Why Promote Water Efficiency?


71% earth surface ocean <1% is fresh water for consumption U.S. population doubled 1950 to 2000, demand on public supply systems more than tripled 36 states are anticipating water shortages by 2013 Need to invest $492-$820 billion by 2028 in infrastructure to keep up with demand

260 million gallons/day by watering lawns/gardens more efficiently (garden hose running 80 years) 115 billion gallons/yr if 50% of households replace pre-1994 toilets (6 months supply for KY) 160 billion gallons/yr if 25% of households retrofit with water efficient fixtures (NC, SC, GA and AL can shower daily for one year) 35 million gallons/day if every household installed WaterSense labeled bathroom faucets (fill every tank at GA aquarium four times every day)
