Anlysis of Sven Delblanc’s much critizised novel Änkan (The Widow, 1988), accused of being an unsuccessful attempt of creating popular fiction. The analysis demonstrates, however, that Romance, Gothic and other popular literary genre conventions combine with religious traditions from the gospel of Mark and devotional literature. Thus, the popular is a way of reaching out to the common reader with a serious and complicated problematics concering the freedom of the will.
