A former landfill site in north Belfast could soon be used to provide

electricity to thousands of homes.

Belfast city council is working with Renewable Power Systems to

provide the facility. Underground pipes will be installed to collect the gas which will then be converted into electricity and put onto the national grid.

Geological Survey of Northern Ireland (GSNI) has

carried out research into the potential for deep geothermal energy resources in Northern Ireland. The energy source was found during the Tellus Project, which was undertaken to assess the potential of Northern Ireland's natural resources. Geothermal energy, the heat stored in rocks below the ground surface, is a low-carbon renewable source of heating or electricity. It is harnessed by extracting hot water from deep underground and distributing it through a heating network to heat users.
