BASE 3-4 DEFENSE

Position ENDS LOLB LILB and RILB ROLB LCB and RCB FS Notes

Description

Line up on outside, of the last man on the LOS, play outside of block, then come inside to play. Must loop around the end for containment, do not straight charge. Contain outside of the TE at the line . Contain inside, fill gaps. Contain outside the LOS. Contain from sideline to hash mark. Fill any gaps and contain each half of the field.

BLOOD BLITZ

Position ENDS NG LILB and RILB LOLB and ROLB LCB and RCB FS

Description

Line head up on the end man, on the line, crash hard inside. Line up on Guard, read eyes, crash toward the play. Shift to the line, loop into the backfield. Crash hard up middle, read RB, crash into the side of the play. Shift to the line, straight charge into the backfield Sprint left or right and pick up WR, last line of Defense. Must protect against the sweep.

CORNER BLITZ

Position ENDS NG LBs LCB and RCB FS Notes

Description

Loop in, protect outside. Line up outside of the offensive line. Work inside, get off the blocks. Must protect against sweep but also against the short pass. Shift to WR, take inside man, FS will pick up deep man. When play is set, shift to the line, charge toward QB at snap, must take out the QB or destroy any lead blocks so the LB can make the play. Must protect sweep, and long pass. Last line of defense, pick up outside WR.

FREE SAFETY BLITZ

Position ENDS NG LBs CBs FS Notes

Description

Loop in protect outside. Work inside, read RB, QB to get to play. Protect against rush inside, and must work to sidelines. Protect against short pass and sweeps. On snap, drop in to coverage zone, read pass, then run. When ball is set, time blitz so that you hit the line on the snap. Charge the QB.

Description Loop to protect outside. Work inside, get off blocks, read RB and QB to get to play. Protect inside against rush. Take inside RECEIVER. on your side, if one, or cover the back that comes out on your side. Pick up TE. Pick up outside RECEIVER on your side. Drop back and protect middle.

STRONG SIDE BLITZ

Position ENDS

Description

Line up on outside man, work outside of block, loop back to play. NG Work inside, get off the blocks. STRONG SIDE Will declare to the tight side, so if the TE is on the Offensive right. The defensive left LB is the strong side. Shift to line away from the blocker, charge in hard inside. ILB Will shift only to the side of the blitz. Both LB will shift over gaps. OLB Away from blitz, will have to contain from tackle to outside. CB Contain from LB to side line.

WEAK SIDE BLITZ

Description

Line up on outside man, work outside of block, loop back to play must loop for contain. Work inside, get off the blocks. Linebacker opposite away from the TE, shift to line away from closest blocker, charge hard inside. Will shift only to side of blitz, both backers will shift over one gap. Away from blitz, will have to contain from G to TE. Contain from LB to sideline. Each must cover half of the field.

3-4 DEFENSIVE PLAYBOOK

The 3-4 Defense is a Linebackers dream. The 3-4 Defense is also a great over all defense. For the 3-4 defense to work well, it is a must that the team be a very quick, physical team. The team will have to be very quick mentally as well. KEY POSITIONS All position are very important. You cannot afford a weak link. LBOutsider- must be very quick and smart, must be able to read QB and RBs, must be very physical and able to get off blocks. MLBMust have legs of stone, this player will work against the heaviest on the opposition, must be able to work off blocks, and keep low center of gravity. Height is a disadvantage, the lower the better. This player will work inside between G and T. Very rough, very physical, must over come size, with speed and strength. DEF. ENDLine up on outside lineman, must beat man at snap. Work outside and loop back in. Must read play and block, must be able to adjust at line after proper read. Will always be outside, but can cut in at line for inside run. Play to same side if play is away from side, always loop. Must contain outside for reverse. DEF. TACKLEMust be very physical and smart, must shift after Offense sets. Must read Offense. Must be able to contain inside G to G. Will work inside always. Must have size and strength. Players must be able to stay on feet and keep movement. This will allow LB to come in for the tackle. This players job is to plug holes that will allow for LB to make tackles. This player does not have to have great tackling ability, but must be willing to get dirty. CBBoth Corners contain from outside LB to side of line for run. Must read play and be strong for run. Can shift at start of play to get strong side corner to Offense front. Each CB needs to be quick, strong and very smart. Will lead on tackles, take on block if necessary for safety to make play. Watch pass first, then run. In pass play must call out man to LB and Safety. FSSMust watch pass and protect run. Must know direction of play. Must play to side of pass, will pick up man coverage. FS that is away from play will pick up deep coverage. Is the last line of Defense, must listen to CB for coverage and read play.
