Three basic LOOKUP functions and INDEX and CHOOSE and MATCH:
Most common because most lookup tables like tax tables and price tables are orientated vertically
Most tables are vertical, not horizontal, so using HLOOKUP is rare.
Although LOOKUP was one of the first functions in a spreadsheet, the VLOOKUP can do almost everything that
the LOOKUP does and more. The one thing that the LOOKUP can do that the VLOOKUP (or HLOOKUP) can't do is
retrieve a value to the left or above a lookup_value column or row; it can also have a column and a row area.
LOOKUP function must have the lookup_vector sorted in ascending order. LOOKUP looks up the greatest value
that does not exceed a specified value anywhere in a table or range .
Good when you have more than one table to look values up in. (non-contiguous ranges must be in parenthesis
and stored all on the same worksheet). You can also have a table with intersection lookup values where INDEX
and MATCH can be used together to look up labels and return intersection of two labels. Also can be used as a
replacement for VLOOKUP when the data you want to retrieve is to the left of the lookup column. INDEX and
MATH together have many uses, as we will see...
CHOOSE can return a value or a range from a list of 1 to 254 arguments.
This function tells you the ordinal position of an item in a list

Using named ranges for lookup table is usually efficient

(highlight range, click in Name Box, type name, hit Enter). Using
Data Validation List helps the accuracy of your task (Alt + D + L is
keyboard shortcut).
COLUMNS function tells you how many columns there are in a
range.

LOOKUP function was the first lookup function. It was in VisiCalc in 1979.
LOOKUP function can do vertical lookup (array argument has more rows than columns), horizontal lookup (array argum
columns than rows) or lookup where the lookup column (lookup_vector) and the "values to retrieve column" (result_
different locations.
LOOKUP function must have the lookup_vector (1st column for vertical lookup, 1st row for horizontal lookup, or lookup_
ascending order (smallest to biggest).
When doing a vertical lookup, LOOKUP always retrieves a value from the last column. When doing a horizontal lookup, L
retrieves a value from the last row.
LOOKUP only does "approximate match". What it says in help: "LOOKUP looks up the greatest value that does not exce
value anywhere in a table or range."
There are two ways to think about how it works:
1) The LOOKUP finds the biggest value that is greater than or equal to the lookup_value
2) The LOOKUP takes the lookup_value in its memory and looks until it sees a value bigger than the lookup_value, then i
the previous row/column and uses the data from that row/column
If the first value in the lookup_vector (1st column for vertical lookup, 1st row for horizontal lookup, or lookup_vector) is
lookup_value, then LOOKUP returns #N/A (Not Available).

The MATCH function looks up a value and tells you what relative position it is
in the list.
MATCH(lookup_value,lookup_array,match_type)
If match_type is 1, MATCH finds the largest value that is less than or equal to
lookup_value. Lookup_array must be placed in ascending order: ...-2, -1, 0, 1,
2, ..., A-Z, FALSE, TRUE.
If match_type is 0, MATCH finds the first value that is exactly equal to
lookup_value. Lookup_array can be in any order.
If match_type is -1, MATCH finds the smallest value that is greater than or
equal to lookup_value. Lookup_array must be placed in descending order:
TRUE, FALSE, Z-A, ...2, 1, 0, -1, -2, ..., and so on.
If match_type is omitted, it is assumed to be 1.

INDEX has 2 different uses: 1) look up a value that is at the intersection of a row and
column, or 2) look up a specific table and then within that specific table look up a value that

array is a range of cells or an array constant

column_num says what column to go to do the lookup
Two-Way Lookup: you tell it the table, the row number and column number and it will

The ROW function tells you what row you are in
The ROWS function tells you how many rows there are
The COLUMN function tells you what column you are in
The COLUMNS function tells you how many columns there are
THE SMALL function delivers the kth smallest value. SMALL(array,1) yields
minimum value, SMALL(array,2) yields 2nd smallest value. In our example the
SMALL looks at all the rows with the 2 criteria and in the first row it takes the
smallest row number, then as we copy the formula down to the 2nd row, it tales
the second smallest row number to get the second record that matches our
criteria, etc...

Excel Magic Trick #5: Data Valida

Various Excel IF function Tricks

COUNTIFS allows us to count the number of records that match our 2 criteria. It
gets a TRUE or FALSE for each of our two columns and only when there is a TRUE
in both columns, will it count that record. The SUMPRODUCT formula does the
same thing, but uses TRUE / FALSE Boolean logic and then a double negative to
convert the TRUEs and FALSEs to 1s and 0s.
