When you thought booting up was going so well - Stop Message – 0x0000001E appears.

This can appear when you have booted up Windows XP after installing new hardware. You may also
see in brackets STOP: 0x0000001E (0x80000003, 0xBFC0304, 0x0000000, 0x0000001)

It's a real pain! You come home with your new Nvidia GeForce 8800 graphics card (Not that I
have one) or any other piece of new shiny hardware you have saved up and bought. You very carefully
Install it, making sure you use an Anti-Static wristband and/or Anti-Static mat. After installation you
switch on your PC and after everything seems fine you get this infuriating screen.

Don't you just love computers!

What's causing this? I'm glad you asked - Good question.

Stop errors can be caused by a wide variety of things such as faulty hardware (hope not if you bought
that Nvidia!). Overclocking/overheating issues (You really need to know what you are doing). Or

software trying to do things it was not instructed to do. When you see the screen above, the Blue
Screen of Death, Windows enters its Debug Screen or Mode to help (Ha, thats a good one!)
troubleshoot and displays an error on your screen.

A couple of things to do.

First – It is important to note down a few things you see on the Blue Screen of Death (I love that!)
If a system file is mentioned like ntoskrnl.exe – Note it down.

Second – Take note of the eight digit hex number such as 0x0000001E, also the error message –
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Third – To get a complete picture of what is happening you can go to Microsoft Online Knowledge
Base - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=FH;EN-US;KBHOWTO

But you are reading this so that you don't have to go to that link. Yet!

Lets get the whole stop message. You will probably see this:-

STOP:0x0000001E (0x80000003, 0xBFC0304, 0x0000000, 0x0000001)

Then some stuff beneath it

You have to remember that it can never be straight forward finding out what has caused this error.
Some other causes apart from the mentioned could be:-
There is insufficient disk space on the drive in which you installed Windows XP
(Why would you install XP on a low capacity disk anyway?)

There is an outdated or incompatible third-party driver or drivers installed on your computer –

Again a faulty video driver or something similar.
(Who do you blame for this one?)

There are System BIOS incompatibilities.

(That would really tick me off – In my opinion all System BIOS
should be compatible with the OS you are installing.)

The solution (or Possible solutions)

To the first one is simple – Free up some disk space but then again you should install Windows XP
on a newly formated disk with plenty of space. C drive being in its own partition. But make sure
that partition has plenty of space. I would recommend 15 – 20 Gigabytes of free space.

The second one is interesting – If the STOP 0x0000001E or STOP 0x1E error message lists a driver
by name, (which would be wonderful!) Simply, disable or remove that driver. If this resolves that issue
and it should, then try and find the latest version of that driver to install.
No doubt that if there is a latest version, the manufacturer will be aware of the error, so issuing another
new version of that driver.

But beings Sods Law, it probably won't list the problem causing driver. If that is the case, (and you and
I know that will be the case), you have to play put on your Deer Stalker and play detective to try and
find the culprit.
One way of doing this is boot up again and before you get the Windows XP logo on screen, Press F8,
which should give you a menu, choose Safe Mode.

This will boot Windows XP into your desktop with very few drivers loaded and no Internet, just the
minimum so that you get the GUI up and running. This way you can disable the drivers and work your
way through the problem until you successfully find the culprit.
You could use Last Know Good Configuration IF you had a working system, you then installed the
driver/software, you then got BLUE SCREEN of DEATH and this is the first time you are rebooting.
If you choose that option Windows XP will revert back to the working system.

Thirdly – Upgrade your BIOS – This can be tricky if you do not know what you are doing. You have
to go to the manufacturer's website of your Motherboard and find out the instructions there. They all
have different ways of doing it and is beyond the scope of this tutorial.

You could also download Microsoft's Debugging Tool – Just go to:-

More Informaton
The STOP 0x1E error message (also known as a bug check code) indicates that the Windows XP
kernel detected an illegal or unknown processor instruction. The exception address usually identifies
the driver or faulty hardware that caused the issue.

Microsoft has helped by providing information about Manufacturers. (That was nice of them.)

components, click the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the
