ROBINSON CRUSOE

Chapter -1 My first sea travel My father had come to England from Germany and had become a merchant. His name was Kreutznaer, but it -f was changed in English to Crusoe. I was born in 1632 and my parents named me Robinson Crusoe. My love for the sea began at a very early age. I was watching the sea everyday as my friends played. I was dreaming of sailing on a ship. Mv father was a "V' " :TfT and' I -rich man. We never had wise t 'I J < * l money problems. One day he sked me why I wished to r~ r : go to the sea, intead of doing a profitable job. "Life is very dangerous in the sea. You have al the money that I have. You don't have to work at sea." he said. He was right. I did what he had said and I tried to forget the sea for a time. But my head was always filled with the thought of the sea. dL5u( 'ce' One day I met a friend who was going to sea on his father's ship in Hull. He invited me to go with him.The next day I went on board the ship, without my father's permission. We sailed to London.

Chapter -2 Terrible Storm It was exactly eight years after I had left.my home. On September 1,1669, we set out. At first everything was good. But after we had passed the Equator/a very strong storm arose. We were dragged for days wherever the storm took us. We didn't know where we were. We almost lost hope of our lives. Finally we saw land. We had a small boat on board and let the boat down into the water and got into the boat because we knew that very soon the ship would be broken into pieces. We rowed towards land and made some way in the boat. Suddenly a huge wave came from behind. We were ali thrown into the water in a moment. Although I was a good swimmer, I had to try hard to keep from drowning. A great wave carried me to the shore. I put my feet down in the water. I tried to walk to land but the waves pulled me back towards the sea several times. Then a strong wave threw me to the rocks on the shore.

I hold onto the rocks very tightly and tried hard to reach the land. I was lying on land as if half dead with the water which I had taken in. I stood up slowly and looked around. The ship was wrecked ,lying far out in the sea. I saw nobody either on land or in the sea. AH the other salors were drowned. I was lucky to be alive but I had no food, water or gun on this odd land. In the evening, I was afraid of being eaten by a wild animal in the dark. I couldn't sleep until the night. I thought I could be safe on a tree. Then, I found a big tree, climbed up and placed myself carefully among the branches. I slept there till the morning. In the morning the weather was good. The storm was ver and the sea was quiet. I was surprised to see that the ship was less than a mile away from the shore. I was hungry and I might h^ve got some food from the ship. I swam to reach the ship. The ship was ali in pieces. I climbed through a hole on the side. Then I found large pieces of board and tied them together to make a raft. I found the carpenter's tool for cutting and shaping wood

and took them on shore. Then I built a raft in a day to carry the food from the ship. I began to fiil my raft with bread, rice and cheese. I also took the guns and plenty of gun powder, matches, needles, books and clothes that I could find. I got ali the supplies safely on shore. I was happy to get everything I needed. I dried them under the sun. Most of them dried well and I could use them. But I thought of what I would do when the food finished.

Chapter -3 A new life on the Island I kept my hope for a few days to find a house or people. I went round the shore. I couldn't dare to go away from the ship. There was a hill nearby, which was higher than the other hills on the north of it. I quickly went to the top of the hill. There I saw that I was on an island. Every side of the land was surrounded by the sea. There were plenty of birds at the top of the hill. My gun was with me and I shot at a big bird. Because of the sound of the gun hundreds of birds flew up, making loud cries. Then I lit a fire and cooked the bird. That was a good dinner. I was looking forva good place to shelter where I could spend the night safely. I found a little hole on the side of the hill into the rock. I brought the boards that I had saved from the ship. Then I had a shelter made of boards in front of the rock hole. Then I began to cut away the rock with my axe. By this way, I could make the hole bigger. So I had a cave in

the rock behind my tent. I could sleep without any fear that night. It is important to have a shelter where you can live in safety. The days were passing quickly. After about a few days, I was afraid of losing time and days, so I set up a tali piece of wood and cut on it in big letters: 7 came on shore here on 30th ofSeptember, 1659/ Each day I cut a small mark on the side of this stick with my knife. So I had a calendar and I could follovv the days, weeks and months in this way. I also took notes on paper everyday. I had cut down a tree and cut away the round part of the tree on either side with my axe. I had never used a tool in my life until I came to the island. I found that I could make anything I wanted with an axe and a knife. Then I made a table and a chair. The cave became my kitchen and store-room. Thus I had everything ready for my home. It was autumn and it rained a lot. Sometimes I went out to hunt when it stopped raining. After a month I was greatly surprised to find barley and rice growing in of my house. jj

