By being performed in Olympic year, this play presents the opportunity to review in hindsight, the events of the week surrounding the announcement of the Olympic bid in 2005 through a series of characters linked by this one fateful day. por-nog-ra-phy - the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction. Simon Stephens on the play: Pornography was originally written as a commission for the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. It was written in October 2005 three months after the suicide bombs were taken onto the London Transport Service. I dont think I could have written a play so directly in response to such a terrifying and recent event in my hometown if I hadnt thought that I was writing it for a theatre outside the UK. Writing for the German theatre afforded me the kind of detachment that is more often only afforded with time. This play is entirely a work of fiction. It was my intention to use that fiction in an attempt to humanize the people of my home city. In the end, for me, the plays not about terrorism, its about human beings.
