The New Los Angeles Charter School Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)

The New Los Angeles Charter School administration & staff are initiating a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) to promote an end to harassment and bullying of any kind and support gay straight relations.

What is a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)? Why are public schools developing GSAs?
32%of students aged 12-18 experience verbal or
physical bullying;

90% of LGBT students report being verbally harassed; 50% of LGBT students physically harassed; Recent tragedies involving LGBT students and students
perceived to be LGBT;

GSAs combat bullying and harassment and promote


understanding and respect in the school community.

Why do we need a GSA at New Los Angeles? What is its purpose?


Simply put: Every school needs a GSA; Incidents of bullying and discrimination at New LA
that involve the use of homophobic slurs and namecalling; community and planning a school-wide campaign in order to build a safe school environment and increase inclusivity.

What will the GSA look like at New Los Angeles Charter School?
Planning committee will be: one administrator,
three teachers, two parents, and one student representative per grade;

Weekly meetings with at least one teacher present; All students are welcome to participate; Meetings will include campaign planning and
building a cohesive and supportive network of community members.
