1 Pumice stones will play an important part of the dying process. Beauty stores, as well as sites like eBay, carry pumice stones.

2 Soak the pumice stones in chlorine. Ask a professional who handles chemicals to inform you of the proper way of handling and disposing of this potent chemical.

3 Load the jeans and the stones into an industrial washer, making sure it is safe for such an endeavor. You also want to be avoid the fumes, and warn others of the same, when acid washing jeans.

4 Check on the jeans after 15 minutes. The typical time it takes is 25 minutes, but you want to check to make sure. You don't want to go too far in either direction with acid washing. Too little can make a fabric look awful, and over-doing it can destroy a great pair of jeans.

5 Keep checking every 10 minutes after that for just the right look.

6 Once the jeans are dyed to perfection, transfer them to another machine, and add "antichlor," sodium bisulfite, to the water they are washed with. Leave them washing for five minutes in this process. This will remove any remaining chlorine.

7 Wash jeans in water for five minutes more to remove any grit from the stones and any possible remaining chlorine.

8 Put the jeans in a high-powered drier until all dry. You now have completed the process of acid washing.

Tips & Warnings

Try on a pair of jeans before and after they are acid washed. You'll find the jeans will likely be more comfortable after the wash, and they will feel more broken in. Ask for the opinion of others when deciding on how much on acid wash look you'd like for your jeans. Never instruct or let a child do this! Beware of all chemicals in your household, and ask your city how to properly dispose of them. Don't try this in a home machine or at a laundry mat. The machines can get seriously damaged by the stones. Make sure it is done in an approved setting. Never use a chemical without thoroughly research the hazards and safety for your personal use.

The Spray Method/Easy Method

Wet your garment in a bathtub or sink. Wring out the excess moisture. Spray on bleach from a squirt bottle in random places. Spray liberally and make sure to leave some spots uncovered. Allow the bleached jeans to sit for a while, 10 minutes is a decent amount of time. But, depending upon the look you want, you may have them soak for shorter or longer. When theyve achieved the look you want, pop them in the washer and run the regular cycle. Voila!

The Pumice Stone Method

You will need to have pumice stone for this process, generally available at beauty stores or online. Again, make sure you have your gloves on. Find a suitable plastic container, place the pumice in and fill container to the top with bleach. You want to make sure the stone is fully covered to saturate the porous pumice. Allow stone to absorb the bleach, it takes 5 minutes tops. Remove the stone and give it a few flicks to remove the excess bleach. Now, youll gently rub the stone over your jeans. You may need to experiment with different methods to find the one you like the most. I used to purposefully create creases and wrinkles, and even wad up the denim a bit while I ran the stone over them. A tidier look will result in just passing the stone over the jeans. This is the look Id be shooting for in 2010, by the way. Let your jeans sit for a while as you watch for the effect youre trying to create.

When they look right to you, place your jeans in some water now to rinse out the bleach. Pop them in the washing machine and thats all she wrote. Now youre ready to rock your new little number (again with caution!!!).

This is the oldest of fashion washes in denim after stone wash. The name acid wash is in reference to the acids used for this wash in old recipes. In new methods it is done with oxidation. Use of bleach/oxidative is very safe and economical in comparison to acids. Different chemicals are used and among them potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and sodium hypochlorite are mainly used. Acid wash is typically done by soaking pumic stone in hypochlorite. Some time KMnO4 is used in replace of bleach. Selection of oxidant is very important and mainly depends on the type of fabric. When it is done with pumice stone the washer and garment should not contain any water. Dry garment is much suitable for this process then a damp one. Pumic stones are soaked in bleach and left it to open for little time so they get only damp rather than wet. Then they are processed in machine with garments. The extent of effect is controlled with process time, concentration of oxidant solution and quantitative ratio of garment to stone. In some derivatives of this process cotton balls or cotton ribbons are used instead of pumic stone. The impact of cotton is very different form pumic stone. It produces more merged and cloudy effect. Cotton ball of cotton ribbon is more successful on damp rather dry garment. Again the concentration of oxidative solution, time of process and quantity of garments measures the effect. Cotton towels are some time used for this effect to produce more cloudy patterns on garment. Garment must be stone washed before going for acid wash. It is more prominent and uniform on medium stone wash than dark or light washes. KMnO4 cannot be used with cotton balls/ribbons. It is only possible with hypochlorite. Black sulfur is not process able with hypochlorite as sulfur reacts vigorously with sulfur and pace of process cannot be controlled. One important thing about acid wash is that the process is without water so the effect will be more random and variation will to a larger extent than regular washes. So by keeping the batch size minimum this variation can be controlled. The simple relation is larger is the batch size greater is the variation in result General Recipe Steps
