AUTOMATION IN POWER PLANTS

Mission
Power plant automation solutions have evolved from stand-alone plant control modules to integrated supervisory and monitoring systems. Management decisions are thus enabled through access to real-time critical plant performance variables including plant availability, grid demand, systems requirements, etc. At the organisational level, governance issues are being addressed through automation in procurement and inventory management, while design and engineering works are being streamlined through advanced modelling techniques. Further, with the increasing diversity of power plant technologies within an operator's portfolio, automation solutions today facilitate decision making across plants at different locations. Some of the key drivers for automation include the need for optimal asset utilisation in the face of increasing competition and uncertainty about fuel availability, regulatory changes, market demand, etc. Meanwhile, automation solutions are gradually evolving through the integration of field devices with plant control systems and enterprise decision modules. This evolution is being facilitated by developments in advanced computing systems and integrated and open source architecture as well as the emergence of new information and communication technologies. The market size has increased with the entry of several new solution providers and due to the widening portfolio of traditional players. Therefore, generation companies can deploy diverse customised solutions provided by different manufacturers and suppliers. At the same time, there are several challenges. To begin with, there is the issue of choosing between in-house technology development and outsourcing the technology to vendors. Also, the transition from legacy systems to new solutions involves operational constraints. Increasing the level of automation requires infrastructural investments in data storage and retrieval. The mission of this conference is to provide an understanding of the current status of power plant automation solutions and their future. The conference will provide plant operators and solution providers a common platform to discuss their experience with current systems and expectations from future solutions. Solution providers will gain a better insight into the evolving business and the operational environment of power plant operators, which will enable them to better match their offerings with customer needs.

Target Audience
The conference is targeted at: - Power generation plants - Power developers - Captive power plant operators - Automation solution providers - Control and instrumentation providers - Testing and certification agencies - IT service providers (hardware and software) - Enterprise solution providers (ERP, etc.) - Communication solution providers - Sector consultants - Etc. Organisers
The conference is being organised by Power Line (the premier magazine for the Indian power sector), which is published by India Infrastructure Publishing, a company dedicated to providing information on the infrastructure sectors through magazines, newsletters, reports and conferences. The group also publishes the Indian Infrastructure, Renewable Watch and Smart Utilites magazines; Power News (a weekly newsletter); and a series of reports on the energy sector including Power in India, Power Equipment in India, Power Generation in India, Coal-based Power Generation in India, Hydro Power in India, Nuclear Power in India and Gas in India. b
