Finance Committee Volunteers Sought

The Board of Directors is soliciting volunteer candidates to serve on the Resident Finance Committee. The committee works closely with the Staff in reviewing the financial operations of the Community Association. This includes the monthly financial review process, the Reserve Study and reserve investment process, the Annual Audit, and Operating Budget process. The Board of Directors anticipates filling vacancies on the Finance Committee effective November 1, 2012. Committee members can anticipate attending the Monthly Finance Committee Meeting, currently held on the second Thursday of each month in the Sage Center Conference Room. In addition, there will be situational meetings to discuss budgets, audits, and other community financial topics. Resident members in good standing who are interested in serving on the Resident Finance Committee should submit a short application letter requesting the appointment to the Committee. In this letter, the individual should outline their qualifications and experience, and express why they desire to serve on the Committee. All application letters should be addressed to the Community Manager, Bruce Friedman at hbfriedman@aamaz.com or by mail to the Sage Recreation Center. The deadline for application letters is September 15, 2012, so interested residents should get their letters to Bruce at their earliest convenience.

Two-person teams alternate their shots while the high-scoring teams are eliminated on each hole until there are only three teams left. Out of those three teams, we will award a Win (1st Place), Place (2nd Place), and a Show (3rd Place). Serious golfers should leave their sensitive side at home for this event; we like to have fun! SOS House Light Operation Resealing & Restriping of Softball Field/ Wood Shop & Crafts Studio Parking Lots
The Softball Field/Wood Shop and Crafts Studio road and parking lots will be closed on August 23 beginning at 5 am and will remain closed until 10 am on August 24th due to sealing and restriping of these areas. We appreciate your understanding as we complete the scheduled maintenance on these asphalt areas. In order to answer some recent questions about the SOS Lights installed in homes within Sun City Festival, we offer this information on the operation and use of them. Located on the wall next to the front door of each home in the community is a special light switch that, when activated, causes the exterior coach lights that flank the garage door to flash. This light switch is identified by the red indicator light on the switch itself. The proper operation of this switch is to activate it only AFTER having placed a call for emergency services (police, fire, ambulance, etc.). The light, when activated, will assist the emergency service provider to easily locate your home. Turning on the lights WILL NOT, however, summon an emergency responder. This light SHOULD NOT be used for any other purpose, as doing so will confuse police patrols as well as Citizens on Patrol. If you inadvertently turn the SOS lights on, simply turn them off again.

Turning Back The Hands Of Time

We have many different signs of aging. Most signs are visual color and quantity of hair, skin wrinkles, etc. However, when it comes to health and functioning at a younger chronological age, whats inside our body is most critical. Heart, lungs, brain and other organs are what we truly want to be young. Some psychologists suggest functional decline is not a necessary process of aging, but rather a function of attitude and action. At a certain age, we expect to fall apart, so we allow ourselves to fall apart says Harvard professor Ellen Langer. A few simple steps can be by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S., taken to minimize the aging process from within.
Fitness/Wellness Director

The Brain: Around age 25, the human brain begins to slowly decrease in size. With the size decrease comes less efficient nerve signaling bringing decline in comprehension, retention and reasoning. The good news is we can do things to help formation of myelin, the white matter helping to conduct nerve impulses. Practicing anything which combines learning and physical activity can help brain function, i.e.: bowling, juggling and others. Just doing the activity 20-30 minutes a few days a week can help regain the brain function. The Lungs: Without smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke, lung function can decline by age 40. Alveoli, sacs in the lungs allowing exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, begin to lose surface area and thus efficiency. Researchers and physicians have determined vitamins D and A in fortified dairy products such as yogurt, cottage cheese and reduced-fat milk help the lungs function better and help production of lung tissue. The Heart: Around age 40, the heart begins to shrink in size and tissues of the aorta become stiffer and more fibrous. As a result, the heart must work harder to pump blood. Every minute of cardiovascular exercise helps to prevent and reverse the aging process of the heart. Recent research showed 30 minutes on a treadmill three times each week at a steady, honest effort improved blood flow and increased cells which repair artery walls. In addition, adding intervals of higher intensity exercise boosts arterial flexibility. Bones: Supportive material inside bones can shrink by 30% between ages 25 and 50. At 65 even more bone degeneration takes place as the minerals decrease. According to Bahram Arjmandi, Ph.D., Chairman of Florida State University Department of Nutrition, prunes are very effective in preserving bone mass and reversing bone loss. Polyphenols and antioxidant properties in prunes increase the magnesium content in bones maintaining bone strength and density. Fighting the aging process is not just a matter of hair dye and Botox. Taking the right steps can help maintain long-term internal youth, as well.
