Folsom
Cappuccino Cruisers Classic Car Club holds their annual Graffiti Night, Sizzling on Sutter Street in Folsom from noon to 7 p.m. Aug. 18. Graffiti Night turns Sutter Street back to the 1960s and this year promoters are also reuniting radio DJs from the era. Ray Marchese, one of the organizers, said they are excited about this years show. This year were looking at spotlighting local car builders, Marchese said. Looking at how many we get, well be putting them in the 600 block of Sutter Street (on the upper end). He said its looking like the event will be popular. We expect a good turnout. We already have people registering for the show, he said. This year were changing things up and will put The 8 Track band in the Hacienda lot. Our sound booth will have our back to Hop Sings Restaurant (in the 800 block). The Re-runs will probably be in the new plaza area (near the Folsom Telegraph office in the 900 block). Well have a lot of new picks (for awards) such as the Police Chief pick and City Council pick. We have support from

some of the merchants, he said. The proceeds from the event will be donated back to local organizations like the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary, Mercy Hospital, Folsom High Wrestling Team and police mounted patrol. Sutter Street will be closed for the event. The only area where there will be through traffic is Sutter and Riley with two uniformed police officers, Marchese said. The event is open to any automobile made prior to 1974 and no motorcycles or that type of stuff. Well see cars from all over. For more information, call (916) 988-6376 or visit capcruz.com. If you cant make it to Graffiti Night, they also hold a car show from 5-9 p.m. every Wednesday through October at the Red Robin on Riley Street in Folsom. classic cars and thousands of people who love them to four blocks of Lincoln Way in Auburn from 5 to 9 p.m. on the second Friday of each month between May and September. The next scheduled Cruise Nites are Aug. 10 and Sept. 14. The event started in 1984 in the parking lot of Fosters Freeze, where car aficionados would show off their sweet rides. Now the event packs throngs of residents and visitors alike to Lincoln Way. I am just amazed at the quality of cars, said Cruise Nite co-chair Bob Kennedy. They bring them out of the woodwork. The cars come from far beyond Auburn, as Cruise Nite is a popular draw for car enthusiasts because they dont have to pay to enter. While a few awards are given, such as Best Stock and Best Modified, the point of the show is to give families and car lovers a fun way to spend their Friday evening. You can hardly walk down the street, said cochair Jack Kenny, who added that dogs are not allowed at the event, per the event permit from the city. Each Cruise Nite draws thousands of people, organizers said, with the most popular being the kickoff show and the September event, which includes a 9-11 memorial ceremony. The vehicles are from 1972 and older, and the only stipulation is that no motorcycles are allowed. People bring cars, trucks and even vintage fire engines to the show, although organizers request they be informed ahead of time if a vehicle will require more than one parking space. Kennedy said people can expect to see cars as old as Model Ts, and in all stages of restoration. Some guys bring their cars down there and the
paints all faded and rusty, he smiled. We dont care. Were not there to judge what theyre driving; we just like seeing the old cars out there on the road. Still, the majority of the classic cars are in pristine condition, with some so exquisite they hardly ever touch pavement. Theres a couple of guys who have really classic cars theyll trailer them, park the truck and trailer on a side street and drive their car in because theyre that restored, that pristine, Kennedy said. Some of these cars, they dont see the street. Visitors can enjoy several food vendors, including hamburgers, hot dogs, Mexican food and kettle corn. Pistol Petes runs a beer booth, and a DJ will play rock and roll throughout the night. For more information, call (530) 887-1604 or (530) 878-7936.

there working not just mixing a couple songs together. Brown said he enjoys making a crowd happy with his music. I like making the crowd adapt to what Im playing rather than playing it safe and adapting to them, Brown said. Im about playing 80 percent of new tracks that the crowd may not recognize and 20 percent of what they already know. It allows them to learn new songs and genres. My philosophy is its OK to mix up genres and help people become more open minded about different music. He said he is known for creating his own mashup of music on the spot. I take two songs and let them play out for a period of time, Brown said. I never pre-plan my sets. I make up stuff on the spot for what Im feeling at a certain event. Brown got into DJing right out of college, because he was a competitive dancer for about 10 years, break dancing and house dancing. Through that lifestyle, he said he met people who inspired him to start DJing. I play on a turntable, but I use digital vinyl rather than vinyl records, he said. With todays technology, it seems that anyone can be a DJ. But, there is definitely a knowledge and skill level thats needed including understanding beat and music. Its important to understand technology, there has to be a passion there. You cant do this because its trendy and cool, but rather because you appreciate the art of DJing. Today, Brown has been

