Hunger Games Scavenger Hunt

Objective: Orient incoming freshman with Smith Library resources and layout Materials Box for reaping/drawing of teams Sponsor Gifts for task completion (6 stickers per team (new stickers for each group36 stickers per session; 8 sessions = 288 stickers) Mission Sheets (gives mission order/instructions and for collecting stickers) Cornucopia (poster with mission sheets for group collection) Nerf bow and arrow and target (for weapon practice) Mission supervisors (7 totalone for starting point; six for mission areas) Prizesone grand prize per group and consolation prizes (temporary tattoos, something thats already HPU branded)

Overall Process 1. Students will meet in computer lab downstairs to receive instructions and draw teams from reaping boxthere will be 6 groups of 4-5 students 2. Students will gather into their assigned groups 3. Before step four, students will be given ground rules: i. Dont complete missions out of order ii. Make sure you collect the sponsor gift (sticker) from the area supervisor (sponsor) for each mission iii. If another group is at a mission area when you arrive, wait patiently for that group to finish iv. Teams must stay together! v. There will be an area supervisor (sponsor) in each area to help if you need it vi. There is a total 30 minute time limit to finish all missions and return to the computer lab 4. Groups will send one representative to collect their groups Mission Checklist from cornucopiaeach group will be instructed to start at one of the six missions: i. Do Your Research- students will be instructed to find a particular book using the computer catalog (any computer); the book will contain the token/sticker (sponsor gift) for mission completion Script for Mission Slip: You need to find a particular book to help you survive! Use the computer catalog to locate (book title). After you find the book, bring it to the area supervisor where you searched for the book in the catalog. If you found the correct book, the supervisor will give you the sponsor gift. Find a Friend - students will be instructed to Friend HPU libraries on Facebook so they can chat with a reference librarian; the ref. librarian will give each team a unique code to give to the mission area supervisor for the gift from their sponsor. Teams will then bring the DVD to the circulation desk and check it out to receive the sponsor gift. Script for Mission Slip: When youre done studying you need a way to relax. Once your team is in the DVD collection area look for a movie youd like to see in the (Genres: Action and Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Horror and Suspense, Mystery, or Romance genre). Take the DVD cover to the circulation desk (across from the reference desk on the second floor) to check out your movie and get the gift from your sponsor. 5. After completing each mission, students will be instructed by their Mission Checklists to return to the computer lab. Whichever team returns to the starting point first wins!

Take turns trying to hit the target and once you are successful the mission area supervisor will award you with the gift from your sponsor.

Mission Area Title: Find Shelter Mission Area: Break Room What you need to do: : When a team arrives to the break room, give them the appropriate instruction card Make sure each cup has a different color sticker in it; make sure there are several cups that students have to search through. Team 6, Mission 1- Find Entertainment When youre done studying you need a way to relax. Find the librarys DVD collection and look for a movie youd like to see in the Romance genre. Take the DVD cover to the circulation desk (across from the reference desk on the second floor) to check out your movie and get the gift from your sponsor. Team 6, Mission 2- Do Your Research You need to find a particular book to help you survive! Use the computer catalog to locate The Essential Wilderness Navigator. After you find the book, bring it to the area supervisor where you searched for the book in the catalog. If you found the correct book, the supervisor will give you the sponsor gift. Team 6, Mission 3- Practice Your Aim Sometimes you need to meet with a group to reach a target. Check you aiming skills! Take turns trying to hit the target and once you are successful the mission area supervisor will award you with the gift from your sponsor. Team 6, Mission 4- Find Shelter Studying in the library can be hard work! Find the librarys break room and your teams cup to refuel with the gift from your sponsor. Team 6, Mission 5- Find a Friend Facebook and Twitter can be used for more than just keeping in touch with your grandma and reading about what a Kardashian had for breakfast. Stay up-to-date with whats going on at HPU libraries, and use our Chat Reference service. To do this, you should friend Ask Hpulibrary on Facebook, and chat with the online librarian to receive your teams unique code (HINT: You can chat through Facebook or the chat box on the HPU Library Homepage). Once in a chat session, give your team number and color to receive a special code. Give the code to the mission area supervisor in the Media Services Lab and receive the gift from your sponsor. Team 6, Mission 6- Find Safety There is a place in the library where you can always go for help. The librarians at the reference desk are there to help you find resources for your research papers, but they can also help you with other library needs! Ask the librarian at the reference desk, Is there a quiet place where I can study? to get the gift from your sponsor.
