Functions of the Endocrine System

Water balance Uterine contractions and milk release Growth, metabolism and tissue maturation Ion regulation Heart rate and blood pressure regulation Blood glucose control Immune system regulation Reproductive function control It secretes hormones

Endocrine glands

Pituitary Gland
Secretes
Growth hormone targets- most tissue Thyroid- stimulating hormone(TSH) -thyroid gland Adrenocorticotropic(ACTH) -adrenal cortex Melanocyte- stimulating hormone(MSH)
-melanocyte in skin

Luteinzing hormone(LH)
- ovary in females; testis in males

Pituitary Gland
Interstitial cell stimulating hormone(ICSH) - ovary in females; testis in males Follicle- stimulating hormone(FSH) -follicles in ovary in females; seminiferuos tubules in males Prolactin -ovary and mammary in females; testis in males Antidiuretic hormone(ADH) -kidney Oxytocin -uterus; mammary gland

Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands

Thyroid secretes Thyroxine and triiodothyronine -most cell of the body Calcitonin -primarily bone Parathyroid gland Parathyroid hormone -bone, kidney

Adrenal Gland
Adrenal medulla Epinephrine mostly, some norepinephrine
heart, blood vessel, liver, fat cells

Adrenal cortex Mineralocorticoids (aldosterone)

kidney, small intestine, sweat glands

Glucocorticoids (cortisol) Adrenal androgens

most tissue

Pancreas
Insulin -Liver, skeletal muscle, adipose tissue Glucagon -liver

Testis in Males
Testosterone -most tissue

Ovaries in Females
Estrogen and progesterone - most tissue

Thymus Gland
Thymosin - immune tissue

Pineal Gland
Melatonin
At least the hypothalamus