I had eaten ali the barley and rice. I went ver the eritire island but didn't see wheat anywhere else. Then I remembered that when cleaning the bag I had dropped the seeds. I was very lucky that I had thrown the grain in the right place. I thought one day I could make bread. At the end of June, I harvested the grain carefully. Then I planted again. I also planted rice. I was stili going out every day to discover the island. One day I found wonderful melons and grapes among the trees. They vvere very juicy and delicious. I thought I could dry the grapes under the sun to eat after the fresh grapes finished. I stayed there at night. The next day I found spring vvater. On both sides of the water there were a lot of trees. Among the trees I found lemon and orange trees. I brought a lot of fruit to my house. In August my grapes were dry and quite delicious. I carried them to my cave for winter. From the end of August it began to rain and continued till October. I couldn't go out of my cave for days. On September 30, I had been on the i'xactly a year.

Living on the island for years

I learned the rainy and the dry seasons. When the rain stopped, I went to the fence that I had made. It was amazing that my fence was growing.I thought that soon there would be a cool, shady place. Three years later they became trees. I also cut branches and made a fence around my first home. I had wished to dscover the other parts of the island. Before I began my journey, I took my gun, axe, dog and food with me. I crossed the valley and came near the shore. The weather was clear and bright. I saw a piece of land that looked like an island far off in the distance. That might have been a part of America or maybe land where cannibals live. As I was walking, I thought I was lucky. This part of the island was mor e beautiful. Flowers, grass and many parrots were ali around. I tried har d to catch a parrot and I did.

I liked the journey very much. When I went down the seashore ,1 saw many turtles and also many different kinds of birds were ali around. I came back to my home with the little goat that my dog found. I had missed my home and I was very happy to be back. I stayed at my home for about a week. I made a cage for my parrot. I called him Toll'. Then I taught my parrot my name. I fed the little goat, Soon it got used to me. On September 3 0 ,1 remembered my second year on the island. I had no hope of being saved. I gave a prayer and my thanks to God along. I was happier now. Now I was a different and happier man. Farming and harvesting filled my frst year. I had more and more grain, corn, rice and barley than I could use. I made pots in which I baked bread.

fight with twenty or more people. But if I explored the other island, I might have found a way to escape. This made me think of making a boat for myself. I had been trying to make a boat when I didn't go hunting. I began to cut a very big tree. For a long time I tried to hollow the inside of the tree. At last, I finished the boat but it was so big that I couldn't move it. Then I decided to make a smaller boat. Finally I made a small one. I sailed around the island with my boat. On November 6, it was my sixth year on the island.

I had planted grains and harvested them every year J also dried the grapes and hunted animals. I always thought about how I could escape from the island. I had been thinking of the island which I had seen on the other side. If cartnibals caught me, they would eat me. Even if they were not cannibals, I couldn't

Chapter-5 A footprint One afternoon, I was walking along the seashore towards my boat.I was greatly surprised to see a clear footprint on the sand. I looked around me, but there was no voice or people. I went up and down the shore but I couldn't see anything. How did it come there? I couldn't know. I came back to my tent in fear, looking behind me carefully. I couldn't sleep that night. I had to do something to protect myself. I made the wall of my home stronger by adding a second wall. Then I made seven holes in the wall so that I could put out my guns. But I never felt safe. I also planted trees.
4-

