Cereal System Initiative for South Asia (CSISA) A Brief

The Cereal System initiative for South Asia (CSISA) comes at a crucial time for key nations in the region home to 40 percent of the worlds poor with nearly half a billion people subsisting on less than US$1 a day as they struggle to boost grain supplies in the wake of growing demand and strained natural resources. The initiative will bring together a range of public and private sector organizations to enable sustainable cereal production in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) will partner with IRRI, national agricultural research organizations, education and extension systems, non government organizations, and private sector companies to implement CSISA. CSISA aims to be reverse the declines in annual cereal yield growth of recent years, alleviate hunger and malnutrition ( almost half the regions children under five year are malnourished), and increase food and income security in South Asia through the accelerated development and development of new cereal varieties, sustainable cropping systems management practices and agricultural policies. CSISA is having many components for the improvement in productivity of Cereal system in all aspects. Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) is one the components of CSISA for developing a team of professionals for guiding the farmers for improving crop productivity, profitability and environmental quality.

Certified Crop Adviser Program

The certified crop advisor is a professional certification program of the American society of Agronomy for the extension workers, agronomists, crop experts, specialist, consultants and other practitioners of the public and private organizations. Basic requirement for this certification is a degree in agriculture B.Sc. (Ag.) with two years experience of working with the farmers. It is a voluntary program in which the base level of competency is the clearance of examination based on performance objectives prepared by the help of experts on nutrient management, soil and water management, integrated pest management and crop management. Crop advisors will maintain that competency by updating their knowledge by getting the renewal of certification every two or three years. These crop advisors will work as the professionals in advising and counseling the farmers and the other agriculture entities for improving the productivity. Goal: The overall goal of the CCA program is to build a network of professional agronomists that foster close working relationships between the different segments that serve and support agricultural production. Project objectives : 1. To develop a team of professional highly qualified people for the public and private organizations. The highly qualified professionals will work as the solution provider for the farmers which will ultimately help in improving the productivity. To develop a continuous education program on latest technology for updating the Certified crop advisors after every two or three years. Implementation of the CCA program as a voluntary, self sustained program by establishing a baseline of competency through examinations.
