James FERRIER (b. 30mar1776, chr 31mar1776, Paisley) (fam-search). James marr Isabella (b. abt 1785, d. 16jan1856, age 71). As James Ferrier had a son with middle name Pollock it is possible that this is his marriage: James Ferrier marr Isabella Pollock 13mar1815, Glasgow (fam-search). A member of the Black family married William Pollock. It is conceivable that Isabella was related to William. William Pollock was the second and only surviving son of Mr. Alexander Pollock of Whitehall- a property adjoining the street formerly called Finnieston Rd. and afterwards Stobcross Street and bounded on the east by Warwick Street. Glasgow PO Directory 1801 lists Alex. Pollock, manufacturer, Whitehall, Anderston. In 1835 James Ferrier bought the old stamp office in South William Street, and founded the wholesale silk and haberdashery firm of Ferrier and Pollock, which remained in South William Street until the late 1970s. The site is presently (2002) occupied by Powerscourt House shopping centre. James Ferrier was a director of the Bank of Ireland in alternate years 1832-44, and during 1846-51. He was also a director of the National Assurance Company and the Dublin-Kingstown railway, a committee member of the Kildare Place Society, and the Hibernian Bible Society, and a director of Mount Jerome cemetery. He was deleted from the R.D.S. membership list in 1854. The transfer to Ireland may have been later than 1771. The stamp office was bought in 1832.
