STARLIMS

Interface:
StarLims has a browser based interface that requires internet explorer (uses ActiveX). The main
homepage has a dashboard that gives a quick snapshot of projects, processes, samples..... This
dashboard like other interface screens are customizable (fields can be added or deleted) according to
our needs. StarLims uses Crystal Reports (from Business Objects) for generating reports.

Data Migration:
StarLims provides API's and a data capture utility(DCU). The DCU can capture data from instruments,
files or other databases for which there is existing support in the StarLims data model. Also, data can
be loaded through the API's or directly via SQL.

Software extension:
Assay requests, QC and project tracking processes seem to be already present. Enterprise designer tool
provides the ability to extend and customize to our needs (incorporate the pull and sort process).
StarLims also provides the capability of capturing results and billing.

Systems:
Representative mentioned about several labs managing a million or more samples with StarLims.
However, the rep. did not mention any specific academic lab that may be using StarLims. StarLims
application server can only run on the windows platform.

Key Judgements:
StarLims seems to have built in capabilites for analytical lab and public health lab workflows as
opposed to biobanking lab workflows. However it is a workflow centric LIMS and provides a good
framework for capturing the latter. Since this is a commercial LIMS it also comes with a significant
price tag.
