The Daily Monitoring Report


- On Saturday, 77 people were martyred at the hands of Al-Assad's battalions, mostly in the cities of Damascus countryside and Homs. 20 people of them were directly shot and slain in Saqba, Damascus countryside. In addition, shelling continued against Homs. Furthermore, about 1,000 families were besieged there, which led to the shortage of food and medicine. Moreover, the military aircraft bombed Daraa city.(1)(2) - Anatoly Isaykin, the general director of Ros oboron export (the biggest Russian company exporting weapons), said that his company is about to ship missile defense systems to Syria that could be used to combat any expected international intervention in the country on the part of the USA or any other country. The advanced defensive missile systems could be used to shoot down planes or sink ships, he added.(2) - At least 9 elements affiliated to Al-Assad's battalions were killed, including 5 people following clashes in Homs governorate; one person after targeting a military bus in El Mantika As-Sina'iyeh, Damascus with an explosive device; three people following clashes and assassination operations in Damascus countryside.(4)

Field Mobility
- Yesterday (Saturday), many districts in Aleppo went on strike, as Syrian activists broadcast pictures on the Syrian revolution' sites on the internet that showed that the districts of Salahuddin, al-Sukari, Al-Khalidiya, Al Jamelaiah and Bustan Al-Qaser had gone on strike in protest at killing the civilians by Al-Assad's battalions and the heavy shelling that targeted Aleppo countryside.(2)

Internal Situation

Military Situation
- The helicopters of Assad's detachments shelled Bwaida Sharqeye village in Homs countryside.(2) - Violent clashes broke out between the government army and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in many districts in the Syrian capital, Damascus.(2) - Al-Assad's battalions bombed Daraa using missiles, with the spread of tanks of the governmental forces there.(2) - Some 14 civilians were martyred in Homs governorate, 7 of them were martyred due to Assad battalions' shelling against Alfarhania village affiliated to Talbisah town, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. In addition, other 6 persons were martyred due to shelling that targeted the districts of Al-Khalidiya, Bab Tadmur, Juret AlShayah and Safsafa in Homs city, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Moreover, one person was martyred at the hands of snipers in Al-Qusayr town, Homs countryside, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.(4) - The head of the UN observer mission in Syria Maj. Gen. Robert Mood suspended its monitoring mission in Syria because of the rapidly escalating violence over the past ten days, citing "The lack of willingness by the parties to seek a peaceful transition." Mood added that the UN observers would not be withdrawn but were being locked down in Syria's most contested cities, unable to conduct patrols.(2)(3)(4) - In a sign government forces were also suffering heavy losses, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on Saturday military funerals for 24 soldiers and members of security forces.(3) - The World Bank (WB) expects the Syrian economy to shrink by 6.4% this year due to the crisis plaguing the country. The absence of foreign direct investment (FDI) and decline in tourism revenues are the reasons behind rapid retreat in foreign reserves.(2)

Political Mobility
- The Syrian National Council (SNC) warned against "a bloody massacre" in Homs, noting that the city is currently being besieged with 30,000 of "governmental soldiers and Shabiha (militia affiliated to Syrian regime)". Moreover, the SNC also called on the United Nations (UN) and the UN Security Council to intervene with a view to "protecting" that city and the other targeted regions.(1)(2)(4) - The Syrian National Council (SNC) announced that it was "surprised" that the U.N. observers had suspended their activities in Syria because of the rising violence at a time when Al-Assad's regime is escalating violence through committing more crimes against the Syrian people. The SNC also considered that that decision "would serve such a tyrannical regime and deprive the Syrian people of the sole frail cover that ensure little protection." Moreover, the SNC called on the UN Security Council to arm them under Chapter VII of the U.N. charter.

- The White House Spokesman Tommy Vietor said, "We call again on the Syrian regime to uphold its commitments under the UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's plan, including the full implementation of a ceasefire," adding, without giving further details, "At this critical juncture, we are consulting with our international partners regarding next steps toward a Syrian-led political transition as called for in Security Council resolutions."(2)

- We have to send UN peacekeepers to Syria on a mission with more people who would be able to protect themselves from the violence of the regime, said Burhan Ghalioun, ex-leader and current political bureau chief of the Syrian National Council (SNC). The suspension of the UN observer mission was, Ghalioun said, a clear condemnation by the international community and the Annan mission of the violent and aggressive policy of the Syrian regime.

- The Vatican news agency (Fides) reported an appeal by some 800 civilian Muslims and Christians trapped in the city of Homs to the UN, the Red Crescent and the Red Cross organizations for helping them flee the bloodshed.(2)(4)

- Diplomats say the head of the UN observer mission in Syria Maj. Gen. Robert Mood is expected to submit a report to the UN Security Council on Monday or Tuesday about the unrest in Syria.(2)(3)