ugust is the perfect month to cross triathlon off your bucket list. The Folsom Olympic Triathlon, along with the Folsom Long Course Triathlon and the Folsom Sprint Triathlon, brings in nearly 1,500 participants between the three events, which are slated for Aug. 18-19 at Nimbus Flat State Park. For the younger athletes, the Iron Hills Youth Triathlon will be held Aug. 25 at the El Dorado Hills Community Services District. This event is for athletes 15 years old and younger. The Folsom Olympic Triathlon, which will be held at 7 a.m. on Aug. 19, is in its 10th year. While the event draws many people locally from Folsom and El Dorado Hills, as well as the Sacramento area, most of the competitors are from the Bay Area, according to Race Director Ryan Boelho. Id say 60 percent of the participants come from the Bay Area, Boelho said. Triathlon is the largest growing endurance sport and I hope to get at least 1,400 people up there, but so much is going on in August and on top of that people are taking vacations. Boelho, who works for USA Productions, puts on the event along with several other triathlons. The Folsom Olympic Triathlon represents the final race of the series in which the winner of the Triathlon Club Challenge is decided, another reason why the Folsom event is popular. Its not the only reason why its popular, though.
KNOW & GO
IRON HILLS YOUTH TRIATHLON When: Aug. 25 Where: El Dorado Hills
Community Services District Time: check-in begins 7 a.m., races start at 8:30 a.m.; 6-and-under race begins at 9:30 a.m.
The water is the biggest thing, Boelho said. The clean water coming out of the Sierras is great and its a beautiful venue. Many competitors enjoy flat and fast courses and the Folsom course is that. The weather is also beautiful. At the end of the day, the venue, the time of year and it being our final event make the event the cornerstone in our series.
The young competitors not only are competing against one another, but also have a challenging course in front of them. The youngest group, kids 6 and under, must swim 25 yards, bike six-tenths of a mile and run twotenths of a mile. The 7-8 and 9-10 athletes must swim 100 yards, bike 3.3 miles and run eighttenths of a mile, while the oldest group, the 11-12 and 13-15 years olds, swim 200 yards, bike 5.9 miles and run 1.4 miles. The top-three boys and girls in each division receive trophies. This is probably my favorite event to put on, Drybread said. I love to see the kids doing something other than the typical ball sports. For kids that arent into team sports, this is a great way for them to challenge themselves, set goals and achieve. Teri Gotro, recreation supervisor at the El Dorado Hills Community Services District, added, Quite often its difficult to find these youth events, but the Iron Hills Youth Triathlon is an opportunity for young athletes to excel in several ... areas including swimming, biking and running. Drybread said many people like the closed course at the CSD, which keeps the athletes safe and also makes it easier for parents to watch their kids participate. The course is also a little more challenging than other kids races and thats another reason why kids like this event, Drybread said.

riving down Auburn Folsom Road just past Douglas Boulevard, it might be too easy to pass this one up. But if you look closely, or you know where to go, an unassuming manor that once housed a French bistro, a market cafe and even a biker bar has been turned into something new. Ian and NGina Kavookjian, owners of Eight, have turned the building into an American bistro, serving up fresh, local ingredients in thoughtful and approachable fashion. The new restaurant celebrated its grand opening in late June, with its namesake inspired by the number of years the owners have been working to open an establishment to call their own. With more than 35 years combined experience in the restaurant industry, the Kavookjians say they want to blend high-quality food with a casual atmosphere that is comfortable and inviting, whether you have just spent all day out on Folsom Lake or you are taking a date out for a fine meal and a fabulous bottle of wine. In a lot of restaurants, its either casual or it is fine dining, NGina Kavookjian said. Theres no blurring of the lines, and we didnt want to do that. Executive Chef Robert Birnschein is preparing smart American-style fare heavily influenced by Italian and French cuisine, with a serious emphasis on farm-totable freshness.

