SIS and police have raided several Auckland properties in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate Fiji's leader Voreqe Bainimarama. A former Fiji cabinet minister, Rajesh Singh, said the officials, armed with a search warrant, seized his daughter's laptop computer and his cell phone. Several other Fiji nationals have told Fairfax they were also visited. A spokesman for Prime Minister John Key refused any comment. "This is an operational matter. We have no comment on security and intelligence matters." Singh said the security officials told him that they had "credible evidence" that the assassination was planned in Auckland a fortnight ago during a visit by Fiji Army Colonel Tevita Uluilakeba Mara. Colonel Mara, who is wanted on charges that he was plotting to overthrow Bainimarama, fled Fiji in May last year and has refuge with the Tongan royal family, to whom he is related, in Nuku'alofa. Mara was in Auckland two weeks ago. Singh said a woman who he named said she was from the SIS and that she had a warrant to search his place. He asked for a copy of the warrant but was told it was classified and he could not have it. She was accompanied by three plain clothed police. They took away the computer and cell phone and gave him a blank receipt

They told him they had "credible evidence" that Mara and another New Zealander were planning to assassinate Bainimarama and his attorney general Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum. "I said that was news to me... I said it never happened, we never talked about those things." Singh and others visited were members of a small Auckland based group, Coalition for Democracy in Fiji which is called for the restoration of democracy. Singh said they took his cellphone. He said he regularly texts Bainimarama who replies to him now and again. LAPTOP, CELLPHONE SEIZED: Former Fijian cabinet minister Rajesh Singh denies knowing anything about an alleged plot to assassinate Fiji's leader, Voreqe Bainimarama They returned the computer and cellphone later in the day and thanked him for his cooperation. "They said don't talk to the media, don't talk to anybody because the Fiji regime doesn't know anything," Singh said.
"I said if you think Mara is involved you should talk to him, not me." Mara is in Tonga and could not be immediately contacted. Bainimarama seized power in a military coup in 2006. There has been one known attempt to kill him when his own soldiers mutinied in 2000. Eight soldiers died in the attack which saw Bainimarama run away for safety. In 2007 a Fiji Indian of New Zealand citizenship, Ballu Khan, was arrested in a plot to kill Bainimarama. Khan was severely beaten but managed to get out of Fiji and now is believed to live in Auckland. Eight other people, including paramount chief Ratu Inoke Takiveikata and former Fiji spy service chief Metuisela Mua were convicted of the plot and jailed for life.

September 2012 will see the introduction of three new vaccines into the Fiji immunization schedule by the Ministry of Health. The new vaccines will target some of the biggest causes of death and disease in Fijis women and children including pneumonia, meningitis, gastroenteritis and cervical cancer. The Minister for Health, Dr Neil Sharma said the introduction of these new vaccines is in line with World Health Organization recommendations that effective vaccines be introduced into national immunization programmes to guarantee maximum benefit. This new vaccine introduction is made possible through a four-year cost sharing agreement between the Ministry of Health (MoH) and AusAID. Babies born from September 17 will be immunized at Maternal Child Health clinics throughout the country with Rotavirus vaccine to target gastroenteritis and diarrhea and Pneumococcal vaccine targeting meningitis and pneumonia, Dr Sharma said. Around 22,000 new babies will be

immunized each year. The Minister said in term one of the 2013 school year, the Ministry will begin immunization of girls in the last year of primary school in order to combat the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which causes cervical cancer. The Ministrys deputy permanent secretary Public Health, Dr Jo Koroivueta said that under the fouryear cost sharing agreement, these highly complex and sophisticated immunizations would reach those in Fiji who are most vulnerable, through the expanded program on immunization. It is the children who will receive the full benefits of new and under-utilized immunizations by reducing inpatient and outpatient presentations for the most common childhood complaints of pneumonia, diarrhea and sepsis, Dr Koroivueta said. The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, Dr Koroivueta said would improve the lives of many children by preventing the most common causes of child mortality and morbidity in Fiji from pneumonia, septicemia and meningitis.

Ambassador Vocea Signs Mou On Set Up Of Regional Training Centre For Customs In Fiji
The Secretary General of the World Customs Organisation (WCO), Mr Kunio Mikuriya and Fijis Representative to the European Union Ambassador Peceli Vocea, acting on behalf of the Fiji Revenue & Customs Authority, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of a WCO Regional Training Centre in Suva. The WCO will use the facilities of the Training Centre for the purpose of regional training, technical assistance meetings and other Customs related events. This will serve as a very useful means for capacity building and promotion of Customs effectiveness and efficiency in the countries of the Pacific Region. The WCO Council acknowledged the enormous challenges facing Customs administrations due to increasing volumes of trade, globalization of trade, and regional integration. In this context the dissemination of information, training and technical assistance are indispensable for the uniform implementation of key Customs-related international conventions, recommendations and other standards. The WCO will provide relevant and meaningful training and technical assistance to its Members through the Regional Training Centre. It is expected that the Regional Trading Centre will be formally inaugurated in August with the first training session conducted immediately after-wards.

Fiji's military strongman Voreqe Bainimarama says he is not surprised that there may be an assassination plot against him and says New Zealand should do something about "terrorists" in this country. Fiji nationals in Auckland said they had been raided by security officials investigating an assassination plot. A former Fiji cabinet minister raided said they had been told there was "credible evidence" that exiled Fiji Army Colonel Tevita Uluilakeba Mara and New Zealand national Anthony Fullman had plotted the killing while in New Zealand a fortnight ago. Bainimarama told Auckland Indian Radio Tarana from Seoul, South Korea, that a plot would not surprise him: "That is the work of cowards." An assassination plot would fit Colonel Mara's mode perfectly, he said. "Whether they can come to Fiji is a different matter, because they are cowards." He said groups like the Coalition for Democracy in Fiji, which operate in Australia and New Zealand and are linked to Colonel Mara, were trying to stop Bainimarama's work in Fiji. "It would not surprise me if there was intention to assassinate me; there is nothing new from that camp." He challenged anybody to try and
assassinate him once he got back to Fiji: "They will have to get through the security people at home." Asked whether he knew New Zealand authorities were investigating a plot, he said he did not know. "I would think the New Zealand government would do something about terrorists in their homeland." Bainimarama said he hoped New Zealand would send the alleged plotters to Fiji. Prime Minister John Key would not comment on the raids led by the Security Intelligence Service (SIS). "This is an operational matter. We have no comment on security and intelligence matters." An SIS official who raided the home of a former Fiji cabinet minister, Rajesh Singh, said they had "credible evidence" that Mara and Fullman were involved in the plot to kill Bainimarama and his attorney general Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum. Colonel Mara denied any knowledge of a plot. "Its news to me, I don't know anything about it, so I cant really comment." Singh was outraged that New Zealand security officials were acting on behalf of Bainimarama. Several other Fiji nationals have said they were also visited.
The office of Fijis Attorney General has been granted leave by the High Court to issue contempt proceedings against the Citizen Constitution Forum (CCF) and its director Reverend Akuila Yabaki. Speaking at a press conference Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the contempt proceeding arose out of an article titled Fiji the rule of law lost- an analysis of the law society charity report 2012, which is published in CCFs newsletter Tutaka in the April edition.
The contempt proceedings have been instituted against CCF as the proprietor and publisher of Tutaka and Akuila Yabaki as the editor, said SayedKhaiyum. The article published by CCF and Yabaki contained of words and statements essentially in our view scandalizes the courts in Fiji, he said. He said a real risk is imposed as the article undermines the authorities of judiciary in Fiji and the case will be called at the High Court in Suva in July 27.

The Naviti Resort was just recently voted as one of Australias Top 10 family-friendly resorts for 2012. Being a family orientated resort the Naviti has undertaken many projects to upgrade their facilities and to create a greater experience for their guests. One such project was carried out earlier in the week; the grounds breaking for a new toilet block near the swimming pool. A lot of activities also take place around the pool area and the setting up of this toilet block ten meters away from the swimming pool was handled by Coral Coast Builders. The project was initiated for guest
convenience since the current restroom is about 80 meters away from the swimming pool. With its swim-up bar, this would also be of great advantage to guests who utilizes the swim up bar. The resort is always attentive to guests needs. It ensures that it provides them with the best facilities for families and kids including activities and facilities for kids, childcare and babysitting services, staff hospitality, standard of accommodation, location, accessibility, safety, fun for the entire family, value for money and overall experience.
Miss World Fiji (MWF) 2012 Koini Vakaloloma left for China for Miss World pageant. This was confirmed by MWF national pageant director Andhy Blake. Blake said Vakaloloma is in Beijing now and is scheduled to leave for a tour around China with 119 other contestants from around the world. Vakaloloma will be welcomed onto the Miss World stage and will endure a month long tour through Hong Kong, China and Inner Mongolia before the crowning of the 62nd Miss World on August 18, 2012. Meanwhile, alarming figures which recently came to light showing that Fiji has one of the world's highest suicide rates has made Miss Fiji more determined to raise enough money to open Fiji's first Respite Centre,
providing shelter for the homeless, sex workers, transgender individuals and those in need of mental health care. As a mental health advocate she has made regular visits to meet sufferers and hear their stories, and is also championing the education of children in high schools and orphanages about the mental health issues they might face. As part of her campaign to raise awareness of mental health issues and reduce the stigma associated with mental conditions she has been active in helping organize and serve a lunch for psychiatric patients at one of Fiji's Mental Health Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and has been teaching art to those who have struggled with mental health-related issues in the past.
The Ministry of Health is urging the Fiji National University (FNU) to lower postgraduate diploma courses tuition fees for doctors. Manager Training and Development Fasala Vamarasi while addressing delegates at the Consultation Meeting on the Review of Ministry of Health's National Training Policy in Suva said the current tuition fees is too high and the university needs to have a breakdown of the fees as all the courses are delivered by senior medical officers. "The current $9,000 fee is too much if multiplied by 50 medical officers who are currently enrolled in the courses and we want FNU to at least reduce the fee by 10-20 percent." "The ministrys annual governments training fund allocation of $400,000 is
not enough to train doctors and nurses further in Fiji." "We need at least $1.2 million annually for training and the ministry is now looking to donors and funding partners for assistance." Adding on, Vamarasi urged doctors and nurses to take full advantage of scholarships offered by various organisations and prosper further in their career. Public Service Commission Setoki Mataitoga said for the Kingdom of Morrocco scholarship, they have received only one application in the medical category. With the scholarship deadline next week, Mataitoga urged medical officers to apply and make use of the opportunity.

