Lesson Plan STARHUB-CENTRAL SINGAPORE NURTURE PROGRAMME NURTUREPLUS LESSON 13: COMPOUND WORDS Part 1 Duration 10 minutes Lesson

READING FLUENCY Objective: To check / monitor students progress in reading 1. Teacher recaps previous lesson taught and get student response. 2. Ask each student to read the book aloud and check reading of each student. While student reads: 1. Teacher corrects any mistakes made. 2. Students write down words not read correctly in their worksheet. 3. While teacher is assessing a particular student, the rest will read on their own while waiting for their turn. Materials Reading Material: Own PM+ Level books for each group (depends on proficiency level of each student group) 1 set for teacher, 1 for pupil Student Worksheet: Lesson 13

WORD STUDY Objective: Students will learn what compound words are and how to form them. 1. Whiteboard / Flip chart (to explain as a large group)

/ Small magnetic Show 3 pictures of objects that are made boards (to explain in small groups) up of compound words (basketball, snowman, watermelon) and ask Teacher Resource: students to name them. (make sure students fully understand that a new word is formed from the 2 small words) 6. Give students 3 words; rain, eye and sun and ask them to form as many compound words as they can with the given 1st words. (answers found in Teacher Resource) 7. Check and correct student work and reward students who give the most answers.

INSTRUCTIONAL READING Objective: Students will get to interact with the text by playing the role of the main characters in the story and repair / renew an object that is old / broken / destroyed to look all new. Before reading: 1. Pass the books to students. 2. Engage student interest by asking them to guess what the story is about by looking at the title. 3. Guide student response. Reading: 1. Make students read books in their own groups. 2. Engage student by asking them to focus on the objects mentioned in the story (carnival horse, bicycle and flower pot) 3. Ask students to write down new / difficult words from their books into their worksheet. After reading: 1. Ask students to imagine being the characters who came across the broken

GAMES Objective: Students will reinforce their understanding in topics taught (in this lesson or previous) by engaging in a simple game. 1. Give out the word and picture cards to the students. 2. Ask students to come up with as many compound words from the given word and picture cards. 3. Time the students (10 minutes). 4. Check student work and reward any student who finishes first and gives the correct answers.

WRITING Objective: Students will improve writing fluency 1. Review the compound words learnt in the lesson. 2. Encourage students to write as many compound words as they can remember from the words they have seen or read. 3.
