While other universitites typically have a ranking list that is used to give an indication of a
student's academic standing, there is no direct equivalent here at NTNUs Faculty of
Medicine. In this Faculty course grades are pass/fail. However, students are given “points”
for each exam thus giving students an idea as to what level they stand and where they need
to work a bit harder. These points may not be used as an official criterion as the logic for a
“gradeless” system would then be lost.
We do, however, have other ways of evaluating a student which are of a more general
character, for example, has the student passed the exams and is the student motivated.
In the case of |, We have recelved his file and see that ‘«. has passed all his Lt;
exams and with “points” that indicate that he is a strong student. In additior are
impressed with higyfnotivation to study abroad at University of Louisville and-his ‘a bparent
willingness to work hard and we believe thatshe will be a fine ambassador for NTNU and an
academic asset to the University of Louisville.
On this basis, the Faculty of Medicine at NTNU recommends ‘1 as a candidate for
exchange with University of Louisville.
Sincerely yours,
a

MOTIVASJONS ESSAY
When applying to a university or for a stipend you will often be asked to write a Statement of
Purpose/Graduate Statement/Letter of Intent/Research Plan. The information below from UC —
Berkeley provides some excellent tips on what to include and what not to include, UC-Berkeley also
fhas some samples that you might want to look at,

GRADUATE SCHOOL - STATEMENT
Graduate and professional schools often require some sort of writton statement as a part of
the application. The terminology differs, but may include "statement of purpose," “personal
statement," “letter of intent," “personal narrative," etc. Some statements require rather specific
information-for example, the applicant's intended area of study within a graduate field. Others
suggest subjects which should be addressed specifically. Still others are quite unstructured,
leaving the applicant free to address a wide range of matters. Some applications call for one
statement, while others require responses to a series of six or more questions, ranging from
250 to 750 words each. The importance of the statement varies from school to school and
from field to field.
Determine your purpose in writing the statement
Determine the content of your statement
Determine your approach and style of the statoment
Words and phrases to avoid without explanation
Determine your purpose in writing the statement
Usually the purpose is to persuade the admissions committee that you are an applicant who
should be chosen. You may wish to show that you have the ability and motivation to succeed
in your field, or you may wish to show the committee that, on the basis of your experience,
you are the kind of candidate who will do well in the field. Whatever its purpose, the content
must be presented in a manner that will give coherence to the whole statement.
+ Pay attention to the purpose throughout the statement so that extraneous material is
left out.
= Pay attention to the audience (committee) throughout the statement. Remember that
your audience is made up of professionals in their field, and you are not going to tell
them how they should act or what they should be. You are the amateur.
