OBJECTIVE The purpose of this experiment is to determine which acts as a better source of energy, nuts or alcohol. II. PROCEDURE Score:______ Date Submitted:_______

Part A: Measuring the Energy in Nuts 1. Determine the combined mass of your nut, nut holder, and watch glass 2. Arrange your nut on the nut holder as shown below.

3. Pour 50mL of room temperature water in your can, record the initial water temperature, and set-up the can as shown below

4. Grab your matches and set the nut on fire. As soon as it is lit, record the time to the nearest second. 5. Position the bottom of the can in the flame of the burning nut, but not close enough to put out the flame. 6. Allow your nut to burn until it goes out. As soon as the nut stops burning, record the time. 7. Record the temperature of the water in the can. 8. Calculate the change in temperature of the water in the can. 9. Measure and record the mass of the nut and nut holder again. 10. Calculate the change in mass of the nut Part B: Measuring the Energy in Alcohol 11. Repeat steps 1 to 10 but instead of a nut use an alcohol lamp. Allow the alcohol to burn for exactly 3 minutes 12. Record your data.

RESULTS In the first part of the experiment, our group used the cashew nut as a

source of energy to heat the water inside the can. The temperature of the water inside the can rises from an initial temperature of 27 C to 40 C after three minutes. Meanwhile, when our group used the alcohol burner as a source of energy, the temperature rose from an initial temperature of 27 C to a final temperature of 50 C, which gives us the change in temperature of 23 C. The change in temperature of the first part of the experiment is 13 C which is less than the change in temperature when the group used the alcohol burner. V. DISCUSSION

During the experiment, the increase in temperature of the water manipulated by the heat was 13 C and the increase in temperature of the water manipulated by the alcohol burner was 23 C which indicates that the final temperature has a difference of 10 C. Only some of the factors contributing to this result are the specific amount of alcohol used and the small size of the nut. For the specific amount of alcohol used, the height of the flame was gradually affected because if the alcohol used was lesser, the intensity and height of the flame will decrease. As for the size of the nut, the intensity of the flame was also consistently affected because if the nut used was larger, the flame would be stronger and the duration/length of the time produced by the nut would be longer.