Fijis very own White House opened its ivory doors to the Nadi public on Thursday evening. The White House Nightclub and Karaoke Bar is situated on the second floor of the RB Jetpoint complex along Nadis Martintar strip. It was officially opened by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Land Force Commander, Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga, who welcomed the opening alongside musicians Seru Serevi and Laisa Vulakoro. Behind Nadi Towns popular Steps Nightclub, its the second club for owner Choon-Sik Jiong. The up-market club boasts two separate houses for a main bar and karaoke club with outfitted electric lighting, a railed stage and four private rooms to cater for intimate parties. 95 per cent of the vibrant dcor and swanky furnishings were imported from Mr Jiongs native South Korea with the total investment costing $1.3 million. Its been a test of patience for Mr Jiong, whose application to open was initially rejected by authorities.
Surpassing all odds, the savvy businessman forged ahead with a goal to fill a particular niche in the Fijian night culture. I opened the White House to cater for the Asian night life. The Prime Minister has been working hard to attract Asian visitors to our tourism market but there isnt a proper karaoke bar around, and thats a big part of Asian night culture, he said. Furthermore, Martintars prime location in Nadis special tourism zone meant better operating hours and close proximity to backpack resorts, hotels and residential areas, surpassing the benefits of his other club in Nadi Town. This club should have been approved a long time ago. The Whitehouse in Washington is the top house in the world so I named this club that in the hope it becomes Fijis top club, he said. Mr Jiong migrated here in 1990 with his wife Telaite. Their ingenuity is reflected in the clubs separate accommodation for all patrons and the string of international flags that pay homage to its international clientele.
POLICE are reiterating the need for drivers to take precautionary measures when using the road in order to prevent accidents. The statement was made by police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri following a car accident which claimed the lives of two people and landed four people in hospital. "We are again appealing to motorists to take extra caution while driving because the passengers' safety is in their hands," he said. "Our team of officers is still investigating the matter and we hope to determine the cause of accident sometime soon. "Three of the victims are still recovering at the Labasa Hospital while
one remains at the Taveuni Hospital," he said. Insp Sokomuri has also urged passengers to always remind speeding drivers to drive within the posted speed limit. "If you are travelling in an over speeding vehicle, you have the right to ask the driver to slow down for your own safety. "Passengers should also be on the look-out when travelling long distances because accidents are bound to happen," he said. It was earlier reported the men were travelling from Matei towards Somosomo when the accident happened. Twenty people have died on the road this year.

More than $6000 was collected at the launch of the Fiji Society for the Blind's annual appeal. The launch which was at the Royal Suva Yacht Club was attended by heads of diplomatic missions, businessmen, representatives from various corporate companies and well-wishers of the society and $6200 was collected through auction, raffles and donations. "It is a very good start to the annual fundraising drive which will continue for the next three months," Fiji Society for the Blind executive Barbara Farouk said. "The funds raised will enable the society to continue its valuable work providing assistance to hundreds of
blind and visually impaired individuals throughout Fiji. "Without financial assistance many persons, especially children, would remain wrapped in a world of darkness unable to lead a normal life." Mrs Farouk thanked resort owners, business houses, corporate companies and individuals who gave items for the auction and raffles. She asked for continued assistance from the public to help support the society's cause. "Once again the society is appealing for your help and support for this year's annual appeal fundraising drive and most sincerely thank you for your assistance in the past," she said.

and has been released to the Ministry of Environment. Utilization of GEF Funds. At the conclusion of the 42nd meeting of the GEF Council, it was reiterated that SIDS has been underutilizing GEF resources and are not taking full advantage of the funding opportunities. In all the allocations approved for SIDS, only 16% of the total amount was used, a meager amount compared to those utilized by China, India, Brazil and the Americas. Resource and capacity constraints were identified as major impediments, hindering SIDS ability to fully satisfy GEFs requirements to access funds. A proposal was tabled at the meeting to streamline these requirements, the outcome of which will be known in the November meeting. Meanwhile Fijis Embassy in Washington together with the GEF Secretariat and the Ministry of Environment has jointly coordinated the hosting of a successful GEF sponsored Constituency Expanded Workshop at the Sofitel Hotel in Nadi. The workshop was for the members of Fijis 17-member Constituency, which included Indonesia, the current Chair and representative of the Constituency to the GEF Council, Philippines the Alternate and all PICs including East Timor. The aim of the workshop is to bring all stakeholders together and keep them abreast of GEFs strategies, policies and procedures and more importantly to encourage coordination. It also provides an opportunity for focal points to meet their counterparts from other countries in the region and other GEF partners to discuss and review projects, share lessons experiences from development and implementation of GEF projects and integration within national policy frameworks. Ambassador Thompson and ninety (90) other participants representing the Constituency attended the three day workshop in Nadi. In another development Fijis Embassy in Washington is lobbying for Fiji to represent the Constituency as the Alternate Member in the GEF Council in 2013, and thereafter the Chairmanship in 2014. Representatives of the Constituency at present are held by Indonesia as the member and Philippines the Alternate. Indonesia will complete her two-year team at the end of 2012 and as agreed, Philippines will assume the Chairmanship role and Fiji the Alternate. The Chair of the Constituency will be taken up by Fiji at the end of 2014. The work to solicit the support of members of the Constituency on Fijis bid to represent the Constituency.

At the launching, LICI General Manager, Mr Sanjeev Jain explained that "new clients under the scheme would only pay $14 per annum for $1,000 annual funeral coverage which was one of the lowest premiums on the market and would greatly assist the poor to cope with the financial burden of funerals." "The idea is not to make a sale but to contribute something to the society as a good corporate citizen to make a difference in the lives of that segment of customers who have never had a chance to be covered under an
insurance scheme." Jagannath Sami, CEO, TISI Sangam, Fiji conveyed, "This scheme is important to TISI Sangam because for the first time it reaches out to all our members who belong to vulnerable and low income families. This funeral benefit will provide them the support and security they need in times of difficulties. This partnership will enable our 20,000 TISI Sangam members to have access to an affordable insurance product." This partnership, which was formed out of a demand research project (funded
by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), PFIP and AusAID) conducted in Fiji last year, was facilitated by PFIP with financial assistance from AusAID. PFIP is a Pacific-wide programme helping to provide sustainable financial services to low income households. It is a joint project of the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and has received additional support from AusAID and the European Union. The programme is based at the UNDP Pacific Centre in Suva, Fiji.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama officiated at the opening of the new Lautoka Muslim Primary School in Lautoka which was attended by more than 200 guests including school children and parents. In welcoming the Prime Minister, the Fiji Muslim League national president Mr Haji Hafizud Dean Khan said that members of the league were fortunate to have the full support of government after the old school building was destroyed by a fire in November 2009 which left more than 500 students without proper school facilities. Following that fire, the Prime Minister had instructed authorities to provide the relevant assistance to the school. Government also contributed $200,000,
which saw the construction of 18 new school blocks in 2012 by builders Engineering Procure Construction. Mr Khan added that the school has also given an opportunity for i-Taukei students to attend the school as part of its efforts in encouraging multiracialism amongst communities in Fiji. In opening the school, Prime Minister Bainimarama said that it was an honor to be part of the event and encouraged parents and guardians to provide the necessary support for students at the school. The Fiji Muslim League has been a provider in education since 1929 and through the course of its long history, has made significant contributions to the provision of accessible and affordable education in Fiji.
The launch we are here to celebrate is a manifestation of our policies. This represents exactly the kind of development that helps us continue to grow our economy and show the international community that Fiji has the capacity in her people and infrastructure, PM Bainimarama said. The Minute Maid line will also carry the Fijian Made Logo on its packaging, inducting it into an exclusive club of more than 300 products that already bear the brand and highlights the quality of our locally manufactured products and also encourages our people to buy Fijian first, which helps keep money in our economy. Prime Minister Bainimarama also reminded invited guests present at the launching to take advantage of the voter registration centres and register for the 2014 elections and to also make individual submissions to the Constitutional Commission.

