1 The Fast Video Cataloger User Interface

1.1 Videos List Pane

The purpose of the Videos on Catalog is to give you an easy to navigate overview of all your videos. Every video in the currently opened Catalog is listed in alphabetic order and represented by Name, Preview image and Length. Clicking a video brings forward details in the Video Detail Pane. Double clicking a video plays it from start in the Video Player Pane. Clicking with your right mouse button presents a context menu with actions on the video where you may play or edit that video in an external player or video editing software, remove the video from the catalog or open the folder where the video file is.

1.2 Video Details Pane

The purpose of the Video Details Pane is to display detailed information about each video. The program automatically captures video frames to represent the video. You can add more video frames by using the capture button while playing/pausing a video. You can add and remove video frames to find the best representation of a video. Clicking a video frame will start playing from that frame in the Video Player Pane. Right mouse button click on a video frame shows a menu for using the clicked frame as either the preview thumbnail for the entire video or as a cast thumbnail for an actor. On the right in the details pane you can see a number of vertical buttons to

open additional panes. Click the button to open the pane and click it again to close the pane.

1.2.1 Details
The details pane has text information about the video such as Description, Tags and Title is displayed and editable here. You can use all this information in searches.

1.2.2 Actions
The action pane contains buttons for actions you can perform on the video. You can for example play the video in and external program, edit the video in an external program, remove the video from the catalog ( the video file is not deleted from disk) or open the folder where the video file is.

1.2.3 Keywording
In the keywording pane you can assign keyword to either the whole video or the one or more scenes in the video. If no video scenes are selected your keywords will be assigned to the whole video. If one or more scenes are selected you will edit the keywords for the selected scenes. So select a scene click on the time text below the scene thumbnail. To selected more videos or deselect a scene hold down the ctrl key while clicking.

1.2.4 Cast
In the cast pane you can view and edit actors in the video.

1.3 Video Player Pane

The purpose of the Video Player Pane is to play videos and capture video frames to be added as video frames in the Detailed Video Pane. You may increase the player pane by grabbing and dragging the upper gray border upwards or clicking the Maximize button. Clicking and holding the player bar will display the time of the video. This is not intended to replace your favorite external player, you can still use that player together with Fast Video Cataloger.

1.4 Adding Videos

Via the Add video files window under the Add Videos button in the Add video tab you can add videos to you catalog. You can add entire folders with subfolders included or you can choose to add only one video. There is no risk for duplicates since this is taken care of by the software. It is often an excellent idea to add details about the videos that you add directly, especially if you have many videos sharing the same details.

1.5 Finding Videos

Finding the videos you are looking for should be easy; it is one of the strong points in Fast Video Cataloger. Via the Filter dropdown tool you can filter the videos displayed on your own tags, your added actors, genre, rating, filenames, title, description, file path or associated link. The sorting options on number, Title or Length accessible through clicking the headlines suites some situations. You also have an exceptionally clear visual overview via the Video Frames for each video showing in the Video Details Pane when you browse through your videos.

Program Documentation Fast Video Cataloger

3.1.1 Adding one file at a time

Press the Add File and locate the video on your folders/sub-folders and Add individual video files to your catalog.

3.1.2 Adding multiple files

Press the Add Folder and locate your video folder. This adds folders and sub-folder with videos in it. If you have files other than videos, no worries, the program only detects video files in that folder. Great if you have everything in one top folder and want a catalog for everything.

3.1.3 Adding selected files

Use the Select folders window and browse to your vide catalog you wish to add. Press the Add from selected button.

3.1.4 Drag and Drop

All the methods above bring the files into the Video Files to be added list. This list opens for a fourth method, which is Drag and Drop. Simply drag your file into this list and drop it. Once you press OK the automatic process of indexing the video files begin.

3.1.5 Details on the videos you add

To the right of the Video Files to be added list you find the interface for adding details to all the files inside the list of files to be added. This is perfect if you know that all share the same details, for example, are videos about Santa Claus. You can add details later, as well.

