COMPETENCY THE CONCEPT

In recent times a lot of research is going on the issue of competency based techniques. Lot of resources is being spent to perform competency mapping, adopting competency based interview techniques. The need to occupy and retain new talents at critical positions with advantage of having efficient Human Resource have compelled firms to be more competency driven. Many Researchers have given different opinions on the concept of competency based models. Some of them have considered KSA-where K- Knowledge, S-Skill, A-Abilities, whereas another gave KSAO where K-Knowledge,S-Skill,A-Abilities and Oother characteristics. But the most comprehensive Model was given by Mc McClelland KSA where K-Knowledge, S-Skill, A-Attitude; Based on this the concept competency has been explained beautiful below. THE CONCEPT OF COMPETENCY AND ITS RELATION WITH KSA

Example to explain the concept of Competency There are 3 professors who have been asked to teach Human Recourse Management at post graduation level. PROFESSOR - 1 Has the complete knowledge of the subject Has the attitude and willingness of sharing his knowledge with others But is unable to express and explain due to lack of ability to communicate

PROFESSOR 2 Has the complete knowledge of the subject Is able to explain the concepts effectively to the students. But is not satisfied as he does not have the willingness to teach at this level. PROFESSOR 3 Is able to explain the concept effectively to the students. Has the attitude and willingness of sharing his knowledge with others. But does not possess adequate knowledge of the subject. In all three above cases professors are incompetent to teach the subject because in each case something is missing in terms of Knowledge, skill, attitude and thus output will differ in all the cases. Hence we can say that KSA is the initial element of competency and in order be competent one must possess all these elements because even if one is missing result is not competent. Therefore competency is the knowledge, skill or attitude that enables one to effectively perform activities of a given occupation or function to the standards expected in employment.
