DEARBORN HEIGHTS When voters go to the polls in the Aug. 7 primary, theyll see two very familiar names vying for the Wayne County Commission 8th District seat. Only one, though, will be running in the Nov. 6 general election. Incumbent Diane Webb will be running against term-limited

state Rep. Bob Constan for the Democratic nomination; the winner will face Republican Mark Cochran, who is unopposed, in November. The 8th District also includes Redford Township and part of Livonia. Its one of several items city voters will see in the primary. The top Republican and the top Democrat will advance in each race; in nonpartisan races, twice the number

of candidates than available seats will advance. Voters can only cast ballots for Democrats or Republicans in the primary. Ballots that have votes for both parties will not be counted. The others ballot items are:

Federal government
Senate: Incumbent Debbie Stabenow is the lone Democrat; shes being challenged for the

six-year seat by Republicans Clark Durant, Gary Glenn, Randy Hekman and Pete Hoekstra. House of Representatives: Districts were redrawn based on the 2010 census, though the city still will be served by two districts. Almost all of the city was placed in the 13th District, where longtime incumbent John Conyers of Detroit, who had not been reprePLEASE SEE PRIMARY/4-A

Dearborn resident Bob Fryz has owned the ame-throwing customized 1951 Ford for 15 years, and he will be displaying the car during this weekends Telegraph Cruise.

Sh boom!
Sometimes that means you have to think out of the box. Another place cool use of hub caps can be found is on the headlight rings of the cars, which were made from the hub caps of a 1959 Chrysler Imperial. The cars front bumper was adapted from a 1955 Cadillac. To make the bumper fit the car, it had to be cut in half, shortened, and

DEARBORN HEIGHTS/ DEARBORN Sh Boom: about anyone who has ever cruised Telegraph, or any other car event in Southeast Michigan, knows this name. In case you are one of the few who dont, Sh, Boom is a customized blueflamed, white 1951 Ford

with two larger-than-life flame throwers owned by Dearborn resident Bob Fryz. Fryz has owned Sh Boom for 15 years and has redone the car more than once, including changes to the body, paint and the addition to bigger and better flame throwers. After the large rearmounted flame throwers, the next thing that draws

stares is the cars front hub caps. Fryz said the inspiration for the hub caps came from the movies Grease and Ben Hur. The hub caps are actually made from many different hub caps including a 1957 Oldsmobile, a semi, a Harley, and with the points being rare original Shannon Cones. I like to make cool things, said Fryz.

then welded back together. A close eye will notice the changes were made to make to the hood so it and the bumper splash pan line up perfectly. Sh Boom is not Fryzs first car. He has been involved with cars since the 1960s, when he used to drag race at Detroit Dragway and cruise Telegraph.

DEARBORN HEIGHTS Crestwood High School has gone green, and its due in large part to the effort of two of its students. Ahmad Awada, a junior, and Aymen Maktari, a senior, are in charge of overseeing the planting and upkeep of one of the schools courtyards. What once contained bushes and weeds too tall to walk through is now home to a solar-powered pond and a multi-purpose weather station, among other things. My sophomore year two years ago, we created the pond, Maktari said. We wanted to make the school more green. Almost everything planted in the courtyard is native to Michigan, Awada explained, and theres a beehive to attract honeybees. Other attractions include a patriotic-themed flower bed, blueberry bushes and a composter to recycle plant waste.
