TALE 1 I. Title The Knights Tale

II. Setting A. Place: Athens (Tower that serves as a Prison Cell and Athenian Court) B. Time: Historical Period

King Theseus- King of Athens Queen Hippolyta- sister of Emelye Mars, Diana, Venus, Saturn- Athenian goddesses

IV. Plot A. Introduction The Knights tale is a tale about two knights, Arcite and Palamon, who are captured in a battle and imprisoned in Athens under the rule of King Theseus.

B. Rising Action While imprisoned in a tower, the two knights see Emelye, the sister of Queen Hippolyta and instantly fall in love with her.

C. Climax The two knights fight over Emelye, but their fight is stopped when Theseus find them. Theseus sets the rules for a duel between the two knights for Emelyes affection and each raise an army for a battle a year from that date.

D. Falling Action Before the battle, Arcite prays to Mars for victory in the battle, Emelye prays to Diana that she may marry happily, and Palamon prays to Venus to have Emelye as his wife. All three gods hear their prayers and argue over whose should get precedence, but Saturn decides to meditate.

E. Resolution

During their battle, Arcite indeed is victorious, but as soon as he is crowned victor, he is killed. Before he dies, he reconciles with Palamon and tells him that he deserves to marry Emelye. Palamon and Emelye marry.

TALE 2 I. Title The Clerks Tale

II. Setting A. Place: Italian Province B. Time: Historical Period

III. Character A. Major

Walter- an Italian marquis Griselde- Virtuous woman; wife of Walter

B. Minor Pope- the pope who demands Walter to divorce Griselde

IV. Plot

A. Introduction The Clerks Tale recounts a story about Walter, an Italian marquis who finally decides to take a wife after the people of his province object to his longtime status as a bachelor.

B. Rising Action Walter decides to test her devotion.

C. Climax Walter sends Griselde away from his home. Each of the tragedies, Griselde accepts with great patience.

D. Falling Action Walter soon decides to make amends and sends for his two children.

E. Resolution Walter tells Griselde that he will marry again, and introduces her to the presumed bride, whom he then reveals is their daughter. The family is reunited once more.

TALE 3 I. Title

The Merchants Tale

II. Setting Time: Historical Period

III. Character A. Major


January- an elderly blind knight May- a young and beautiful woman who becomes the wife of January Damian- squire of January

B. Minor

Placebo- brother of January Pluto and Prosperina- gods who returns Januarys sight

IV. Plot A. Introduction The Merchants tale tells a story of January, an elderly blind knight who decides to marry a young woman, despite the objections of his brother, Placebo.

B. Rising Action

January marries the young and beautiful May, who becomes dissatisfied with his sexual attentions to her and decides to have an affair with his squire, Damian, who secretly wooed her by signs and tokens.

C. Climax The gods Pluto and Prosperina come upon Damian and May and Pluto restores Januarys sight so he may see what his wife is doing.

D. Falling Action When January sees what is occurring, May tells him not to believe his eyes-they are recovering from the blindness.

E. Resolution January believes May leading to an on-the-surface happy ending.

TALE 4 I. Title The Squires Tale

II. Setting Place: Court of Tartary Time: Historical Period

III. Character A. Major Mysterious Knight- the knight who gives King Cambyuskan a mechanical horse and gives Canacee a mirror and a ring King Cambyuskan- King of Tartary

B. Minor Canacee- daughter of King Cambysukan

IV. Plot A. Introduction The Squires Tale begins with a mysterious knight arriving at the Court of Tartary.

B. Rising Action Canacee uses the ring given by the mysterious knight to aid a bird who has been rejected in love but the tale abruptly ends.

C. Climax

TALE 5 I. Title The Pardoners Tale

II. Setting Time: Historical Period

III. Character A. Major Three rioters- rioters who search for Death to vanquish him

B. Minor Old Man- man who tells the rioters where to find Death

IV. Plot A. Introduction The Pardoners Tale concerns three rioters who search for Death to vanquish him.

B. Rising Action They find an old man who tells them that they may find Death under a nearby tree, but under this three they only find a large fortune.

C. Climax Two of the rioters send the third inmto the town to purchase food and drink foor the night and when he is gone they plan to murder him. The third rioter poisons the drink, intending to take all of the money for himself.

D. Falling Action When the third rioter returns, the two rioters stab him, then drink the poisoned wine and die themselves.

E. Resolution The three rioters find Death in the form of avarice.