The President, His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau while addressing a regional conference on climate Change in Suva highlighted the work undertaken by the Fijian Government to minimizing the effects of climate change in the region. The conference which is a follow up symposium from the Rio +20 meeting in Brazil earlier this year addresses the next steps for Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS). Following the launch of Fijis first Climate Change Policy in March 2012, Ratu Epeli said that Fiji is working towards strengthening its laws and policies to address this global phenomenon. Fiji is currently undergoing policy and institutional reform that involves the updating of existing legislation and policies, Ratu Epeli said. The focus of the reform is to ensure sustainable economic and social development and thereby improve the livelihoods of all communities including local government in Fiji. The policy provides a platform for coordination among the different
sectors, direction on national positions and priorities regarding climate change mitigation and adaptation and recognizes the need for constructive collaboration amongst all relevant sectors. He highlighted to participants how climate change no longer affects only atoll island states such as Kiribati and Tuvalu and that larger regional countries needed to play a leading role in addressing the issue. On the Fiji scene, we have here today the chiefs from Rewa and Bau who have witnessed the ever rising sea level in their villages and while it may true that Fiji has enough land to accommodate her people from inundated areas, our social capital in culture and traditions will be affected speedily with difficulty to balance and hence it will affect us negatively through resettlement in new locations, Ratu Epeli added. The three day conference which is funded by the European Union has speakers from as far as Germany with Prime Ministers and Presidents from PSIDS giving firsthand account of developments in their nation.

Delta Air Lines Inc. and the FBI are trying to figure out how needles got into turkey sandwiches served aboard four flights from Amsterdam. One passenger was injured. The airline said that what appear to be sewing needles were found in six sandwiches on Sunday. One passenger on a flight to Minneapolis was injured, but the passenger declined to get medical attention, according to Delta spokeswoman Kristin Baur. The other needles were on two flights to Atlanta and one to Seattle. The FBI's Atlanta office has opened a criminal investigation into the matter, the agency said in a written statement. An FBI spokesman in Atlanta did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment. Baur said flight attendants stopped serving the sandwiches as soon as the needle was discovered. Messages went out to other flights en route from Amsterdam, where the sandwiches had been prepared by a catering company. Another sandwich served on the Minneapolis-bound flight also had a needle, Baur said. After the needles were found, passengers got pizza instead. Baur said security for its meal
production has been increased and it is using more prepackaged food while the investigation continues. "Delta is taking this matter extremely seriously and is cooperating with local and federal authorities who are investigating the incident. Delta has taken immediate action with our inflight caterer at Amsterdam to ensure the safety and quality of the food we provide onboard our aircraft," the airline said in a written statement. The sandwiches were made in the Amsterdam kitchen of catering company Gate Gourmet, and were to be served to business class passengers on Delta flights. Gate Gourmet spokeswoman Christina Ulosevich said the company has gotten no reports of similar incidents on any of the other airlines it serves out of Amsterdam. She said the company did not yet know how the needles got into the sandwiches. Gate Gourmet issued a statement saying, "We take this matter very seriously, and we have launched our own full-scale investigation." It also said it was "heightening our already stringent safety and security procedures, to prevent any recurrence."

"Qatar Airways set out on a mission 15 years ago when we launched to be the world's best airline and spread the airline's quality brand to all corners of the world. "Last year we achieved that. Retaining awards is always difficult, but we have managed to do so amid the tough competition which only shows we remain focused in our day to day job of offering passengers what they fully deserve the highest standards of service both in the air and on the ground. "The achievements further reflect the high standards that we set for ourselves and receiving the awards is fantastic recognition of the hard work and commitment of our staff across the world who help make Qatar Airways the success it is today." Skytrax Chief Executive Officer Edward Plaisted said: "To win the Airline of the Year award for a second successive year is a remarkable achievement for Qatar Airways, and a clear recognition of the continued efforts by Qatar Airways' management and staff to be the world's best airline. "Qatar Airways should be very proud of this fantastic customer recognition of their service standards, and ranking No 1 in the world at the 2012 Airline of the Year shows that they truly are a favourite airline among today's global travelers." Air travelers were surveyed during a 10-month period by telephone, questionnaires and online about their experiences with airlines on the ground and in the air. The survey measured passenger satisfaction across more than 38 key performance indicators of airline front-line product and service, including check-in, boarding, onboard seat comfort, cabin cleanliness, food, beverages, inflight entertainment and staff service. The survey covered more than 200 airlines, from the largest international airlines to smaller domestic carriers. Qatar Airways has seen rapid growth in just 15 years of operation, currently operating a modern fleet of 109 aircraft to 117 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America. Since the beginning of the year, Qatar Airways has launched flights to Baku (Azerbaijan); Tbilisi (Georgia); Kigali (Rwanda); Zagreb (Croatia), Erbil (Iraq), Baghdad, and most recently, Perth (Australia) with many more destinations planned during 2012. Over the next few months, Qatar Airways launches services to a diverse portfolio of new routes, including Kilimanjaro, Tanzania (July 25); Mombasa, Kenya (August 15); Yangon, Myanmar (October 3); Maputo, Mozambique (October 31) and a date yet-to-be-announced to the Serbian capital Belgrade.
Qatar Airways has once again triumphed at the annual Skytrax World Airline Awards, winning three top accolades including the main award Best Airline in the World for the second year running. SRI Lanka's navy has arrested 61 would-be asylum seekers heading to Australia and seized their fishing trawler, in the third incident of its kind in just two days. The navy intercepted the latest vessel carrying illegal immigrants off the island's eastern coast and escorted the boat to the naval port of Trincomalee, 260 kilometers northeast of the capital Colombo. "This boat had 61 men heading for Australia," a navy official said. The latest detection came a day after 131 people were arrested in two separate incidents of trying to leave the island illegally, police said. The number of Sri Lankans detained on charges of illegally trying to leave the country has reached more than 315
over the past week. Australia is facing a steady influx of asylum seekers arriving by boat, many of whom use Indonesia as a transit hub, boarding leaky wooden vessels there after fleeing their homes countries. Some 94 people are believed to have drowned after two boats sank in recent weeks. While most boats originate in Indonesia, there has been a recent spike in attempted crossings from Sri Lanka. Australia wants to deter boat people by transferring them to Malaysia for processing, in exchange for accepting thousands of Malaysia's registered refugees for resettlement. But the Gillard government has so far been unable to pass the necessary legislation through parliament.

Chris Sweeney and his husband were driving home to Seattle after a recent trip to Vancouver when they were stopped at the border for more than two hours and threatened with thousands of dollars in fines for dangerous contraband in the trunk of their car. Their suspicious cargo? Half a dozen Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs each filled with a tiny plastic toy a childhood favourite in Canada but an illegal choking hazard in the United States. I thought (the American border guard) had done his search and hadnt found anything, and he was joking with us, Sweeney, 35, told the reporter in an interview Wednesday. He wasnt joking. The popular German chocolate eggs are not sold in the U.S. because they are considered a choking hazard. They are also banned because the treats are considered adulterated food by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Sweeney said a border guard told him and his husband that they could be fined $2,500 per egg, and then ordered them to head to the port of entry, where they waited for more than two hours. We really didnt know what was going to happen, he said. I didnt know if maybe this was some really important thing that I just wasnt aware of and they were going to actually give us the fine of $15,000. But once inside, Sweeney said border
staff later brushed off the offence and merely told them never to bring the Kinder Surprise eggs across the border again. Mike Milne with U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the movement of Kinder eggs across the border into the United States has been an ongoing problem for years, particularly during the Easter holidays. Milne said officers do not usually fine travellers for carrying the chocolates, but they do normally confiscate them. Roughly 60,000 Kinder eggs were seized last year. Kinder eggs are prohibited just like narcotics are prohibited, he said. Our officers, if they encounter prohibited stuff, theyre subject to seizure. However, Sweeney said the contraband treats in his car were not confiscated, allowing him and his husband to share them with their family and friends back home. He said the ordeal was a complete waste of time. If it was so important that we be stopped and scolded and threatened with thousands of dollars in fines, youd think it would at least be important enough for them to take (the Kinder eggs), but they didnt, he said. Keeping the border secure is obviously important, but somebody needs to take a common sense look at this rule and probably just get rid of it.
Raymond Louie thinks the same permits from Halloween should be used around other celebrations You may soon have more opportunities to buy fireworks in Vancouver. A city councilor wants to see them made available for celebrations beyond Halloween. Raymond Louie says lots of people would like to have fireworks for events like New Year's, Chinese New Year, Diwali, Canada Day, or BC Day. "Allowing our citizens to enjoy and celebrate the festivals and their heritage that make up our multi-cultural city that we have." Louie says the city already has an effective permitting process to manage fireworks around Halloween, but doesn't think that run-up is enough. He says the same rules could be applied at other times of year, and he's asking for council's support to have staff examine the options.

