This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee MS/5, Institutional
Supplies. It is one of a series of Standards for surgical dressings and kindred products.
In preparing the Standard, consideration was given to the requirements of the British,
European and United States Pharmacopoeias.

1 SCOPE This Standard sets out requirements for single-use packing gauze for
surgical use. It applies to sterile and non-sterile gauze and gauze that incorporates X-ray
detectable markers.

3 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard the definitions below apply.
3.1 Packing gauze—a white woven packing gauze, with folded edges that is supplied in
various lengths and widths for surgical use.
3.2 Packs
3.2.1 Unit packs — a pack containing a stated number of the particular packing gauze,
the pack provides a microbial barrier for its contents.
3.2.2 Multiple packs — an outer container for use with a convenient number of unit
packs, or non-sterile lengths of packing gauze, which is sufficiently robust to protect the
unit packs from damage and contamination during normal storage, transport and handling.
3.2.3 Store pack—a pack containing one or more multiple packs.
3.3 X-ray detectable marker —a monofilament thread or multifilament yarn or printed
continuous strip, which is opaque to X-rays.
3.4 X-ray detectable packing gauze—a packing gauze which incorporates an X-ray
detectable marker.