Details will help you find your videos in your catalog when working. All details have their own filter options.

Tags- Assign tags to your videos. Write new tags directly in the dropdown or

choose one you made earlier. Genre List- Assigning Genre's to your videos can help you identify and categorize each video to a specific genre. You could choose for a variety of genre for i.e. Animation, Drama, Action, Comedy, etc. Ratings List - Rate your videos to 1-5. Link You can associate a link for your video. Example; where you have used the video. Add Actor - You can add several actors to your videos, marking and assigning them to the list you have categorized.

3.2 How to Search and Filter my Video Catalog

There are multiple ways of finding the video or scene inside a video that you look for. You can use the filter dropdown based on the details you have added on the videos, you can sort the Video list or you can visually look at the video frames overview for each video. The thumbnail images in the Preview column become as large as the width of that column.

Program Documentation Fast Video Cataloger

The Filter Options (See image below) lets you filter out videos on a tag you have added as details. For example, choosing your Santa Claus tag in the filtering drop down will show the list of videos based on the tag. You will find there are three advanced filters at your service, Content filter, Tag filter and Cast filter. You activate these filters by choosing them in the filter drop down. You can only use one of the advanced filters at a time. The one you click Use filter on is the one that is used on your catalog.

In the images below you have the three filter windows lined up in a row for you to get a complete overview. Note that you navigate between these filters either by the filter dropdown or the tabs at the top of the window.

3.2.1 Filter Videos on Content [Content filter]

Allow you to filter out videos based on more details. You may filter on a keyword from the title or a text from the description, etc. Text in multiple fields helps you make the filter broader than in only one field, so that you get more videos. Using the Genre and Rating filtering options narrows the filter

In the example in the image above all videos with the word summer in the title, will be shown Video List Pane, together with all the videos that have 2010 in their file path.

3.2.2 Filter on Keywords [Keyword filter]

This filter allows you to filter on multiple keywords (Tags). Move the keywords into the filter with the arrows in the interface. In the example in the image above all the videos with keyword kicks will be shown in the Video List Pane. The list will also include videos that include single scenes tagged with your keyword.

3.2.3 Filter on Actors [Cast filter]

This filter lets you filter out videos with your favorite actor or actors. Click Select Actor and choose from the actors you have added into your catalog. In the example in the image above all videos with actor Eva Mendez added as details will be shown in the Video List Pane.

3.3 How to manage details on your videos

There are three types of details you can add to a video and you find them in the Video Details Pane when selecting a video. Remember that all the details can be used for filtering later when you work with the catalog. Video frames These represent the video visually and is perfect for getting a quick overview of a video. Details This is Text information about the video such as description, Title and Tags. Cast Actors that are in the cast of the video

There are three tabs where you can view and add details for each video. The tabs are shown in the image below, lined up in a row for you to get a clear overview. Note that you navigate freely between these tabs and you never need to click any save button.

3.3.3 Cast
Here, you find all the actors you have added to a video. You can remove actors or add actors from the already created ones using the buttons at the lower end. The best way of creating and adding actors to a video at the same time is by right clicking a Video frame in the Video Frames tab and selecting the option Use for new actor portrait.

3.4 How to Create Actors/Cast and Associate them to Videos

Creating new actors are straightforward and can be done in two ways but ending up with the same result. The most common way to create an actor is to find a suitable video frame to use as an actor portrait, right click and then choose Use for new actor portrait

This way will also associate your actor to the video where the video frame was captured. If you wish to create actors and associate them later you may use the Cast menu and choose New Actor. You can also use the shortcut CTRL + Q.

3.6 How to create a new Catalog

Creating a Project Catalog starts here, choose a location on your disk where you want the catalogs to be stored. i.e. D:/FVC_catalogs/fvclog.vcat.