Consumer debt growth was about 30 per cent lower in the second quarter than a year earlier the biggest slowdown since before the recession, according to a consumer credit study released Thursday. Equifax Canada's quarterly consumer credit trends report found that consumer indebtedness, excluding mortgage debt, grew 3.1 per cent year-over-year in the second quarter, down from 4.4 per cent in the same period of 2011. The study also found that high-interest credit card debt fell by 3.8 in the quarter and consumer bankruptcies were down 4.5 per cent from a year earlier. Meanwhile, bank loans and lines of credit showed very moderate growth compared to a year ago. And while consumers continued to take on debt, it is encouraging that the rate of acceleration is moderating significantly, said Nadim Abdo, vice-
at one per cent to stimulate a still fragile economy. However, Mark Carney, the central bank governor has issued repeated warnings that the plan comes with a consequence that could spell economic trouble in times ahead. The most overstretched consumers could find themselves sunk if interest rates rise. With household debt at an all-time high above 150 per cent of income, the Bank of Canada has declared it the number one domestic risk to the economy. Carney said Wednesday that government stimulus and household consumption backed by low interest rates had sustained the recovery so far, but there are limits to that approach. "We're seeing the limits on the household debt side which is why various measures are being taken,'' he said, referring to the most recent move toward tighter mortgage and lending rules.

Continued From Last Week Understand the interest rate variations Unfortunately it can get a bit complicated trying to navigate through the various interest rates and exactly how they are applied. Different rates can apply to different situations, dependent on how your card is used, and the frequency with which payments are made. The following examples would all have different rates applied. Making a purchase of goods or services Making a cash withdrawal Transferring the balance of your credit card debt to another card Balance transfers are often made as introductory offers to gain new customers. They are not offered to existing customers. The offer usually takes the form of being able to transfer the balance of your existing credit card to a new account, with a zero or low balance for a predetermined period. Once that period expires, you revert back to paying the normal rate for that particular type of account. However, there are a couple of things to take into account, the zero or low interest only applies to the balance you are transferring, and any subsequent purchases or cash withdrawals will attract the normal interest rate. Also check whether there are any transfer or administration fees, these could outweigh the benefits you are gaining with the low interest rates. Credit card fees There are a range of fees and charges that can be applied to credit cards. So it is suggested when selecting a credit card, you read the policy terms carefully, so you know exactly what will be applied, and how they are applied. The most common fees are: Annual fees Late payment fees Balance transfer fees Cash withdrawal fees Exceeding credit limit fees Terms and conditions
What information should I know when picking a credit card? Credit lenders are required to provide you with all the details of your credit contract before you enter into the agreement and choose a credit card. By using the credit card you are considered to have accepted the contract with its subsequent terms and conditions. Prior to entering the contract you must be advised of the following: Maximum limit on the credit card The yearly interest rate and how each rate is applied. How the interest is calculated Minimum monthly payment required All fees and charges, and when they are payable If the interest, fees or charges are variable, how will the credit provider notify you of changes? Should you breach the terms of the contract, you may be liable for recovery costs Will a commission be paid to or by the credit lender for obtaining your business? Details of any optional insurance provided such loan protection, that you have agreed to Credit Card Needs Checklist A low interest rate credit card is best for anyone who plans to finance their purchases over a few months because their interest payments will be kept to a minimum. An introductory offer that lowers the purchase interest rate for the first few months would be even better, as long as the revert-to rate is also one of the lowest. A balance transfer credit card would suit your credit card needs if you have a debt on a card from another provider and you want to reduce your interest charges for a set period by switching to a new provider with an introductory offer. A zero annual fee credit card would be your best bet if you only intend to use your card for occasional spending that
When it comes to choosing a credit card, the choice isn't always easy!
you will clear in full at the end of every month. In this case, the usually higher interest rates on these cards will not be an issue. These card types are also ideally suited for people who happen to pay off their cards in full each month as it effectively gives them a no-cost credit card. A rewards credit card is great for anyone who naturally puts a lot of spending through their credit card and who therefore feels they might as well take advantage of it and build up points to redeem for rewards - perhaps flights, cash back, merchandise or gift cards. With credit card comparison websites full of all the pertinent information, there is really no excuse for ending up with the wrong credit card. Provided you properly analyze you credit card needs prior to visiting such a site, you should do just fine. Things you should know about selecting a credit card The law also states that a credit provider is required to supply you with information regarding your rights and obligations under the terms of the contract. Usually you will be provided with a booklet containing the relevant information. This should contain information pertinent to: The contract Ending the contract Contract changes Insurance Advice regarding payment difficulty or, what to do, if you consider the contract terms unreasonable It is important to read and make sure you understand the information. If you have questions, ask the credit provider to explain the answers. If you are still concerned obtain legal advice from a qualified financial counselor. What is a credit limit? The maximum amount that can be charged to your credit card is known as your credit limit. This amount is determined by your credit card provider, and is based on information
you have supplied in your application. It can be very tempting when you first get your new credit card to go on a wild shopping spree, but you need to exert some restraint else you will find it costly at a later date. Particularly if you have been given a high limit, and you feel you might be tempted to spend it, you can ask your provider to reduce it, and then apply to have it increased at a later date if necessary. Don't ever forget credit lenders are all about making money from your business. Only take on board an amount you know you can repay. Minimum payments When you only make minimum repayments each month, rather than paying the balance in full, you will be subject to interest being applied to your account. So realistically, it will take longer to pay off your credit card by only making small payments. Not many people do the math to work out exactly what they do pay back with the interest included. Choose a credit card carefully with the right interest rate for you. As an example: If the balance on your credit card each month was about $2,800, and you made the minimum payment of 2% of the debt, it could take up to 50 years to pay the total debt on your credit card. To take this to the next scenario, with a yearly interest rate of 18%, you would have paid at least $25,000 to your credit card company in interest, over the years. Isn't that a scary thought? Increases in credit limits When you have a credit card for a while and make regular payments, quite often your provider will offer you periodic credit limit increases. Consider these offers cautiously - unless you are sure that you can make extra repayments on an increased loan, don't accept the increase. Keep in mind it will take longer to pay your debt, and you will be paying more interest.

Hours after bedtime, do you find your little one wandering the hall looking dazed and confused? If you have a sleepwalking child, you're not alone. It can be unnerving to see, but sleepwalking is very common in kids and most sleepwalkers only do so occasionally and outgrow it by the teen years. Still, some simple steps can keep your young sleepwalker safe while walking about. Despite its name, sleepwalking (also called somnambulism) actually involves more than just walking. Sleepwalking behaviors can range from harmless (sitting up), to potentially dangerous (wandering outside), to just inappropriate (kids may even open a closet door and urinate inside). No matter what kids do during sleepwalking episodes, though, it's unlikely that they'll remember ever having done it! As we sleep, our brains pass through five stages of sleep stages 1, 2, 3, 4, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Together, these stages make up a sleep cycle. One complete sleep cycle lasts about 90 to 100 minutes. So a person experiences about four or five sleep cycles during an average night's sleep. Sleepwalking most often occurs during the deeper sleep of stages 3 and 4. During these stages, it's more difficult to wake someone up, and when awakened, a person may feel groggy and disoriented for a few minutes. Kids tend to sleepwalk within an hour or two of falling asleep and may walk around for anywhere from a few seconds to 30 minutes. Causes of Sleepwalking Sleepwalking is far more common in kids than in adults, as most sleepwalkers outgrow it by the early teen years. It may run in families, so if you or your partner are or were sleepwalkers, your child may be too. Other factors that may bring on a sleepwalking episode include: lack of sleep or fatigue irregular sleep schedules illness or fever certain medications stress (sleepwalking is rarely caused by an underlying medical, emotional, or psychological problem). Behaviors During Sleepwalking Of course, getting out of bed and walking around while still sleeping is the most obvious sleepwalking symptom. But young sleepwalkers may also: sleep talk be hard to wake up seem dazed be clumsy not respond when spoken to sit up in bed and go through repeated motions, such as rubbing their eyes or fussing with their pajamas Also, sleepwalkers' eyes are open, but they don't see the same way they do when they're awake and they often think they're in different rooms of the house or different places altogether. Sometimes, these other conditions may accompany sleepwalking: sleep apnea (brief pauses in breathing while sleeping) bedwetting night terrors Is Sleepwalking Harmful? Sleepwalking itself is not harmful. However, sleepwalking episodes can be hazardous since sleepwalking kids aren't awake and may not realize what they're doing, such as walking down stairs or opening windows. Sleepwalking is not usually a sign that something is emotionally or psychologically wrong with a child. And it doesn't cause any emotional harm. Sleepwalkers probably won't even remember the night time stroll. How to Keep a Sleepwalker Safe Although sleepwalking isn't dangerous by itself, it's important to take precautions so that your sleepwalking child is less likely to fall down, run into something, walk out the front door, or drive (if your teen is a sleepwalker). To help keep your sleepwalker out of harm's way: Try not to wake a sleepwalker because this might scare your child. Instead, gently guide him or her back to bed. Lock the windows and doors, not just in your child's bedroom but throughout your home, in case your young sleepwalker decides to wander. You may consider extra locks or child safety locks on doors. Keys should be kept out of reach for kids who are old enough to drive. To prevent falls, don't let your sleepwalker sleep in a bunk bed. Remove sharp or breakable things from around your child's bed. Keep dangerous objects out of reach. Remove obstacles from your child's room and throughout your home to prevent a stumble. Especially eliminate clutter on the floor (i.e., in your child's bedroom or playroom). Install safety gates outside your child's room and/or at the top of any stairs.

