All special or visceral 1st order sensory neurons in the head (regardless of the cranial nerve) relay in the nucleus solitaries. 3. All general sensory 1st order neurons for the head (regardless of the cranial nerve) relay in either the mesensephallic (used by V only), pontine trigeminal (used by V only) or nucleus of spinal tract of V (used by V, VII, IX, X).
