LESSON MATERIALS

FOCUS/RATIONALE

This task is aimed at educating students about the purpose, and process, of deconstructing media. To this point, the students have viewed a variety of different forms of media and are familiar with the particular elements used. The goal of this task is for students to critically analyze media forms by deconstructing the techniques, the intended audience, the point of view, and the purpose of the media forms (T.A.P.P. Model). Have students choose a media form identified in a specific commercial, print advertisement, web page, etc., that they have become familiar with. Have them consider the following questions: Was the media form effective? Did the media convince the viewer to do something? What was the purpose of the media form (selling a product, a service, or a form of entertainment, etc.)? What did the media form look and / or sound like? What features were noticeable?

By the very nature of their profession, journalists have an obligation to serve the truth and not offend against charity in disseminating information. They should strive to respect, with equal care, the nature of the facts and the limits of critical judgment concerning individuals. They should not stoop to defamation. ~ Cathechism of the Catholic Church, London: Burns & Oates, 1999, 2493
