The canistel (Pouteria campechiana) is an evergreentree native to southern Mexico and Central [1] America.

It is cultivated in other countries, such as Brazil,Taiwan, and Vietnam for its fruit. The canistel grows up to 10 meters (33 ft) high, and produces orange-yellow fruit, also called yellow sapote, up to 7 centimeters (2.8 in) long, which are edible raw. Canistel flesh is sweet, with a texture often compared to that of a cooked egg yolk, hence its colloquial name of "eggfruit." It is closely related to the Mamey sapote and abiu. [edit]Etymology Its binomial name is derived from the Mexican town of Campeche, where it is native. It is sometimes (wrongly) referred to as Lucuma campechiana. In the Philippines it is called chesa. In Sri Lanka this fruit [2] is known as Laulu, Lavulu or Lawalu. In Thailand it is known asLamut Khamen, meaning "Khmer Sapodilla". The plant's name in the Vietnamese language is cy trng g (chicken egg plant) because of the fruit's appearance. It also has the Vietnamese name lekima. This is very unusual because Vietnamese is a tonal, isolating language whose morphemes all consist of a single syllable. It appears that this name derives from the word lucuma. The unusual name "Lekima" has been included in the list of typhoon names, and was applied to a storm that devastated north-central Vietnam and killed from 42 to 55 people in Vietnam on 10 March 2007

I've come across yet another tasty and not-so-well-known fruit. It looks a bit like an egg when peeled if you liken the flesh to the egg white and the large hard seed in the middle to the egg yolk. The flesh is firm, creamy, and sweet, kind of like a firmer and richer version of sweet potato. But really, it has a taste and texture of its own. I like it best when just ripened, as it tends to get too mushy when over-ripe. Based on its color, I'm sure this fruit is packed with provitamin A carotenoids. Other names for this fruit include Canistel, Egg Fruit, Chesa, Tiessa, Tisa, Zapote, or Sapote (varieties include Sapodilla, Yellow Sapote, Mamey Sapote, Green Sapote, Black Sapote, Chapote, South American Sapote, and even White Sapote). More information: "The Canistel or Egg Fruit is quite a common fruit in the Philippines where many other fruits of South American origin can also be found, no doubt introduced by the Spanish in the old days. In other Asian countries it is a rather rare curiosity. In the Philippines it's called Tiessa or Tisa or Chesa. Other English names is Yellow Sapote as it belongs to the Sapote family or Sapotaceae. The species name is Pouteria camphechiana. In Malaysia where it seems to be a rather new introduction it's variously called Buah Mentega or Buah Lemak (meaning "Butter Fruit" or "Creamy Fruit" respectively). The ripe fruits are yellow and waxy skinned with a pulp that has the consistency of a hard-boiled egg yolk, hence its other name. The green fruit contain a sticky latex which disappear or at least lessen when the fruit is

soft and fully ripe . Fruits can be highly variable in size and shape--ranging from round to pointed and ovaloid. They are usually eaten fresh out of hand but can also be used in custards, pies, milkshakes and other desserts."