On day ,when I was trying to find another ne w place, I thought I saw a boat on the sea far away. But it was so far that I was not sure whether it was a boat or not. When I had come down to the south west of the island, I found a scary thing; the shore covered the head, hands, feet and other bones of a man's body. I also oticed a place where a fire had been lt and a circle had been cut in the earth. It looked like the place where cannibals have feasts. It was disgusting to think these cannibals sat down to feed upon the bodies of the men. I came back home as fast as I could. I was grateful because I had lived there eighteen years till that day and no one could find me. So I could live there by hiding myself. I didn't have any fears any more, but I wanted to kili some of the cannibals when they were having a feast. I found a good place on the side of the hill where I might wait safely till someone come. Every morning for many days I went to this place. I spent two or three months vvatching, but I couldn't see a dead body either on land or in the sea. At last I became tired of waiting. The best way to protect myself was to hide.

In two years a small forest had grown in front of my house. I had hid my home so perfectly that no one could think there was a tent among the trees. I was entering my home by climbing a ladder, then taking it inside.

One morning I saw a fire on the shore where I saw scary things. I got frightened and I came back home to ^('t my gun. Then, I went 'quickly up the hill. VVhen I looked with my binoculars, I saw eight or nine men round the fire. I thought they would cook some men. Then I saw they got into their boats and began to go nway. As I was watching them, I also saw three boats ali at sea together. After I went down the shore, I saw the blood and bones of the men eaten by these wild people. I was so angry that I thought I would kili ali of them at the next party. I saw cannibals in my dreams several times. I was in great fear for days and killed cannibals in my dreams at night.

Chapter- 6 Crusoe saved a man from death After about a year and a half, I was tired of waiting and watching the cannibals. I saw no more of them, but I never stopped.I believed that one day I would catch one of them. One morning I was surprised at seeing five boats coming towards the island. I went to the top of the hill with my guns, ready to attack. There were thirty men at least and they had made a fire. When their food was being ready, they were dancing round the fire. Then they went back to the boat and pulled a man from the boat. I saw a man strike on the poor man's head with an axe. Then the three men began to hit him together. Suddenly the other poor man began to run away along the beach as fast as he could. Three men were following him. I thought I could save the poor man's life. I came quickly down the hill. I was between the man escaping and the men following him.

I hit one of the cannibals on the head with my gun. Then I shouted at one of the other cannibals. When the poor man saw the others killed, he stood stili there because he was afraid of the fire and the noise of my gun. Soon the native seemed grateful. He came to me and then he fell upon his knees and kissed the ground. Then he buried the two bodies so that there was no sign left of them. I thought he was afraid of their friends coming and seeing the dead bodies. I took him to my cave and gave hm bread, grape and water. Then I showed him a place where he could stay. He was so tired of running that he immediately slept. He was a handsome young man at the age of nearly twenty-six, with black hair. After he woke up, I began to speak to the native. I told him his name should be 'Friday'. I gave this name for that was the day on which I saved his life. He was smiling. Then I taught him to say 'yes', 'no' and their meaning. I taught him to cali me 'Master'. I gave him some clothes to wear.

28

Next day, I made him a tent between the two walls of my house. Then I made a wooden door to my storeroom. At night I slept in the store-room with my guns. There was no need to have taken al this care because Friday was showing by his gestures that he would serve me for the rest of his life. I could say that he was ready to give his life to save my life. He was a kind and hard-working servant. This was the best year of ali on this island. Friday began to speak better and understood everything that I said. I was not alone and I liked to talk to him and understand each other.

Chapter -7 Strangers One morning ,1 called Friday and told him to go to the sea-shore to get a turtle. Friday had not been gone long when he came back running. "Master! Master!" he shouted. "one, two, three boats!" he said. He was very afraid. I tried to calm him. I told him that I was in danger too; they would eat me as well as him. I told him we had to fight them with our guns. Then I made my guns ready and gave Friday two of them. I also gave him powder for the guns. I told him to keep close behind me and not do anything until I gave orders. We walked among the trees to hide ourselves and find a good place to see the men. The cannibals were sitting round a fire and eating one of the prisoners. The other prisoner was lying on the sand. His hands and feet were tied.

