Section B 1. The structure consisting of two bars. An Axial load P = 200 kN is applied is shown in the figure. Determine the following using elimination approach (i) Element Stiffness Matrices (ii) Global Stiffness Matrix (iii) Global Load Vector (iv) Nodal Displacements (v) Stress in each bar (vi) Reaction forces at the supports

2. Use Rayleighs method to find the displacement field u(x) of the rod as shown in figure . element 1 is made up of Aluminium and Element 2 is made up of steel . Load P= 10 kN . Assume a piecewise linear displacement field u = a1 + a2x for the element 1 and u = a3 + a4 x for the element 2 . Compare the result with that of analytical strength of material solution.

3. A thin plate has uniform thickness t = 1 inch , E = 30 x 106 Psi and weight density w = 0.2836 pounds/ inch3 . an external load P = 100 Pounds is applied at its mid point . Modal the plate and solve for global displacement vector Q using elimination approach . Also evaluate the stress in each element and the reaction force .

4. A four bar truss as shown in figure is subjected to the loading conditions . Given E = 2okN/mm 2 . The area of bar used for the truss is 60 mm2 for all elements .the length l1 = 75 cm , l2 = 100 cm , P1 = 20 kN , P2 = 25 kN. Determine (i) the element stiffness matrix for each element.
