FOC CALENDAR

November 1996

Friends, Just space to draw your attention to the revised deadline dates in the FOC Calendar for the December News Sheet and FOCUS 29. These are due to June and me booking flights to Florida on 28 November and the need to complete both publications before we leave, as we will not return to the UK until 20 December. We are looking forward to meeting many of you at the Florida Dinner and please keep an ear open for W4/G4BUE before and afterwards. Before the dinner we shall be staying with Vic, N4TO, and I am looking forward to trying out his new antennas planned to be put up in November. After the dinner we shall be staying with Shirley and Ink, N4OO, in Sopchoppy where some fishing is also planned!

THE 1996 WINDLE TROPHY by G3LIK

Will all members please make sure they submit their final Windle logs for 1996 to me as soon as possible after 31 December. Please do not send them to other Committee members or via e-mail. Please submit an entry no matter what your score is. It is the entering of the competition that counts and is a lasting memory of the OM himself. Finally, the annual Windle Trophy is one of the best ways of judging on-air activity within the club, and the more logs we receive the easier it is for the Committee to decide who should be a recipient of a letter under Rule 8.

3. W4FOA: AA5DX, G4PKT, K8MFO, W4YE, ZP6CW (+W1HMD). 2. G3IZD: G3JFF, G3LIK, G3XNG, W2BA, W4QM (+G3RFE, G3VCN). 1. W4PBC: G3UOF, W4MJ, W4QM, W9GW, ZL1MH (+W2AMS) 1. An invitation has been sent to N4YGP.

A71CW: Chris, who has been off the air for the last few months (no licence) is QRV again. AA6KX: New member Bruce has been very QRV as ZF8BS during October. GAYN: Congratulations to Yvonne and Ian on the birth of their daughter Bethany Laura. GCMM: John made over 1000 QSOs as GB2ROA and thanks members who called him. G3LIK: Mick will be QRV as GB4RN between 15 November and 12 December. G3SWH: Phil is the new QSL manager for Tims, G3VXE, operations as follows: G4VXE/ TF (August 1993), GJ4VXE/P (June 1994), G4VXE/C6A (December 1994/95 - also December 1996), G4VXE/VE3 (ongoing), GW4VXE/ P (FOC Marathons mainly) and G4VXE! G3UEN: Rexs activity has been curtailed lately due to his wife being in hospital four times recently. She is now home and improving. G3XSN: Referring to page 24 of FOCUS 28, Bert went to see Maurice, VS5MC, in Ashley Manor Nursing Home, 17-19 Cambridge Rd, Waterloo, Crosby, Liverpool L22 1AQ (tel: 0151 928 2249). Bert says, Despite knowing Maurice very well, he does not recognise anyone and if anyone is thinking of going to see him, they should be prepared for his mental state. He is suffering from dementia/altzheimer`s disease and is quite confused. I took in lots of photographs and chatted to him but it was of no use. G3ZBA: Members will be saddened to hear that ex-member Jim became a Silent Key in September. He resigned after his frist stroke. G4BLX: Derek and Val start a new life on 1 November when they move to the Dodogne Valley in France to take over a 60 acre vineyard. In between pruning the vines, crushing grapes, hammering corks into bottles and planning out the new antenna farm, Derek should be QRV as F/ G4BLX/P until he has a residence qualification that will enable him to get a new callsign. G4ZDB: Robbie and Jane will be in the USA for several months next spring and are planning to attend the Washington Dinner.

MEMBERS NEWS by G4BUE

G4ZVJ: Andy is currently QRV as DU3/AH8F until 6 November. With Ken, G4RWD, Andy will be QRV 15/25 November as V47VJ (Ken as V47WD), on 1827, 3503, 7003, 10107, 14027, 18077, 21027, 24897 and 28027kHz QRM, QSX up, plus a low-key operation as V47VJ in the CQ CW Contest. G5BZ: Condolences to George who lost his wife, Eileen, in September after 57 years of marriage. GW3HCL: Chas, GW3SB, recently toured the Scottish Highlands in his camper-van and kept a daily sked on 80 metres with Dan, his nearest FOC neighbour. Dan says a couple of years ago he needed five for his Augie and now he needs ten! He has heard nine of them this year but has failed to make a QSO, usually losing out to stronger competition. K1JD: John has a new QTH on Rhode Island. He has put up a 80 metre zepp until he is able to get better antennas up in the spring. K4KQ: Thelma was in hospital for four days with phneumonia recently but is now home and recovering with Chuck acting as cook, nurse, etc! K4XU: Dick will be an operator at KRF, multiop Colorado station, in the CQ CW Contest. K5DQ: Peggy and Don are going on a cruise in the western Caribbean soon. K5VT: Congratuilations to Vince on his recent election to the ARRLs DX Advisory Committee (DXAC). K6NA: Glen was 9Y4H in the CQ SSB Contest. K7UOT: Congratulations to Karen on obtaining her Technician licence KC7SQM. She is now studying for her General licence and has been on 40 metres, CW of course! Tom is using the MFJ1798 ten band vertical mounted on a mast about six feet above ground, and although it is a rather strange looking antenna it works sufficiently well for Tom to plan raising it to 22 feet above ground. During 100 days of being QRV as K7U, Tom worked only a few European FOC members, conditions being generally terrible. N4TO: Vic is enlisting the help of some locals to have a tower/antenna party to put up some new hardware in time for the CQ CW Contest.

PALOU: Lou was in China in August, where he was QRV from BY1PK, and in Israel for 12 days at the end of September for an IARU meeting where he enjoyed meeting some of the gang at 4X4NJs QTH. On activity Lou says, in my almost 40 year membership of FOC I cannot remember that activity was ever as low as it is now! I made approximately 150 QSOs from BY1PK, mostly with Europe, which included only three FOC members. VK2BJ: Barry says, here conditions on HF have been diabolical for as long as I can remember and I now have a major problem with reverse TVI, S8 wide band noise on 80 and 40 metres, from a new neighbours TV. At least the neighbour is friendly and will work with me to resolve the problem. I have told him the TV has to be off for BERU! VK6AJ: Jeff has decided to drop out of the club due to his changing interests that now concentrate on packet radio and SSB. Thanks for your past support for the club and good luck in the future. W1FJ: Al had four inches of water in his basement caused by the recent 12 inches in 24 hours rain. He will be one of the operators of a multimulti CQ CW Contest entry as J38AA and will also be QRV 16/26 November as J38AC. W1HX: Happy birthday to Norm on the 2 December when he will be 90 years old, and also (belatedely) to Tisha for the 8 October when she will be *? years old! W2JB: John, W2JB; Howie, W2AGW; and Dave, W2QM, together with five others, will be QRV 4/11 December as FS/W2AGW, FS/W2JB and FS/W2QM. W3ML: George has decided to resign from Associate membership and thanks his many friends made during his many years in FOC. W4QM: Dale will be QRV again from the beginning of December as VQ9QM, CW all bands including 160 metres. ZL2AGY: Tony will be one of the operators at the Kiwi Contest Groups multi-multi station ZM2K in the CQ CW Contest.