Higher Levels Of Vitamin C Could Help Cut Heart Disease, Stroke And Cancer
The recommended dietary allowance, or RDA, of vitamin C is less than half what it should be, scientists have argued in a recent report. "It's time to bring some common sense to this issue, look at the totality of the scientific evidence, and go beyond some clinical trials that are inherently flawed," said Balz Frei, professor and director of the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, and one of the world's leading experts on the role of vitamin C in optimum health. "Significant numbers of people in the U.S. and around the world are deficient in vitamin C, and there's growing evidence that more of this vitamin could help prevent chronic disease," Frei said. "The way clinical researchers study micronutrients right now, with the same type of so-called 'phase three randomized placebo-controlled trials' used to test pharmaceutical drugs, almost ensures they will find no beneficial effect. We need to get past that," the researcher noted. Unlike testing the safety or function of a prescription drug, the researchers said, such trials are ill suited to demonstrate the disease prevention capabilities of substances that are already present in the human body and required for normal metabolism. Some benefits of micronutrients in lowering chronic disease risk also show up only after many years or even decades of optimal consumption of vitamin C a factor often not captured in shorterterm clinical studies. A wider body of metabolic, pharmacokinetic, laboratory and demographic studies suggested just the opposite, that higher levels of vitamin C could help reduce the chronic This is because, the scientists said, medical experts insist on evaluating this natural, but critical nutrient in the same way they do pharmaceutical drugs and reach faulty conclusions as a result. The researchers pointed out that there's compelling evidence that the RDA of vitamin C should be raised to 200 milligrams per day for adults, up from its current levels in the United States of 75 milligrams for women and 90 for men. Rather than just prevent the vitamin C deficiency disease of scurvy, they said, it's appropriate to seek optimum levels that will saturate cells and tissues, pose no risk, and may have significant effects on public health at almost no expense about a penny a day if taken as a dietary supplement. diseases that today kill most people in the developed world heart disease, stroke, cancer, and the underlying issues that lead to them, such as high blood pressure, chronic inflammation, poor immune response and atherosclerosis. "We believe solid research shows the RDA should be increased. And the benefit-to-risk ratio is very high. A 200 milligram intake of vitamin C on a daily basis poses absolutely no risk, but there is strong evidence it would provide multiple, substantial health benefits," Frei said. An excellent diet with the recommended five to nine daily servings of fruits and raw or steam-cooked vegetables, together with a six-ounce glass of orange juice, could provide 200 milligrams of vitamin C a day.

Diabetes drug metformin, which costs as little as 2pence a tablet, could offer a major breakthrough in the treatment of prostate cancer. Researchers have found that the medicine causes tumours to shrink by slowing the rate at which cancerous cells grow. If the results are confirmed in bigger trials, it raises the possibility that men could be given the cheap, readily available drug as soon as they are diagnosed, the media reported. Metformin is widely used on the NHS to treat patients with type 2 diabetes. But recent studies highlighting the drug's effects against a variety of tumours have generated considerable excitement among cancer researchers looking for powerful new treatments. Last year, scientists discovered it could slash the risk of ovarian cancer by around 40 per cent. And Cancer Research UK is currently funding a major five-year study, involving early 5,000 British women with breast cancer, to see if the drug will stop the disease returning and boost survival rates. Other research teams around the world are investigating metformin's powers against skin, lung and pancreatic cancer, with promising early results. In the latest study, doctors at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Canada, tested the drug on 22 men after they noticed that it stunted prostate cancer cell growth in laboratory experiments. All of the men had been diagnosed with tumours and were due to undergo surgery to have their prostates removed. For six weeks before their operation, each one took 500mg of metformin three times a day, during which time researchers measured the rate at which the tumor cells multiplied. The results, presented at the recent American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting in Chicago, showed malignant cells grew at a significantly slower rate once the men were put on the drug, suggesting metformin might be able to keep tumours under control. The findings support a 2009 study, which found that men taking metformin every day to control their diabetes were up to 44 per cent less likely to develop prostate cancer. "We compared what the prostate cancer looked like when it was first diagnosed to what it looked like when it was removed. And although these are preliminary results, it appeared to reduce the growth rate of prostate cancer in a proportion of men," said Dr Anthony Joshua, a cancer specialist who carried out the latest study. Metformin works by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver and helping cells mop up sugar that is circulating in the bloodstream, preventing damage from excessive blood sugar levels. Eleanor Barrie, Cancer Research UK's senior science information officer, noted: "Larger trials will tell us more in the next few years."
Women end up requiring reading glasses early on because they hold books and other reading material closer to their eyes than men, says a new study. The researchers found no difference in the ability of men and women to focus on objects at near distance. Women need bifocals earlier because of shorter arms, which means they hold things closer, raising their odds of things appearing blurred as they age. Scientists from the University of California said women's need for reading glasses earlier was "likely due to differences in preferred reading distances or arm length as women tend to hold reading materials closer than men do," the journal Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science reported. The researchers were studying presbyopia - the loss of near vision that occurs with age. The deterioration results from the stiffening of the eyeball's lens, which makes zooming in on close objects more difficult, leading to blurred vision and the need for reading glasses. The researchers added: These findings could impact global vision care in multiple ways. The findings reinforce the need for presbyopia correction programmes for women - a group that often has greater unmet vision needs in developing countries.

Madhur Bhandarkar is well known for his woman oriented movies that exposes the harsh realities of the real world on the face of the audience. Fashion and Chandni Bar were grim film that showcased the dark alleys of fashion world and prostitution. The director is back again with his new movie Heroine. It is supposed to depict the story of a Bollywood heroine. It will show the not so comfortable nooks and crannies of our very own Bollywood industry. The movie has been surrounded in controversy from the very beginning of the project. The rumor making the round was the riff raff between the actor Arjun Rampal and the director. The bone of controversy being that the role of the actor was over shadowed by the leading actress in the movie, Kareena Kapoor. He was even side lined from the promos of the movie. Even the producer of the movie was not happy with the television trailers of Heroine. Madhur and the producer didnt agree on the prepared trailers which delayed airing of the promos. The trailers showed Bebo smoking, drinking and doing crazy acts. This alarmed the producer about this might attract an A certificate from censor and
it needed to be mellowed down. The promos were supposed to be aired on June 1st, 2012. In a recent development the Censor board has given the movie an A or adult only rating. Madhur doesnt seem raffled with the decision of the board. His comment on Twitter is a testimony to this, which states As expected got an A certificate from the censor board. In fact it seems now days getting an A rating is a status symbol and Bollywood is using it in its advantage to promote the movies. Jism 2 is a glowing example of this trend. Madhur had earlier explicitly stated that the movie will depict the real incidents and practices in the tinsel town industry. However, the role of Kareena Kapoor is not based on any particular actress of the industry from the past or present. Though the soul of the movie might be similar to Dirty picture it doesnt have any role model like Silk Smitha. We are eager to learn more about the project but silence is all that we get from the Heroine team. We sure hope that we get treated to another good movie from Madhur in the end.
The trailers of JOKER that have been released in the cinema halls recently have started creating a buzz about Akshay Kumar's new film on offer, which is going to hit the screens in the month of August. For Akshay Kumar it would be a matter of pride that with JOKER his century of films in Hindi cinema would be completed. Indeed, JOKER is going to be the 100th film for Akshay Kumar in his long acting career. For Akshay Kumar, it indeed is a lucky year as two of his films HOUSEFULL 2 and ROWDY RATHORE have crossed 100 crore mark. Kumar would be hoping that JOKER should overhaul the collections of both these films as he has as his costar Sonakshi Sinha in JOKER as well. For Akshay Kumar it certainly is a monumental achievement as he has reached this position without any godfather in the industry or having a genealogy that could help him to make his debut. But Akshay Kumar should thank one man for the position that he has reached today. As it has been informed
by Christina Daniels in the Biography of Aamir Khan, I Will Do It My Way, Akshay Kumar had appeared for screen test for the role in JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDAR which ultimately went to Deepak Tijori. Had Akshay Kumar been cast in this role in JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDAR, who knows where he would have been today. But that is what fate is all about and that is why perhaps he is known as the Khiladi Kumar, or a player who is not bothered to take the risks to make his mark. JOKER seems to be a good sci-fi film and the manner in which the genre is being appreciated by the audience and the kind of special effects that have employed in the film JOKER should turn out to be perhaps another 100 crore venture as well. For all the stakeholders, be it Farah Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shirish Kunder, indeed JOKER should make a mark. It can be catalyzed, if JOKER is publicized as Akshay Kumar's 100th film. May be the publicity department associated with JOKER should take a note.
Dabangg girl, Sonakshi Sinha is dating a man who is bit elder to her. Not only this, he is also a divorcee. Sonakshi Sinha has always tried to keep her personal life under wraps. But rumor has it that she is no more single and is dating Bunty Sachdeva, who is a sports and celebrity manager. Bunty is also the brother-in-law of Sohail Khan. Sonakshi Sinha has always maintained that she is single. "I don't want any roads to be cleared. I am single by choice. I really have no time for men," says Sonakshi Sinha.
Also, when recently Shatrughan Sinha was admitted to the hospital, Bunty was one of the first persons to rush to the hospital. Bunty Sachdeva handles Sonakshi Sinha's endorsements and Sonakshi Sinha is very possessive about him. The actress gets very angry whenever someone talks about Bunty's former wife and ex-girlfriends. Bunty Sachdeva has dated Sushmita Sen and Neha Dhupia in the past. Well, we wonder what Sonakshi Sinha will say now!

