Research Activities
Research is key in advancing the field of life sciences and as such, the faculty members of Taylors School of Biosciences actively conduct fundamental and applied research to discover new knowledge. They also apply their in-depth knowledge and skills to continually enhance the quality and relevance of the Schools curriculum.
Research in the School of Biosciences encompasses four broad themes and is supported by a core group of researchers in bioactive compounds (Centre for Drug Discovery & Development): Infectious Diseases Lifestyle Diseases Environmental Science Food Science and Technology These areas are important because they address pertinent issues in human health and sustainability. Current work emphasises fundamental research activities that will allow a better understanding of cancer, infectious diseases and lifestyle diseases via the use of molecular and cellular biology techniques. This will be complemented with research in bioactive natural products, particularly for medicinal and nutraceutical uses to treat and prevent diseases. Ultimately, the main goal is to improve human health and identify affordable alternative therapies. Environmental research will focus on developing mechanisms to save energy resources and use biological indicators to monitor and detect the source of microbial contaminants in our water and food systems.
We have established research clusters based on our facultys interests and expertise:
1. Infectious Diseases
Host-pathogen interaction Biofilm Antimicrobial agents
2. Lifestyle Diseases
Molecular mechanisms of cancer Signal transduction inhibitors Bioactive compounds in micro-organisms/edible plant extracts Anti-infective agents
Our School plays a major role in the Clinical, Life & Behavioral Sciences Research Centre (CLIBER), which creates research synergy among behavioral, clinical and life sciences units at Taylors. CLIBER engages in joint and collaborative research with other academic institutions, hospitals and corporations.
