Migrant Hostel Peter Skyrznecki Context - Migrant hostel was written around 1949-51 in Parkes.

- It tells of his life and thoughts during his two year stay at the hostel. - First part of his journey. Concepts - the past affects sense of belonging in the present - belonging comes from a sense of security - time and attitude can overcome barriers - acceptance and understanding of a situation can help one belong - belonging to a particular religion. Techniques/how - war imagery of partitioned and sanction shows the war is still very much a part of his life in his mind - contrast between negative connotations such as noone and the personified barrier at the beginning of the text evolve to a more positive connation of we in the last stanza. - similie of the birds shows he does not accept, comparing himself to a bird of passage, constantly changing and left with no understanding. My response - agree that the past affects ones present sense of belonging. It isnt easy to shut out emotional feelings, all humans can cling to the past. Belonging is not only a physical condition, but an emotional state. - time will definitely change things as belonging is a process, always continuing. - he lacks understanding and acceptance of his life. Hope comes through in reference to the homing bird, which will eventually find its feet. - his environment is not conclusive to belonging as he is being constantly monitored in a hostel.
