Everyday Items That Can Be Poisonous

Medications that should never be given : Acetaminophen (Tylenol) - 1 tablet can be fatal to an adult cat. Benzyl alcohol Chlorinated hydrocarbons Phenytoin (dilantin) - often used for seizures in humans and other species. Antihistamines Prescription anticoagulants. - fatal, your pet could bleed to death.

Medications that can be given in some cats under medical supervision : Baby Aspirin (or 1/4 regular tablet) but never more than one baby aspirin in 3 days. Chloramphenicol - generally safe at doses of less than 50 mg twice a day. Tetracycline - may cause fever, diarrhoea, depression. Poisonous Chemical Substances Ant poisons, weed killers and insecticides. Commercial paints, linoleum, batteries. Antifreeze in cars is 'good tasting' to your pet, but highly toxic to most animals. Petroleum products - gasoline, kerosene, turpentine. Household cleaners - drain decloggers, commercial solvents. Pine-oil products are very toxic and should be voided or rinsed thoroughly (bleach is a better alternative). Floor cleaners, phenyl (phenol) in particular, should be avoided as it will stick on the cat's paws and be licked off during grooming. Foods Chocolate contains theobromine, which is is toxic to cats. The darker and more bitter the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains. Caffeine can cause problems for your cat. Do not feed it coffee, aerated drinks or other foods containing caffeine. Non-poisonous Plants

What you have to remember is that with plants, what may not be non-poisonous to some cats may be poisonous to others. You should always make it a point to observe your cat when he/she munches on a plant for the first time to ensure there are no negative reactions. Any plant material ingested by your feline friend may produce symptoms including vomiting, depression, or diarrhoea. These symptoms in most cases are generally mild and self-limiting. As a precaution however (especially when you do not know what your feline friend has ingested) immediately consult your vet and if possible take a sample of the plant ingested for verification. The following list contains plants that have not been reported as being toxic. 1. As a general rule anything with square stems (in cross-section) and opposite leaves should be ok. These features are the hallmark of the mint family, including catnip and nepeta. 2. All members of the African violet family (gesneriaceae) 3. Miniature roses 4. Sweet potatoes 5. Shrimp plant 6. Tulips 7. Boston fern, nephrolepis, Victorian table fern. 8. Common geranium, pelargonium
