RACE and AFFRMACT You can use crosstabulations to find out. a. State a hypothesis about the relationship between RACE and AFFRMACT. African Americans are more in favor of preferential treatment than Whites and others. b. Which of these variables would you regard as the independent variable, and which as the dependent variable? The independent variable is the race of the respondent and the dependent variable would be rather or not the respondent favor preferential treatment also known as affrmact. c. Now, use SPSS to crosstabulate the variables and hand in the resulting table with your work. Follow the convention of assigning the independent variable to the columns and the dependent variable to the rows of the table. Is there an association between RACE and AFFRMACT? That is, do the percentage distributions of the dependent variable vary across categories of the independent variable? Explain. Those that have higher percentages for the favoring of preferential treatment are associated with black respondents. The second highly favorable race was the other respondents. Whites are greatly opposed of preferential treatment. However even though Black respondents topped the percent of strongly supportive they also have a considerable amount of respondents that were opposed and strongly opposed of favorable treatment. The amount of opposed and strongly opposed respondents is greater than those that are supportive and strongly supportive in every race. d. It's possible that the association between RACE and AFFRMACT might vary across categories of a third variable. For example, does level of education alter the relationship between RACE and AFFRMACT? To find out, add EDUC as a control variable and run the Crosstabs procedure again. Does the association between RACE and AFFRMACT vary across levels of education? The level of education the respondents had did produce various changes in their responses. African Americans had almost 100% opposed responses and some levels with White respondents had almost 100% for the favorable treatment.