Select a location where you want to put your Catalog file. The catalog file helps you organize and locate the file for further, future reference. Name the catalog file to whatever you want, and set it to a new folder or which folder you prefer. May we suggest creating a new folder, so you could store your entire FVC catalog files in for easy access and future reference. Quick note: It is possible to move the catalog file after it has been created and populated. Before moving the catalog file, make sure you do not have files in your indexing queue. Close the program Move the file Start program and select "open" to find the file

Moving the project file is useful if you want to archive/backup the catalog file to an external device or just share your catalogs with other users.

3.7 Hints and Tips in your everyday work

Put details on your videos in a structured manner. This will help you in your work in the long run. It allows you to filter and search videos highly efficient. Tag scenes as well as whole videos Filters are always wild carded at the end, i.e. write a in the Title filter and you are filtering everything containing an a somewhere in the title. o [a-c] match all characters from a to c. For example to get all videos starting with a, b or c enter this expression

o [a-c]. 200[0-3] would match strings starting with 2000, 2001, 2002 or 2003. When using secondary drives, make sure always to use the same drive letter for storing your catalog files. In cases of a forgotten file or misplaced file, try searching it first on your windows search bar. The program will start with the last project that was loaded. Fine tune the preferences to fit your videos when starting to add videos. Sometimes the first few frames are black or uninteresting in the original video; its a good idea to skip them. When using the filtering options a lot you do not have to close the popup window. Keep it open on the side to have fast access to filtering. After you have pressed a button, for example Play, Capture or Maximize. The "space bar" on your keyboard can be used to click again on the same button. o For example, after you have pressed the Capture button, you could do capture again by tapping the "space bar".

3.8 How to change the preferences for the software

Preferences Window will help you set the settings for the program. You find on the File Menu Bar. Use the Shortcut Ctrl+P.

General tab - lets you choose an External Video Player and Editor. Video Indexer tab - Configure the screenshots and thumbnails to be saved. Video Player tab - Video Start offset and what's the best video player to use.

3.8.1 General tab

This tab lets you choose what external media player you want to use to play the videos on your catalog or use as a video editor. The default player is windows media player and can be changed to a desired player of choosing for i.e. VLC, QuickTime, real time, DivX etc. You can associate a video editor for cataloger. You can edit your videos on an external video editor and still play it on the cataloger.

3.8.2 The Video Indexer Tab

The indexer tab is a unique feature of FVC. You can set the rate for i.e. Save screenshot after: x seconds, You can then see the preview of each thumbnail of the video you want that have been saved during the indexing process of the videos. Save screenshot after - default is 30 seconds, this feature allows you to capture the first video frame based on the time (seconds). Then save every - save video frame based upon the seconds set right after the first video frame has been captured. Resize screenshots - default is 160 pixels, which is, a comfortable size but please use what you feel gives the best experience.

3.8.3 Video Player tab

Video Start Offset - this is where the movie starts in seconds from the real beginning of the video. Typically this is a few seconds into the movie. Some videos stall if they are played from the very start because they have a bad first couple of frames. Video Start Offset is set to 4 on default.

Program Documentation Fast Video Cataloger

4 Version History
4.1 Fast Video Cataloger 1.31
Improved video capture to handles more bad files. There is now a timeout that will add a video even if video playback stalls during frame capture. Before these bad files would cause capture to freeze and you would need to click skip to get to the next video.

4.2 Fast Video Cataloger 1.3

4.2.1 Archive function
I have added a new video archive function. With archiving you can tag videos to specific storage media. You can also move the videos files to the media as they are tagged, for example if you want to archive videos to an external drive. You can easily browse all videos on a specific media through the expanded search function that now also support archives.

4.2.2 Program asks for path to missing videos

When you play a video and the path is no longer valid you will now get a dialog asking you where the file is now. When you have provided the new path the program will play the video from there but it will not update the catalog. This is useful if you share a catalog through a network drive and want the videos to be played from the shared folder as well. Or if you have your catalog on an external drive and the drive letter is different on different computers.

