ONLINE Elective
Challenges in Sustainability is made up of two fully on-line modules: a ‘core’ or theoretical module and a ‘practice’ module. The core module aims is to expose
you to varying definitions and approaches to sustainability and to consider and debate the ways in which these definitions are informed by different political
and philosophical orientations along with divergent understandings about the ‘environment’. The ‘core’ module becomes an area for conversing between these
various views.

The core module prepares you to engage with the practice of ‘sustainability’: your own practice and ‘sustainability’ approaches in professional practice. The
aim is for you to apply knowledge learnt in the Core module to examine, critique and reflect on the practice of sustainability. It is only by exploring the as-
sumptions, biases and limitations of existing approaches to practice that debates about sustainability can be moved forward to provide a foundation for a criti-
cally informed, constructive and reflexive approach to practice.

Assessment is made up of participation in on-line forums (30%) and a series of exercises that ask you to reflect on both the discussion forums and required read-
ings.

Do Cities think we spend too little time standing and staring, getting to really see and know and LIVE in our surroundings?

Does the city gather power through our use of it? Is it our dreams that transform the city?

How many years do you have to live in a city to realise it is always changing; that is always will.

Cities don’t get old as we do: so that sometimes returning to a city is surprising : It’s so new! Just think of Swanston Street near RMIT.

Melbourne’s Birranung Mar – do you remember it as a flat field of railway lines? What about Batmans’s Hill – It’s not there!

We will consider memory and forgetting in Melbourne’s past, through contemporary novels, through photographs, through walking and looking.

And through a group of Landscape Architects who have thought about change, and changed Melbourne themselves.

They will be providing the Student Body with a armature of some of the more substantial Melbourne Earth Works that havechanged our urban milieu.

And we will be offering them our support in arranging this evening lecture series.

In SUB:URBAN DIARIES you’ll apply a de-

sign method that combines ACTING and
MAPPING in order to TEST eventual long
term interventions. In small groups you
design and realize an URBAN ACTION in a
suburban open space. RECORDINGS of the
action & reactions will nourish the ma-
king of your DIARY. The approach is a way
of PLACE MAKING through QUICK & SIMPLE
means and allows you to learn from its
impact. Through reflective ANNOTATIONS
(drawings, interviews,...) you’ll mea-
sure and communicate SUCCESS and / or
FAILURE of the temporary intervention.
Outcome of the elective is a SHORT MOVIE.

TUTOR: Petra Pferdmenges is an architect running the research-based practice Alive Architecture (www.alivearchitecture.eu). The multidisciplinary platform reclaims the
public role of designers by making social challenges explicit through unsolicited projects. Since 2010 the tactical design approach is developed further through a PhD
(project research @ RMIT Melbourne & Sint-Lucas Architectuur). Petra Pferdmenges teaches design & theory at Sint-Lucas Architectuur & at the ULG in Belgium. Previously
she worked for five years in renowned architecture offices throughout Europe (Edouard Francois in Paris, Josep Llinas in Barcelona, Architecten Cie in Amsterdam and ARJM
in Brussels) after having completed the International Master in Architecture at the TU Delft, Netherlands.
