This is a valley rich in history centred around a picturesque village of friendly, welcoming people. In the village you will find unique crafts, art and antique shops and galleries. Huguenot Street, the aptly named main street, is lined with coffee shops and restaurants. Only 45 minutes from Cape Town Franschhoek is the perfect base for your exploration of the entire Cape Winelands region.

French Heritage
After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in France in 1685, when Protestantism was outlawed, hundreds of so-called Huguenots fled their homeland, 277 of them arriving by ship at the Cape of Good Hope. Many of them were given land by the Dutch colonial government in a valley called Oliphantshoek (Elephants Corner) so named because of the vast herds of elephants that roamed the area. Soon after they settled here, it became known as Franschhoek (French Corner). This heritage lives on today with the Huguenot monument standing proudly at the top of the village. The museum nearby chronicles the history of those brave pioneers, with each of the nine original Huguenot farms having its own fascinating story to tell.

Excellent Wines
Driving into Franschhoek you will notice that most of the farms still bear their original French names and are usually complete with a spectacular Cape Dutch homestead, towering oaks and rolling vineyards. There are a variety of cellars, from small boutique wineries that cater for those in search of something unique, to large cellars that offer organized tours and conducted tastings. Award-winning wines range from plump reds to elegant whites and delicious sparkling wines, or Mthode Cap Classique.

Things to do
For the more energetic there are numerous walks and biking trails in the surrounding mountains. Many farms in the Franschhoek valley offer trout fishing spots in various streams and dams. For a wine tour with a difference hop onto a horse and visit a few of the Vignerons de Franschhoek. However, those in favour of a more sedate excursion might prefer to just drive themselves or engage the services of a local guide to make their visits memorable. In true French spirit Franschhoek is a village that loves a good celebration. If youre in the vicinity in July, try to visit Franschhoek over the weekend closest to Bastille Day (14th July) when the village celebrates its French heritage with a wine and gourmet fair and lots, lots more. Or try the Franschhoek Cap Classique and Champagne Festival in December, or Franschhoek Uncorked in September when the wineries release their new vintages, or any of the other festivals and events that lure visitors with their style and joie-de-vivre.

In times gone by, the families of the valley did quake at the fearsome howling and gnashing that came from the forests at night. They dared not leave the safety of their homes, especially under the pale light of a full moon.

One day, fortified by many a draught of rich red wine, the brave winemakers set off to capture the terrifying wolf. In the heart of the forest, they did set a wolf-trap, and then climbed into the Boekenhout trees to wait.

Many a wondrous beast they saw that night: baboons, leopards, porcupines, even (they say) an elephant; but of the wolf and evermore, though they sometimes heard the howl, they rejoiced, for they had their winemakers back and the trap awaiting. To date, no wolf has ever been found in the Franschhoek Valley, though the trap still waits.