Dilip Kumar, (born December 11, 1922, as Muhammad Yusuf Khan) is an Indian film actor and a former Member of Parliament. He made debut as an actor in the drama picture Jwar Bhata (1944), produced by Bombay Talkies. He is also known as Tragedy King, and is described as "the ultimate method actor" by Satyajit Ray. Kumar's career has spanned five decades and over 60 films. Critics acclaimed him among one of the greatest actors in the history of Hindi cinema. Kumar is the first actor to receive a Filmfare Best Actor Award (1954) and shares the record for the most number of Filmfare awards won for that category with Shah Rukh Khan, (eight wins). The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 for his contributions towards Indian cinema. He starred in films of a variety of genres such as the romantic Andaz (1949), Aan (1952), the dramatic Devdas (1955), the comical Azaad (1955), the historical Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and the social Ganga Jamuna (1961). In 1976, Kumar took a five-year break from film performances and returned with a character role in the film Kranti (1981) and continued his career playing central character roles in films such as Shakti (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991). His last film was Qila (1998). Dilip Kumar has acted with actress Vyjayanthimala the most, where they both had acted seven films together including the former's home production Gunga Jamuna resulting in great on-screen chemistry and an alleged affair between them.l Early life Dilip Kumar was born in Peshawar (now in Pakistan), British India. He was born into a Hindko speaking family, and his father, Lala Ghulam Sarwar, was a fruit merchant who owned orchards in Peshawar and Deolali (in Maharashtra,
India). In the late 1930's his family of 12 members relocated to Mumbai. In the early 1940's Kumar with the help of Paidi Jairaj spoke to his father about his interest in working in films to which he objected, and due to some difference with his father, Kumar left for Pune where he started his career as a canteen owner and a dry fruit supplier. Kumar has suggested that even though he grew up in Peshawar he will always consider himself as a true Indian. In 1943, actress Devika Rani, and her husband Himanshu Rai who owned Bombay Talkies spotted Kumar in Aundh military canteens Pune, and cast him with a lead role in their film Jwar Bhata (1944), which marked Kumar's entry into the Bollywood film industry. Hindi author Bhagwati Charan Varma gave him the screen name Dilip Kumar. Career Kumar's first film Jwar Bhata (1944) went unnoticed, it was Jugnu (1947) which became his first major hit at box office. He went on to appear in many hit films including Mela (1948), Andaz (1949), Deedar (1951), Devdas (1955), Yahudi (1958) and Madhumati (1958). These films established his screen image as the "Tragedy King". Together with Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand he was the biggest star in Bollywood in the 1950s. He starred alongside Raj Kapoor in Andaz (1949) and with Dev Anand in Insaniyat (1955). He formed popular on-screen pairings with many of the top actresses at the time including Nargis, Kamini Kaushal, Meena Kumari, Madhubala and Vyjanthimala. Depressed after playing many tragic roles in 1950's, Kumar took up his psychiatrist's suggestion that he take on lighter roles which he performed in films such as Aan (1952), Azaad (1955) and Kohinoor (1960). In 1960 he portrayed Prince Salim in the historical film Mughal-e-Azam which as of 2008 was the second highest grossing film in Hindi film history. In 1961 he produced and starred in Ganga Jamuna in which he and his brother Nasir Khan played the title roles, this was the only film he produced. In 1962 British director David Lean offered him the role of "Sherif Ali" in his film Lawrence of Arabia (1962), but Kumar declined the to perform in the movie. The role eventually went to Omar Sharif, the Egyptian actor. His next film Leader (1964) was below average at the box office. In 1967 Dilip Kumar played a dual role of twins separated at birth in the hit film Ram Aur Shyam. His career slumped in the 1970s with films like Dastaan (1970) and Bairaag (1976), the latter in which he played triple roles failing at the box office. He took a five year hiatus from
Dilip Kumar
films from 1976 to 1981. Kumar has suggested that even though he grew up in Peshawar he will always consider himself as a true Indian. In 1981 he returned with the multistarrer Kranti which was the biggest hit of the year. He went onto play character roles in hit films including Shakti (1982), Vidhaata (1982), Mashaal (1984) and Karma (1986). In 1991 he starred alongside veteran actor Raaj Kumar in Saudagar which was his last successful film. In 1993 he won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1996 he was attached to make his directorial debut with a film titled Kalinga but the film was shelved. In 1998 he made his last film appearance in the unsuccessful film Qila where once again he played dual roles as an evil landowner and his twin brother investigating his death. His films Mughal-e-Azam and Naya Daur were fully colorized and re-released in 2004 and 2008 respectively. Films refused Dilip Kumar was very choosy, and turned down lead roles in many films which eventually were released to great box office success, including Lawrence of Arabia, Pyaasa, The Rains Came and Sangam. Public life Kumar has been active in efforts to bring the people of India and Pakistan closer together. He has been a member of the upper house of Parliament since 2000. He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994. In 1998 he was awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, the highest civilian award conferred by the government of Pakistan. He is the second Indian to receive the award. At the time of the Kargil War, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray demanded Kumar return his Nishan-e-Imtiaz, arguing that "He must return Nishan-eImtiaz following that country's blatant aggression on Indian soil." Kumar refused, saying: "This award was given to me for the humane activities to which I have dedicated myself. I have worked for the poor, I have worked for many years to bridge the cultural and communal gaps between India and Pakistan. Politics and religion have created these boundaries. I have striven to bring the two people together in whatever way I could. Tell me, what does any of this have to do with the Kargil conflict?" Personal life Kumar married actress and beauty queen Saira Banu in year 1966 when he was aged 44 and she was 22. He also secretly married a Pakistani lady Asma in the early eighties but divorced her when Saira Banu refused to accept the marriage. His brothers are Nasir Khan, Ehsan Khan and Aslam Khan. Kumar's younger brother Nasir Khan was also an actor and appeared opposite him in Ganga Jamuna (1961) and Bairaag (1976). Legacy and awards Dilip Kumar is widely considered to be one of the greatest actor in the history of Hindi cinema. Kumar holds the Guinness World Record for winning the maximum number of awards by an Indian actor. He has received many awards throughout his career, including 8 Filmfare Best Actor awards and 19 Filmfare nominations. Kumar was appointed Sheriff of Mumbai (an honorary position) in 1980, He was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan (a third highest civilian award) in 1991 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994, and NTR National Award in 1997 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Kumar was awarded Nishan-e-Imtiaz in 1997, (a highest civilian award in Pakistan) conferred by the Government of Pakistan. He was also awarded CNN-IBN Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. Movie Review
Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Diana Penty. Directed by: Homi Adajania.
moves in with the vixen Veronica where Meera is already ensconced after being deserted by her caddish NRI husband (Randeep Hooda, struggling to impart substance to his wafer-thin role). By the time the triangle concludes everyone is in love with Meera. Audience included. Diana as the angelic girl from Delhi who is left bereft on foreign shores (many shades from Aishwarya Rai's Aa Ab Laut Chalen) is the discovery of the year. She stops her Good Girl's role from becoming sickeningly sugary. And that's no small achievement for a newcomer. "Cocktail" is not quite as intoxicating as it sounds. But it's a heady brew about beautiful people trying to find themselves in places where life is an endless party. The music is effective in conveying the pseudo-euphoria of people who drown their solitude in noise. Saif is likeable when he doesn't try too hard to be the roving-eyed rogue. His performance in drag to "Sheila ki jawaani" is brave. The performance on the whole is more smug than brave.
'Cocktail'
Rating:***
Out of the three protagonists in this wacky menage a trois, two people are not as beautiful inside as they are from the outside. Gautam and Veronica are deeply flawed characters. He, a certifiable jerk who thinks of women, good times and partying, in that order, all the time. She, Veronica quite like her namesake in the Archies comics, is a sexy, naughty, loud siren. But what happens when the party ends? What happens when the constant search for that elusive state of being known as Good Times bores you to death? Veronica soon finds out. In painful revelations of the darkness under the neon. It's a dream role for any actress; and Deepika Padukone, facing the biggest challenge of her career, sinks her beautiful teeth into the role with the hunger of a tamed tigress who has been let loose in a jungle for just one romp. She gets out of her comfort zone and lets the mascara run down her distraught face with a couldn'tcare-less gusto that glamour girls don't generally adopt. It's a performance to be admired. In truth, Deepika would have been far more comfortable playing the butterwon't-melt-in-the-mouth Meera (a hugely impressive debutante Diana Penty). Deepika has apparently chosen to play the fun-loving bitch who
somewhere down the line, realises she wants all the things that he had so far scoffed at. Not surprisingly, the film is written by Imtiaz Ali in whose "Socha Na Tha" and "Love Aaj Kal" we met the commitment-phobic hero. In fact, there is really no difference between Saif Ali Khan in "Love Aaj Kal" and in "Cocktail". Except that the womanizer in the new avatar makes a lot more faces. Experience makes for expressiveness. They both shun true love when it stares them in the face. And then of course, the rest that follows is predictable. "Cocktail" is not high on surprises. The two main characters are prematurely jaded, bored out of their wits by an excess of hedonism. Into their lives arrives the timid golden-hearted jilted bride who needs a home and a place to call her own. The film is really about three unmoored characters finding their bearings. That it has been shot in London is a happy circumstance for the characters. Cinematographer Anil Mehta makes them look ravishing in their rainwashed lives with glimmers of sunshine peeping out in tantalizing scoops. Unfortunately Saif silhouetted against the London's quaint bustle is a bit of a cliche. He brings nothing new to his role, and he isn't entirely to be blamed for it. Saif's is a thankless part. He
Boman Irani and Dimple Kapadia playing siblings are brilliant, specially the former who seems incapable of giving an under-done or over-done performance. Like Deepika, Dimple is remarkable for getting out of her comfort zone and doing a role that would traditionally go to Kirron Kher. Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty are gorgeous in their respective spaces. "Cocktail" is a very good-looking film about people who constantly seek a good time and then realise what they thought to fun was a farce. The emotional transitions are achieved with a fair degree of smoothness. You kind of grow to like all three protagonists, blemishes and all. Director Homi Adjania who made the eccentric "Being Cyrus" shows a casual familiarity with the realm of the romcom. He takes the basic ingredients of the genre and plays around with the components, to emerge with a concoction that is quite appealing in its self-deprecating humour and a rather unusual appetite for partying.

