DR. SCOTT FOGLER

Dr. Scott Fogler is the Ame and Catheirne Vennema Professor of Chemical Engineering and the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and was the 2009 President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He received his B.s. from the University of Illinois and his M.S. and PhD. From the University of Colorado. Scott Fogler is the author of the textbooks, Elements of Chemical Reaction Engineering, 4th Edition, and Essentials of Chemical Reaction Engineering, which are estimated to be used by 7-80% of all chemical engineering programs in the United States and also dominant the world wide market. Over 40 PhD. Students have graduated from Scotts research group and he has published over 200 research publications. Scott Fogler has received a number of distinguished awards at college, university, and national levels. In 1995 he was recipient of the Warren K. Lewis award from the AIChE for contributions to chemical engineering education and in 1999 he received the National Catalyst Award from the Chemical Manufacturers Association. In 2009 he was elected president of AIChE and in 2010 he received the Malcolm E. Pruitt Award from the Council for Chemical Research. ABSTRACT: RESEARCH TALK

A Novel Application of Chemical Reaction Engineering to the Petroleum Industry
Acidization is the process of injecting acid mixtures down an oil well out into the reservoir to dissolve the porous media. This dissolution generates an increase in porosity and permeability thereby allowing the oil in the reservoir to flow out at a greater rate. Unfortunately, there have been cases in the Gulf of Mexico where significant decreases in permeability have been observed. The unique feature about the Gulf of Mexico is that many reservoirs contain the zeolite analcime, which dissolves in hydrochloric acid to form monosilicic acid and oligomers. These oligomers polymerize and coalesce to form spherical silica particles, which subsequently block the pores and damage the reservoir formation. Fundamental studies were undertaken on kinetics of silica particle formation and growth. Particle sizes measured as a function of time by dynamic light scattering revealed that the particles grow exponentially and that higher HCl concentrations result in a much faster rate of monosilicic acid disappearance as well as faster particle growth rates.

ZANDMER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES

The Zandmer Distinguished Lecture Series in Chemical & Petroleum Engineering is designed to attract internationally renowned, distinguished researchers to give two lectures at the University of Calgary. The first is a research presentation in their area of expertise. The second presentation is a general presentation about Science, Engineering, Public Policy, or Education.

HERBERT & URSULA ZANDMER

Herbert & Ursula Zandmer gave a significant endowment to support applied energy and science based research and teaching programs within the Department of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary. Mr. Herbert Zandmer was a pioneer in the Oil & Gas industry in Western Canada. Mrs. Ursula Zandmer was an artist and poet. Her pursuit of artistic expression and form led her through many artistic phases. She produced over 350 pieces of artwork, mostly paintings, and wrote several books.

ABSTRACT: GENERAL TALK

Globalization and Cooperation: Chemical Engineers Working to Solve Problems in the Next Decade
The next decade will be filled with challenges for chemical engineers ranging from access to clean water to meeting the worlds energy needs. As we consider the path ahead, we need to inventory the skills of our current graduates to see how they relate to upcoming technological and societal challenges. Current graduates are well trained in the fundamentals of chemical engineering and they are as bright as any who have come before them. However, as part of the millennium generation, they have their own characteristics and ideas significantly different from the previous X generation. Consequently, we will see changes not only in the demand for technology and societal needs, but also in the way recent graduates perform/interact in the workplace and the way they prioritize problems. We need to think how we will train chemical engineers with technical updates as well as developing soft skills in the work place.