I ordered Friday and we shot our guns at the same time. He shot so much better than me. He killed two men and hurt three of them. I killed one man and hurt two of them. Ali the cannibals who were not hurt jumped up upon their feet. They were running away, shouting and crying with a great noise. But they didn't know where to run or which way to look, They didn't understand what had happened to the others. They ran towards their boat and got into one of the three boats. Friday ran after them and shot them. He had killed one and hurt one of them. As Friday fired at them, I cut the ropes of the poor prisoner, and set his hands and feet free. He was lying half dead. He couldn't speak or move, but only cried as if he had been set free to be killed. But when Friday came and saw the man's face, he hugged the man, kissed him, and cried, and laughed, danced, sang; then he cried again. He gave the man water, grapes and bread. Later, Friday told me that he was his father. After a few days Friday took his father to his home in the boat. He said he would come back. Chapter- 8 A Ship I had waited eight days for Friday to return. I began to lose hope of Friday coming back. Meamvhile a strange thing happened. One morning, when I was sleeping, Friday came and shouted: "Master! They have come! They have come!" I jumped up, put my clothes on and went out quickly. There was a sailing boat far away in the sea, coming into the shore. I took my binoculars and went up the hill. As soon as I came up the hill, I saw a ship eight miles away on the southwest of the island. When I looked at the ship with my binoculars, I was surprised and pleased at the same time. It seemed to be an English ship, filled with my citizens, and the boat vvas the ship's boat. I was excited. But I thought I should have been careful. I wondered why an English ship was here. There was no irade route near.

When they came on shore, I understood that many of them were English. There were eieven men in total. The hands of the three of them were tied with ropes. Four men jumped out on the shore and they took the three tied prisoners out of the boat. One of the prisoners seemed to be begging and crying, the others seemed very sad too. "English man eats prisoners like cannibals!'' Friday said. "No, they may kili, but they never eat them," I said. The men were walking around. The prisoners were sitting and thinking in trouble. These men had the chance to come on the island when the water was high on the shore. But when they were walking around; the sea began to go down and left their boat on the shore. They had left two men asleep on the boat. One of them woke up and saw what had happened. He told the others to move the boat towards the water, but they couldn't. Then they began to walk around to wait for the water to rise again.

As they were waiting, I went back home to get ready for a battle. We came back to the same place after taking our guns and powder. I decided to show myself to the prisoners and learn something about their condition. We came near them, without being seen by the other men; then I called out to them. "Who are you?" The men turned their heads to our side and jumped up in surprise. They were getting ready to run away. They ddn't answer. "You may have a friend who helps you when you don't expect." I said. A man can not help us now. So you are an angel! Are you an angel?" "I'm not an angel," I said. 'T m a human; I can help you with my servant. We have guns and powder. Teli me what happened?" "I was the captain of the ship." one of the man aid. "The crew of my ship fought against me to take ver the ship. Then they brought me with the second captain and a traveller here as prisoner.

"Where have they gne?" I asked. "They are lying under the trees. If they saw, they vvould kili us." he said. I learned they had left two guns in the boat. "Only two of the men are very dangerous. Please save us, Fil take you and your servant to England f you save the ship." the captain said. While we were speaking, we heard some of the man were awake and soon two of the men stood up. We immediately cut the ropes of the prisoners and gave them our guns. They fired the guns. One of the dangerous men was killed; the other was hurt and cried out for help. The captain hit him on the head with the heavy part of his gun. And he died soon. The other three men were only crying out and begging the captain not to kili them. The captain told them that he vvould not kili them if they promised to help him get the ship back. They promised and the captain for gave them. But we didn't trust them and tied their hands and feet.