Kritika Kamra
Narayani Shashtri
Anas Rashid:
He is a psychology student from Punjab and a 2004 winner of the Mr. Punjab title. His first stint was in the popular TV serial Kahin to Hoga where he played Kartik Ahluwalia. Next appearance was in Star Plus Prithviraj Chauhan where he played the lead. Now he plays the humble and soft spoken Suraj in Diya Aur Baati Hum which is the most watched serial on Star Plus. Anas is so handsome and well built that he is perfect for becoming a mainstream actor in Bollywood. Be it romantic or an angry young man; Anas would blend into every character seamlessly.
She has an amazing body and could give any mainstream actress a run for her money. She played the bubbly Arohi in Kitni Mohabbat Hai. In fact the serial became quite popular as the audience loved the pair of Arjun and Arohi. Kritika would be a great choice for casting as the lead heroine or as an actress in a supporting role. Her glamour would scorch the silver screen. She is currently playing the role of Dr. Nidhi in Kuch Toh Log Kahenge.
Shakti Mohan
Jennifer Winget
She is a regular face in Doordarshan serials and her first serial on a cable channel was Kusum where she played the role of a plotting Aunt Natasha aka Tashu Bua. Now she can be seen on Zee Tv in the serial Phir Subha Hogi where she plays a Zamindars courtesan. Narayani has sharp looks and large eyes which make her perfect for the role of a Bollywood vamp. Movies nowadays are either based on the three friends formula or are raw political satires. We need actors like Narayani to bring back the sexy vamp era in Bollywood.
Mona Singh
She has already featured as Kareena Kapoors sister in Three Idiots. She was pivotal to the film in the sense that her labor pains occurred at the right time and saved the three idiots from being expelled from the college. Now that she has already stepped into Bollywood as a supporting actress; Mona Singh could consider grabbing a role where she would be the leading actress. Considering her acting prowess she would soon be the object of envy for a lot of mainstream actresses. See
Weve seen Katrina Kaif grooving to a lavani item number, Chikni Chameli, in Agneepath, Vidya Balan in Mala Jau De in Ferrari Ki Sawaari and now, the new item girl in town, to move to a lavani number is none other than our very beautiful Rani Mukherjee. The song is choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant. Sachin Kundalkar, director of the film said, Rani does three item numbers in her dream in Aiyya. In this film, the girl has this habit of dreaming. One of her item numbers is a lavani song, again in her dream. She was quite good with her lavani dance. She shared a great equation with Vaibhavi Merchant. She did rehearsals on the sets. So its a rapid, classical, sensuous lavani song, he added. The film is titled Aiyya and is coproduced by Anurag Kashyap and Viacom 18. Rani Mukherjee plays a Marathi girl who finds a man desirable because he smells good. She is paired opposite southern star Prithvi Raj.

Live Theatre
Fun for your and old can be had with a visit to take in Altar Boyz, a dynamic and refreshing 90 minute musical comedy from the Arts Club Theatre. Perfect for any time of year this show boasts five talented young men with a passion for music and religion. Give me that old time religion is at the core of this Bill Millerd directed show. Here the tenets of Christian living are turned on their ears as these bible thumping characters create havoc on a whole host of religious issues. Names taken from the Bible come in handy when Mathew, Luke, Mark, Juan and Abraham do their best to convert the unwashed. Smart dialogue, crisp delivery and snappy lively songs make Altar Boyz memorable entertainment. Even the audience gets caught up in the act as the odd spectator gets tossed up stage to undergo a serenade of sorts by one of these pleasant lads. At the core of this story is humanity

Charlie Sheen has announced that he will be donating 1 million dollars to support men and women in uniform. According to officials with the military support group United Service Organisations, the former 'Two and a Half Men' star donated $250,000 to the USO with plans to round off that donation to an even $1 million. The 46-year-old actor said that he will donate 1 percent of the profits from his 'Anger Management' earnings with a minimum of $1 million and an unlimited cap. So the more dollars he makes from his show, the more dollars goes to the USO.
"Sheen's support is greatly appreciated, especially from our wounded warriors and their families," the reporter quoted General John I. Pray, Jr., Executive Vice President and Joint Chief of Staff, US Air Force as saying in a statement. Sheen also released a statement saying, "It's an honor for me to be able to give back to these men and women of the military who have done so much for all of us." "They put their lives on the line for us every day, and I'm just happy that my work on 'Anger Management' can bring a little bit of relief to the troops and their families," Sheen said.
Freida Pinto, who became an overnight star after the success of "Slumdog Millionaire" has described her latest flick "Trishna" a beautiful, yet tragic tale. The movie, which is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's 19th century novel 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles', has been directed by Michael Winterbottom The flick is set in rural Rajasthan and narrates a tale of a village girl torn between her traditional upbringing and the dreams of a girl from modern India, the New York Daily News reported. Pinto plays the title role of Trishna, an auto-rickshaw driver's daughter, who falls for a rich boy. "I guess the journey is very beautiful and at the same time very tragic
because it goes from being really innocent to being in a situation of almost desperation and finally to redemption," she said. "It's quite an intense journey for one girl to go through," she said. Elaborating more on the role, the 27-year-old actress revealed that Trishna was a tough role to play because it's so different from what she is in real life. The actress admitted that she has a very outspoken personality and "just can't kind of lay back and just get bombarded with things that I don't believe in." "So I guess that was really hard for me, especially because we didn't really have a solid script," she added.
Suri Was Main Concern Of Divorce Settlement, Says Tom Cruise's Lawyer
Tom Cruise's lawyer, who negotiated the divorce settlement between the warring star couple, has revealed that the duo's 6-year-old daughter Suri was the actor's main concern. The court has granted primary custody of the child to Katie Holmes, while Cruise has been given generous visitation rights. "Tom was always most interested in his child," People magazine quoted Tom's lawyer Bert Fields as saying. "His concern was for Suri. "He will have a meaningful relationship with Suri," Fields said. However, Fields could not reveal a specific time or date as to when the 50-year-old actor will see his daughter, who has been spotted spending time with her mum Katie Holmes. "I don't know the details of his schedule, so I can't comment. My guess is he'll be seeing Suri very soon," he added.

