Opinion essay

Idioms and collocations make a language more poetic. There is no doubt about the truth of this statement. In my opinion, idioms and collocations also make a language more natural and more easily understood. To begin with, it seems to me that idioms and collocations make a language richer and more colorful. Not surprisingly, people use them in order to convey subtle shades of meaning or intention. For example, if someone teases you, instead of telling him directly leave me alone! you can suggest him to go fly a kite. In this way you are more diplomatic and maybe he will not mind. Secondly, by their definition, collocations and idioms just sound right. For this reason, I belief that idiomatic expressions make the language sounds better, in this way it becoming more poetic. For instance, it is easier for us to remember and use a language in chunks than as single words. Furthermore, in my opinion, the use of idioms and collocation reflects how well someone knows and masters a language. For example, in English language, there are so many idiomatic expressions and collocations that it is truly impossible to learn English without learning at least few of them. To sum up, I can honestly say that idioms and collocations can be more precise than words, often using fewer words for saying more things. Thus, they can be considered poetic methods of expressing yourself.