We want to expose the community to the beauty and the seasonality of food, Ian said. I know there are a lot of people who are really in tune with it and theres something great about that. NGina said the farmto-table concept is more than just a trend and the husband-and-wife team believes it is a concept that should be embraced worldwide. It makes no sense to buy products that are not within a 50- to 100-mile radius of where you live, she said. The owners of Eight say that not only does supporting local farmers ensure they are serving up the freshest ingredients, it also puts money right back into the community, which goes a long way to support the local economy. If we buy tomatoes from Mexico, that helps their economy, which is
all fine and good, NGina said. But I cant sit there and watch my neighbor who sells tomatoes suffer when I could be buying from him. Its that sense of community that people need to get back to. Lunches at Eight range from appetizers and salads to sandwiches and handmade pastas, with prices ranging from $7 to $22. Everything down to the ketchup and mayonnaise is made in-house from scratch. Dinner menu items start with appetizers at $7 and entrees averaging between $20 and $30. The couple has been operating a catering and wedding planning business since 2009 and say they chose to open their brick-and-mortar restaurant in Granite Bay because of the central location to the Sacramento valley and the Sierra foothills.

arah Boudjakdji has been cooking for as long as I can remember and have been working in restaurants for years. Sarah is Chef/ Owner of Willow Caf & Sweetery located at 13405 Folsom Blvd. Sarah has been on the job here in Folsom for five months and says the whole creative process, playing around with textures, flavors and colors to come up with something people will like. Is the best thing about being a chef. Cooking for me is my creative outlet. She goes on to say she likes being able to access some of the best ingredients, including grass-fed beef, free-range organic eggs and cage-free chickens.
One of her favorite things to do at Willow Caf & Sweetery is to experiment with gluten-free recipes. It is possible to be gluten free and still eat amazing baked goods, so I try my best to get it right so people dont have to feel like they are missing out. For Sarah the most challenging part of the job is the technical, behind the scenes parts of the job. Things like ordering, inventory, scheduling, anything that takes me out of the kitchen and out of that flow is hard. My heart is in the kitchen and being able to get to know my guests. As far as interests or hobbies Sarah admits that she doesnt have much time for anything else these days. She also has two young sons so the new restaurant and the kids keep her plenty busy.

his summer families can stroll Folsoms Historic District and pick out fresh produce grown locally for their dinner table in a laid back atmosphere. The El Dorado County Farm Trails farmers markets promote agriculture in El Dorado County and the surrounding Sacramento region and offer two Folsom markets to residents. We offer high quality fresh produce, and a fun time for everyone, said Seana Hartsell, Farm Trails market manager. This is a great family day, everyone knows each other and talks with the farmers. We have become our own community. Almost all of their farmers come from El Dorado County and each market includes about 20 different booths for locals to choose from, Hartsell said. We promote farming and the 100 mile diet, Hartsell said. That is where the food we provide doesnt have to travel more than 100 miles. Hartsell said their farmers are there the day of or before picking, and sell it freshly harvested. A lot of the time we are picking our berries the morning of the market, it doesnt get much fresher than that, Jean Reinders, berry farmer. Still, Hartsell said farmers just want to educate the public. We promote knowing where our food comes from, Hartsell said. The farmers will explain to customers what they are eating. ... Our farmers