I sent Friday to the boat with the second captain.Hearing the sounds of guns, the three men who had been away came back. When they saw what happened, they also promised to serve the captain. We tied them too. Soon I told the captain my story. He listened to me in surprise. He thought I had been kept safe on the island so that I might save his life. He couldn't say anything else and cried in tears. Then I took him to my home, and gave him food and drinks. I showed him my home and the things which I had made during the long years.

At last they lowered another boat to the sea. There were at least ten men with their guns in the boat. Chapter -9 Another boat We began to think about how we could get the ship. "There are twenty-six men on the ship." the captain said. "We have to find a way to get the ship without fighting twenty-six men." I said. "Yes, we must make a perfect plan. This is a matter of life and death." "Captain, the men on the ship would wonder what happened to the others who had come to the shore, I m sure they will come on shore with another boat to find the others." We made a plan with the captain. That was cutting a hole in the boat which was on the shore, so that the might not take it away. Just as we cut a hole under the boat, we heard shotgun from the ship; then we saw a flag go up, as signal for others coming back to the ship. When they go no answer they fired another gun. "I know every one. Three of the men are my honest erew but the other seven are very dangerous." said the captain when the boat came near. They ran to the other boat, it was surprising to see the great hole in the boat. They called out to their friends shouting. The prisoners couldn't give any answer. Friday was waiting next to them with his gun. When they had no answer, they fired their guns, but again they had no answer. Then the three men stayed with the boat and the others on land. When they came near the hill, they shouted again and sat under the trees. After a few minutes they walked towards the shore. I ordered Friday and the second captain to go to the west shore, and shout until they heard. When the pirates heard the voices of Friday and the second captain, they began to walk towards the voices. When the pirates were following Friday and the second captain, we went to the boat and caught the three men in the boat. But they were three good friends of the captain. They seemed very happy.

Chapter 10 Freedom Friday and the second captain came back. The other men had been confused, because of the voices of Friday and the second captain. So when they returned to the shore, they ali looked quite tired. They were surprised on seeing the boat and their friends gone. We were ready to fight them. When they came near, the captain and Friday shot at them. The leader of the men was killed, then the other man died, and the third man ran away. I walked with my army which was eight men. I ordered one of the men we caught to speak to them if they wished agreement. "TomSmith!" "Who are you? Is it you?" he knew the voice. "Yes, Tom! Throw your guns or you will die!" "Who are they?" said Tom. "Here is the captain and fifty men. They have been following you for two hours. Lostromo has died. Will Hyre is hurt and I'm a prisoner."

"Smith!" said the captain. "You know my voice. If you put down your guns, you will save your lives." And they put their guns on the ground; we took them prisoner and tied their hands. Then we made our plan to get the ship. I stayed with Friday and the seven men on the island. The captain and the twelve men came near the ship. Two men on the deck saw them in the approaching boat. The captain ordered a man to shout to the men on the ship, and say they had brought the men and the boat from the island. When they were talking to the second captain, five sailors climbed up the ship secretly, and took the two men prisoner. Then they shut the door of the storehouse, so they locked ali the prisoners at the lower part of the ship. Then they fought with the others on the deck, and the second captain killed the leader. At last, the ship was taken ver. I heard seven guns were fired from the ship. It was the signal of the captain to let me know that they got the ship. As soon as I heard the signal, I fell asleep, knowing the ship was safe.

In the morning I was woken up by the sound of the gun, then cheerful shouts of the captain. "My dear friend, it's your ship!" said the captain. I looked at the ship. It was about eight hundred meters away. I was so excited that I couldn't stand up. So I sat down. The captain gave me a drink. When I drank it, I could speak. That was a miracle of God. I hugged the captain. Then he showed many things that he had brought from the ship. He gave me new clothes, shoes and a hat. These presents were so valuable for me. I left the island in December, 1686. Exactly, tvventy eight years, two months and nineteen days later... At last I arrived in England. When I went to Yorkshire, my mother and father had died. There was no one waiting for me. I got married and I had two sons and a daughter. But I didn't for get my island. Then I went and stayed there for twenty days. I also made sea travels and I will again.