Melbourne, Australia
to a virtual stop in the 1960s. A notable film shot and set in Melbourne during this lull is 1959's On the Beach. The 1970s saw a major renaissance of Australian film, giving rise to the Australian New Wave, as well as the Ocker and Ozploitation genres, instigated by Melbourne-based productions Stork and Alvin Purple respectively. Other 1970s Melbourne films, such as Picnic at Hanging Rock and Mad Max, would achieve worldwide acclaim. 2004 saw the construction of Melbourne's largest film and television studio complex, Docklands Studios Melbourne, which has hosted many domestic films and television shows, as well as international features Ghost Rider, Knowing, Charlotte's Web, Nightmares and Dreamscapes and Where the Wild Things Are, among others. Melbourne is also home to the headquarters of Village Roadshow Pictures, Australia's largest film production company. Famous modern day actors from Melbourne include Cate Blanchett, Rachel Griffiths, Olivia Newton-John, Guy Pearce and Eric Bana. Artist Banksy, from the United Kingdom, hailed street art in Melbourne as "[Australia]'s most significant contribution to the arts since the Aborigines' pencils were stolen". The city is often placed alongside New York and Berlin as one of the world's great street art meccas, and its extensive street art-laden laneways, alleys and arcades were voted by Lonely Planet readers as Australia's top cultural attraction. The Melbourne Shuffle is a rave and club dance that originated in the late 1980s in the underground rave music scene in Melbourne, and has since grown in popularity. The city is also admired for its exciting mix of vigorous modern architecture which intersects with an impressive range of nineteenth and early twentieth century buildings.
Housing
Housing in Melbourne is characterised by minimal and lack of public housing and high demand for, and largely unaffordable, rental housing. Public housing is usually provided by the Housing Commission of Victoria and operates within the framework of the Commonwealth-State Housing Agreement, by which funding for public housing is provided by both federal and state governments. At present, Melbourne is experiencing high population growth, generating high demand for housing. This has created a housing boom, pushing housing prices up and having an effect on rental prices as well as availability of all types of housing. Subdivision regularly occurs in the far outer areas of Melbourne with Display homes from numerous developers offering house and land packages.
Culture
Melbourne is an international cultural centre, with cultural endeavours spanning major events and festivals, drama, musicals, comedy, music, art, architecture, literature, film and television. It was the second city after Edinburgh to be named a UNESCO and has thrice shared top position in a survey by The Economist of the world's most livable cities on the basis
of a number of attributes which include its broad cultural offerings. The city celebrates a wide variety of annual cultural events and festivals of all types, including the Melbourne International Arts Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Melbourne Fringe Festival. The Australian Ballet is based in Melbourne, as is the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Melbourne is the second home of Opera Australia after it merged with "Victoria State Opera" in 1996. The Victorian Opera had its inaugural season in 2006 and operates out of various venues in Melbourne. Notable theatres and performance venues include the Victorian Arts Centre (which includes the State Theatre, Hamer Hall, the Playhouse and the Fairfax Studio), Melbourne Recital Centre, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Princess Theatre, Regent Theatre, Forum Theatre, Palace Theatre, Comedy Theatre, Athenaeum Theatre, Her Majesty's Theatre, Capitol Theatre, Palais Theatre and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. There are more than 100 galleries in Melbourne. Most notably it is home to Australias oldest and largest art gallery, the National Gallery of Victoria.
Melbourne is the birthplace of television in Australia, Australian rules football, Australian impressionist art movement known as the Heidelberg School, and Australian contemporary dance (including the Melbourne Shuffle and New Vogue styles). The city has an extensive cinematic history. Indeed, the world's first feature films were produced in Melbourne and its outer suburbs. Limelight Department's 1900 Soldiers of the Cross, the world's first religious epic, anticipated the early 1900s golden age of Melbourne film productionan era marked by the exploration of local history and Australia's emerging identity. The 1854 civil insurrection of Ballarat was brought to life on the screen in Eureka Stockade, and The Story of the Kelly Gang (the world's first feature length narrative film and precedent of the "Bushranging drama" followed the escapades of Ned Kelly and his gang of outlaws. Melbourne filmmakers continued to produce bushranger and convict films, such as 1907's Robbery Under Arms and 1908's For the Term of His Natural Life, up until 1912, when Victorian politicians banned the screening of bushranger films for what they perceived as the promotion of crime. Melbourne's and Australia's film industries declined soon after and came

Now that the Town Car has been discontinued, the 2012 Lincoln MKS takes the spot as Lincoln's largest and most lavish sedan. Through it shares its underpinnings with the mainstream Ford Taurus; the 2012 MKS is a solid full-size luxury sedan. The big Lincoln's styling is distinctive and classy, while the interior is wellappointed and filled with a wide range of features more commonly seen on more expensive offerings hailing from Germany. Both engines, especially the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, are modern and plenty powerful, and all-wheel drive is available for those concerned with
winter traction. Compared to the competition, the MKS isn't the best in the handling department. Although the MKS is front-drive based, this Lincoln largely makes up for its shortcomings with its long-distance cruising ability and overall comfort level. If you expect to be spending a considerable amount of time on the freeway, then the MKS may be just what you're looking for. The Range Body style: Sedan Engines: 3.7L V-6, 3.5L turbocharged V-6 Transmission: 6-speed automatic
Trim levels: MKS, MKS EcoBoost What's New In 2010 the Lincoln MKS gained Ford's then new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 which delivers V-8 like power while retaining V-6 fuel economy. For 2012 the updates are less significant as the MKS gets a few tweaks in the 2013 model year. Lincoln's BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with cross traffic alert is now included in the Navigation and Ultimate package. A new remote start system dubbed The Power Code is available. Four new exterior colors have been added to the paint palette: Cinnamon Metallic, Crystal Champagne Metallic, Dark Blue Pearl Metallic, and Silver Diamond Premium Coat Metallic. Lastly, a Smoker's Pack option includes an ash/coin cup. Exterior The 2012 Lincoln MKS departs from the outgoing Town Car's look by offering a modern interpretation of the large split-wing grille that was inspired by the classic 1941 Lincoln Continental while chrome accents help give it an upscale book. Fender badges complete the look. The MKS rides on a 112.9-inch wheelbase and measures 204.1 inches stem to stern. Overall the MKS is shorter yet taller than the discontinued Town Car. Cinnamon Metallic, Crystal Champagne Metallic, Dark Blue Pearl Metallic and Silver Diamond Premium Coat Metallic join the exterior paint choices for 2012. Interior Ford blessed the MKS with exclusive high-quality interior materials and an array of gadgets, not the least of which are the excellent Lincoln
SYNC system for voice-activated communications and a high-resolution navigation screen. The navigations system includes an internal hard drive for map and point-of-interest information storage. SiriusXM Traffic and SiriusXM Travel Link and THX II Certified 5.1 Surround Audio System are standard. MyKey bush button start and available park assist are among the options. A new remote start system dubbed The Power Code is available. Heated and cooled front seats are standard. Performance & Handling The MKS' base 3.7-liter V-6 makes an adequate 273 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, but the available twinturbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 is substantially more powerful at 355 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, and packs that peak torque over a broad RPM range--1500 to 5250 rpm. We drove the MKS EcoBoost in 2010 and came away impressed on its ability to hit 120 mph without any drama. The EcoBoost is also more fuel-efficient than the lesspowerful naturally-aspirated engine. Safety In addition to seatbelt pretensioners the MKS has a vast array of airbags (including dual front, side, and side curtain) and Safety Canopy system. The MKS is packed with high-tech safety systems like adaptive cruise control, a BLIS blind-spot warning system, tire pressure monitoring system, and AdvanceTrac with RSC roll stability control with gyrospcopic sensors. Rear door child safety locks and an SOS post-crash alert system are also available.

The Fiji Football Association says it will reconsider having overseas players participating at local tournaments in the future. Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel said they needed to seriously look into the matter. Ba soccer team manager Arvin Singh, who was vocal to Times Sport about the issue, said the parent body needed to take action on recruiting overseas players in Fiji. He said recruiting players for tournaments had killed the spirit of the game. He said it was not helping the development of the sport in Fiji. "I do not know why they keep allowing overseas players to come and play here. It is not helping the development of the sport in the country, that is why we are seeing our national team going down every day," Singh said. At the BOG itself, more than nine overseas players are likely to feature depending on the International Transfer Clearance outcome.
Suva and Labasa Football associations preparation for the Ink Mobile Battle of Giants tournament received a boost with sponsorship in cash and kind respectively. The Whites received $5,000 from All Freight Logistics whilst the Babasiga Lions were given free boat passage for their squad and officials by Bligh Waters Shipping services for the Lautoka leg of the BOG tournament from July 26-29. Suva president Mahen Prasad and Labasa secretary Satishwar Chand were pleased with the support saying any backing in any form is always appreciated. As we know costs are very high and with this sponsorship coming in has brought some relief to the association and the amount will go towards buying the necessary sports equipment for the players and also towards their
allowance, Prasad said. In handing over the funding, All Freight Logistics operations and sales executives, Jean- Pierre Lihoreau said, It is just the pride the company has in the Suva team and the fact that the company is based in Suva. We are confident that the Capital City will again bring pride to Suva like they did at the Fiji FACT. About their sponsorship, Labasa secretary, Chand said, We are grateful for Bligh Waters for their generous timely support as they have provided us with 27 return tickets for the squad including the officials. According to Fiji FA chief executive officer Bob Kumar, Lautoka has opted to field four overseas players, Rewa four, Labasa two while Suva and Navua have one each. Singh said it was disappointing to see the poor performance of teams when their overseas players departed. Kumar said only three overseas players would be accommodated for each team at such tournament. "Most teams rely on overseas players to win and this is not helping the development of soccer in the country. The development of soccer is my concern, I think Rajesh and his team should think about this," he said. Patel said while it was positive playing 90 minutes of football, the recruitment of import players was another issue they needed to deal with. "We will seriously look into the matter before we decide on it. If we want our national team to do good in the future then this is something we will need to reconsider," he added.

of my actions. I want to sincerely apologize to our fans, the Winnipeg Jets organization, and to my teammates for any embarrassment this has caused. I'm truly sorry for letting you all down." Pavelec signed a new five-year contract with Jets in June. "The organization was deeply disappointed to learn of this information (Monday) and is fully aware of the seriousness of this matter," the team said in a statement. "We will determine our course of action once we have the chance to meet and discuss with Ondrej in person, which we expect to do at the earliest possible opportunity." Pavelec's sentencing comes a week before Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien is slated to stand trial in Minneapolis on charges including impaired boating.
