History: Martha Wayne was very young when she met and fell in love with the
much older Thomas Wayne. She was completely unprepared for the horror of his and
their son's death some 8 years later. Martha secretly blamed the super-heroes of the
Golden Age for the rise in crime in Gotham City, especially since they all seemed to
have retired after the war. When Martha learned that her good friend Ted Grant was
secretly Wildcat, she coerced him and Alan (Green Lantern) Scott into training her to
become the first of a new breed of super-hero.
As the Batwoman, Martha fought to protect the city from the vile Harley Quinn,
but she also served as an example for others. Soon more super-heroes began to appear
and the government was forced to recognize all of them and legislation that prohibited
super-hero activities was rescinded. Batwoman was asked to join the government-
sponsored Justice League of America and she served as a mentor to young Barbara
Gordon, alias Robin the Teen Wonder.
Batwoman's greatest ally though was Supergirl, the former Soviet hero Red
October. Together they formed the “World's Finest Team” and worked to promote
democracy throughout the world. Their friendship was brief; after only a few years the
two joined the Justice League on an emergency mission to Moscow to stop Doomsday.
Supergirl was killed and Batwoman was exposed to a serious amount of radiation.
Soon afterwards, Batwoman discovered that Harley Quinn was the one
responsible for the murders of Thomas and Bruce Wayne. Thomas Wayne had gotten
Harley pregnant when she was an intern, but married Martha instead, which drove the
young woman over the edge. Batwoman secured Harley's incarceration in Arkham
Asylum and then retired from being Batwoman to help raise her granddaughter.
Within a few years she developed breats cancer from the radiation exposure
and died in her home.

Powers: Batwoman possessed no super-human powers, but was an above-

average athlete and gymnast. She also had some skill as a detective, most of which she
learned from Ted Grant and Alan Scott. Her greatest resource, though, was the Wayne
Fortune, which was estimated at some 25 million dollars in the mid-1950's.

Weapons: Batwoman possessed a wide variety of gadgets and weapons, all

designed by Alan Scott. Most formidable was her batarang, and original hand-thrown
weapon made of Nth metal, the same material that allowed Hawkman to fly. Batwoman
also had several Batmobiles to choose from over the years.
Batwoman's costumes were made of a bullet-resistant material that may have
been the precursor of Kevlar.