know their food and what journey it has taken. They know how it was grown. She explained if you dont know about your food, you dont know what youre eating. So their farmers will explain to you about what you are choosing to put into your body. At the market in the Folsom Historic District, farmers offer produce, vegetables, fruits, berries, baked goods, meat, eggs, flowers and local honey. Eating local honey is very good for people with allergies, Hartsell said. When eating local honey, you are ingesting local pollen from local flowers that was harvested in the area you live. So it helps with controlling allergies. We specialize in the quality of the items. When you go there you get good quality food, and an education on the food that you are buying. mer. Loomis FamilyFest, held weekly at the Loomis Train Depot from 6 to 9:30 p.m., draws neighbors, friends and even folks from out of town who come to shop, eat, drink, relax, dance and visit. The event wraps up Aug. 9. Strolling through the festival on a warm summer evening with live music playing reminds people of how much they like living in a small town. They are just bound to run into someone they know. Marie Blomgren and Tim Plummer, both Del Oro High School graduates, started the event last year and continued it again this summer. Blomgren said, I just wanted to do something for our community, so people wouldnt have to leave town to have fun. She said shed never organized anything quite like FamilyFest, but Plummer used to do event planning for convention centers so he
mentored his friend Blomgren. Blomgren said this year the festival has a reputation and vendors are seeking her out, so she no longer has to scour the county. Dogs on leashes, babies in strollers, toddlers holding parents hands and kids with painted faces are all staples at FamilyFest. Daniel Outlaw, 21, a Del Oro grad and recent Cal Poly San Luis Obispo graduate, visited FamilyFest with his parents. He sat with them and enjoyed a locally brewed beer purchased from the Loomis Basin Soroptimist booth. Its pretty nice to be in a small town again, to see people I know, Outlaw

said. James Harlen, of Loomis, was showing his 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air at the car cruise-in held in the parking lot of Taylors restaurant as part of Familyfest. His was just one of many cool, classic and muscle cars on display. Marci Miller, of Marcis
Pony Pals, was selling tickets for children to ride her ponies. The riders were quite content to be sitting up high, strapped onto the ponies backs and walking in a circle. Mary Kay beauty consultant Jean Marchbanks, who used to live in Loomis stood at her pretty pink booth and chatted with passersby. Marchbanks wasnt selling anything, just offering an opportunity to sign up for a free microdermabrasion facial. This is a really nice community event. I see a lot of people I know and the food is really good, she said. For more information on FamilyFest, go to loomisfamilyfest.com.

love living in this region because there are so many options for day tripping. I thought a recent Saturday was going to be just another one of these exciting days, a bit of history, a nice hike and some beautiful scenery, but I had no idea the gold mine I was about to discover. Sutter Creek is only 45 minutes from Folsom and this community has it all. What was going to be a short trip turned into an all-day adventure in a charming little town along the Mother Lode. I found history, beauty beyond
description, world famous wine tasting rooms, interesting and unique shopping opportunities, architecture that dates back more than 125 years, food beyond description, world class bed and breakfasts, theaters and some of the nicest people I have ever met. Located in the Sierra foothills, historic Sutter Creek is a welcome retreat from the everyday bustle of life. Its in Amador County, very close to Jackson and to get there remember to drive to Highway 16, then Highway 49, but turn off the bypass and drive
about three miles down into Sutter Creek on Old Highway 49. Here are a few of the highlights of my trip. The history of the Gold Rush is probably best preserved in Sutter Creek in a vast array of historic buildings and homes. Dennis Price, a former school teacher and now full time guide, volunteer and history buff explains how people first panned for gold in the rivers and streams beginning in 1848. He talks about how John Sutter first arrived in the area from Switzerland in the 1840s and created an empire providing lumber to Sacramento. Then

drous works of art at Chaos Glassworks, where David and Heather Hopman create incredible pieces of art. Gallery 10 features all local artists, while Fine Eye Gallery, located in the old mercantile building for the past 22 years and home of dozens of California artists, features ceramics, glass, and contemporary American art.
A visit with Michael Harvill of BellaGrace Winery gave an overview of why the wines in Amador County are far superior than others in the region. BellaGrace, winner of two awards in the 2012 California State Fair (2010 Barbera and 2011 Grenache Blanc), explains, every bottle bearing the BellaGrace label reflects our funda-
mental philosophy of doing things right at every step of the winemaking process from vine to bottle. BellaGrace is one of four wine tasting rooms that offer free wine tasting along Historic Sutter Creek. Theater is brought back to life at the Sutter Creek Theatre presenting contemporary and tradi-
tional music, theatrical performances, dance, film, and other artistic events that are engaging to the diverse regional audience. Owned by Laura and Byron Damiani Jr., the theater is a complete multipurpose entertainment venue that hosts events year-round. Although there are a number of wonderful restaurants dont pass up

Thomi Manzano has operated her small restaurant with ample seating inside and out for seven years and you always know you are in good hands when you find the place the locals love to gather.
