1-3 Chapter 21 3/1/12

1- Mr. Paynes testimony doesnt compare at all with Ann Eggley and Patience Kershaw. Mr. Payne is a coal master that runs a mine and Ann Eggley and Patience Kershaw are to young girls that work in the mine that he runs. He says that all people especially younger people are treated with the upmost respect and not over worked. The two girls say that they are told that they work 6 or 7 hour shifts but have never had a shift less than 10 hrs. He also goes and states that the workers are not overworked and are not given tasks over their capabilities. The girls then go on to say that they are given tasks that push their bodies to their limits and sometimes are so dead when they leave they cant even change or eat when they get home because of fatigue. 2- Eggley, Kershaw and Wilson are all workers in the mines and have many stories and horrors to go with that. When we go to work today and come home from our eight hour shifts and complain how much work sucked, it looks like paradise compared to some of the daily responsibilities that were at hand. Horrors such as 12 hour shifts with one break and exerting your body to do things that its not made for is just crazy. There are 15 year old girls pulling thousand pound carts full of coal and with their shirts ripped, which takes their dignity to boot. Workmans compensation wasnt anything that existed, so if you got hurt you either worked hurt or not at all without pay which could lead to a families

financial mess. Beyond this death occurred on a regular basis within the factory mines. 3- The middle class commissioners asked many questions and got a wide variety of answers from not just the bosses that run the mines but more interestingly got 360 degree differences from the workers themselves. The commissioners to me seem to be trying to get the facts about what is actually going on in the mines. The bosses and managers give a story of normal working conditions and give the best possible help to the workers. Then when the workers are asked their opinion is short of going through hell every day. This is were I believe this is where they search is leading.
