Govt's revenue from direct tax collection zooms 94% in 5 years

NEW DELHI: The government's revenue from direct tax collection increased by 94 per cent to Rs 4,46,935 crore in 2010-11, as compared to Rs 2,30,181 crore in 2006-07, as per the information revealed in Parliament yesterday. In the mean time, indirect tax collection appreciated to Rs 3,45,127 crore as compared to Rs 2,41,538 crore during the same period, Minister of State for Finance SS Palanimanickam said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. The government attributed the appreciation in revenue from tax collection on account of rise in gross domestic product (GDP), changes in tax legislation and improved efficiency of tax administration. For the five year under review, the number of tax assesses dropped in 2008-09 and 2010-11 from the previous years. During these years, the number of income tax assesses were 3.19 million (2006-07), 3.37 million (2007-08), 3.27 million (2008-09), 3.41 million (2009-10) and 3.37 million (2010-11).