4.2.3 Path mapping

In preferences you can provide a local mapping for how to translate a path to a new path. This mapping is only local to the computer where you set it up and will not alter the catalog. This is very useful if you are sharing a catalog between different computers where the root paths to your videos are different. I do recommend that you build your entire video catalog from one root folder. Personally I store my catalog at the root and then have different sub folders for where I keep the videos in the catalog.

20

Program Documentation Fast Video Cataloger

4.2.4 Keywording
When you play a video by clicking on a thumbnail that thumbnail/scene is selected. This means that the last scene you played from will be the one you tag in the keywording pane. In earlier version when it was not selected the tags would hold for the whole video. I also fixed a bug where you could not remove a keyword set to a specific scene.

4.2.5 Searching
When searching for scenes the suggestion box will now only show tags that have been used for tagging specific scenes and not for whole videos. The drop down list used to filter videos now only contains tags used to tags whole videos. It will not show tags that so far have only been used to tag individual scenes. These changes avoid searches that would not empty results and makes it easier to find relevant tags.

4.2.6 Video List

The video list now also contains the video file path, time the video was added and link. These are to the right of the other columns so you will need to resize the video list window to be able to see them. You can change the order of the columns with drag n drop and you can change the width of each column.

4.2.7 Video player

The seek bar below the video now also has a two text fields with the current time to the left of the seek bar and the total time to the right.

4.2.8 New Video formats

Fast video cataloger now recognizes xmf and ogm as video formats. To be able to use these formats you will need to have codecs installed or more precisely you need a directshow splitter that recognize these container formats.

4.3 Fast Video Cataloger 1.2

4.3.1 User interface
Removed the tabs from the front screen and moved the functionality to buttons on the right. Because of this it is now possible to see the info about video/actors/tags at the same time as thumbnails. And when you hide them we have more space for thumbnails. I also think the flow of the program is much more natural.

4.3.2 Tagging
Added the new keywording page. This is the new unified way to tag videos as well as thumbnails. It is now possible to tag single thumbnails as well as whole videos. If no thumbnail is selected the tags are added to the whole video. If a thumbnail is selected the tag is applied to the selected thumbs. Add and remove from the selection by holding ctrl when clicking just outside the thumbnail image. Fixed bug with removal of tags. When entering a new tag you can add it right away with enter and the cursor is still in the tag window making it faster to add tags by typing.

4.3.3 Searching
Added new tab and view for searching tagged scenes/thumbnails. Now its possible to get thumbnails from many different videos on one screen. Say for example you are an effect artist with tagged frames of explosions across many different videos. Now you can get all explosion shots on one screen and play the different videos right away. Search strings accept space for multi word tags. Use + or , as separator between keywords. If you search for more than one keyword your result will include all hits for all keywords (OR search). Search on tags window for source tags did not have a scroll bar making it hard to add tags if you used had a lot of tags to choose from. Search dialog can now be resized.

4.4 Fast Video Cataloger 1.1

4.4.1 Actors
Fixed so that the name and description of an actor can include the quote () character.

4.4.2 Add videos

The Add video dialog can now be resized to show more of long video paths. When you add videos you now see if the video is already in the catalog. Right click to remove videos you do not want to add again. If you add a video that is already cataloged the video data will be merged. Ie it will have all the thumbs of the newly indexed video and all previous thumbnails, it will have its previous tags and any new tags you add. You can now select more than one video to remove with right click You can sort on the columns in the video to be added table. Useful for example if you want to remove all videos that are already in the catalog.

4.4.3 Video indexing

When a video fails to index the reason for the failure is set as a tooltip in the list for the failed video. Hover over the video path to see the error. Added a new button for failed videos to open a help page. This will only be visible if a video fails to index. To show the help page you need an internet connection as the help is taken from our servers. Failed videos now have a context menu where you can play it in an external player, edit it with an external tool or just open the folder where the video is.
