NOTE

This is one of a group of four studies, each published separately, originally written for one performer who plays flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. Each of them may be played simply as written, by one performer, or by one performer with a pre-recorded tape accompaniment of the optional instruments, or by a group of performers, with one or more players for the principal and optional instruments. The second way, especially, is a valuable aid for improving intonation. The studies may be programmed individually or in combination with any or all of the other studies.

The flute may be accompanied by a piccolo and/or alto flute playing the same part (alto flute sounding a 4th lower), except where "no piccolo" or "no alto flute" is indicated. In those sections where the flute is to be accompanied the piccolo and/or alto flute may play or rest at will. The principal and optional parts may be played by more than one performer.
