Datuk Hj Mustapha Kamal was known as an active and practical Executive Chairman in supervising and conducting the companys operations. Moreover, he also has invented the companys mission and vision as he also shares his experiences and knowledge in the industry towards his companys staff.

Apart from that, Tan Sri Datuk Hj. Mustapha Kamal also contributes on international and local real estate industry. Furthermore, he is a Director of South-

South Corporation Berhad (MASSCORP), Director of Executive Committee of SouthSouth Association of Malaysia (MASSA), National Coordinator for Africa.

At March 15 2004, Tan Sri Datuk Hj. Mustapha Kamal was awarded the recognition of "Adjunct Professor" by Universiti Utara Malaysia, Sintok, Kedah. He also sits on the Board of Trustees of the Perdana Leadership Foundation. 1.2 Organisational Background Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mustapha Kamal bin Haji Abu Bakar is a founder of EMKAY Group. EMKAY Group is one of the earliest property developers in Malaysia. The businesses under EMKAY Group operation are including residential, commercial, resort and ICT developments. At the moment, the group has invented a few big projects which are:1 2 3 NeoDamansara in Damansara Perdana NeoCyber, MKN Embassy Techzone in Cyberjayaand Pulau Banding Development in Tasik Temengor, Gerik, Perak.

Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mustapha Kamal is the strength behind EMKAY Group success. He is the type of entrepreneur who is dedicated and committed to his jobs. Furthermore, he also has the visionary direction ability which had change EMKAYs growth into a renowned property developer locally and internationally. The Gross Development Value (GDV) of the companys properties developed are estimated to be RM10 billion comprising over 50,000 units of residential and commercial properties and 5 million square feet of office space. Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh was the first main discovery project which has developed the foundation for the following growth of the EMKAY Group. The projects which have been developed are reported to be the first ever large-scale privatised property development scheme in Selangor. Therefore, the denationalize scheme was established is to invent a prosperous township with a lively and colourful community. Meanwhile, the company planned to a greater extent. The EMKAY Group wanted to expand their business by developing more on the property development project locally and also internationally. The project focused on the area of residential and commercial property management, infrastructure work, building and

maintenance of public amenities, golf course developments. The EMKAY Group also involved in enhancing the tourism industry with hotels and public attractions among the notable townships and tourism development. The tourism industry projects are including Damansara Perdana, Damansara Damai, Taman Bunga Raya, Bandar LembahBeriah, Cyberjaya (the ICT hub of the nation), Bukit Merah Laketown, Langkawi Lagoon Resort, Taiping Golf Resort and the Belum Rainforest Resort in the eco-tourism destination in Pulau Banding,Gerik, Perak. As time goes by, the company have continued to grow and always depends on its companys visions Building a Better Tomorrow Today as for the encouragement and its role in fulfilment of national aspirations. The EMKAY Group also focus on building communities, ensuring an economically viable and sustainable development. The company also taking positive steps in the protection and conservation of the environment. Relying on to this principle, EMKAY Group has built a Green Building which was recognised by the US Green Building Council and awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold status the Bangunan Lestari Kumpulan EMKAY (BLKE) in Cyberjaya. 3. Achievements As the founder and chairman of one of the premier property developer, EMKAY Group, Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mustapha Kamal is known to be diligence and capable leader of the organisation. The following are the achievement of Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mustapha Kamal:1. In 1995, he was awarded the Outstanding Entrepreneur of Selangor by the Malay Chamber of Commerce for the State of Selangor 2. In 1997, the FIABCI awarded him with the Property Man of The Year Award and the Construction Industry Outstanding 3. In 2001, he was awarded as Personality of the Year Award by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) 4. In 2002, he received the Dewan Perniagaan Melayu Malaysian (DPMM) Fellowship Awar from the D.Y.M.M. Yang Di-Pertuan Agong 5. In 2003, he was appointed to received the Anugerah Khas Tokoh Maal Hijrah 2003 from the Raja Muda of Perak 6. In 2004, he was appointed as the Professor Adjunct, a recognition given by Universiti Utara Malaysia, Sintok, Kedah, until March 2008. 7. In 2005, he was awarded the Platinum Award by the Small Medium Industry Association of Malaysia 8. In 2006, he was awarded as the Presidential Award from Malaysian Business Malay Chambers. 9 Tan Sri was appointed to be a Special Officer to the then Chief Minister of Selangor, YAB Dato' Haji Hormat Rafei, while still being employed by Shah Alam Properties. 10 He sits on the Board of Trustees of Yayasan EMKAY, Pulau Banding Foundation, Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation, Perdana Leadership Foundation and Yayasan Bersamamu TV3
