Cyberbullying Prevention Lesson Plan Created by Bobie Glassett and Molly Kendall Language Arts Grade 7 Objective Students

will be able to define and identify characteristics and behaviors of a cyberbully. Assess whether or not they or their friends are being a cyberbully. Be able to appropriately respond and end cyberbullying behaviors. 1. Define cyberbully. 2. Have students complete a self-analysis. 3. Teach students the steps to take if they are a bully, if someone they know is a bully, if they are being bullied, and what to do to stop the problem. 1. We learn lots of new words in school. Today is no different. Todays word is cyberbully. Provide the definition of a cyberbully. 2. What forms might cyberbullying take? (http:// cyberbullying.org, click on Examples) 3. Discuss the similarities and differences of a bully and cyberbully. Complete Venn Diagram. 4. Online: Have students complete the Are you a Cyberbully? self-assessment (http://www.stopcyberbullying.org/tweens/ are_you_a_cyberbully.html). Presentation (Movie clips and power point downloaded from http://www.netsmartz.org/presentations/): What can be done about cyberbulling? 1. Online Video Clips: Show students examples and nonexamples of cyberbullying, the effect it can have on peoples lives, and the consequences of participating. 2. Model several responses and appropriate ways to handle different types of cyberbullying. 1. Role Play scenarios and read scripts of situations where cyberbullying is present. 2. Ask for volunteers. Checking For Understanding 1. Hold a class discussion. Review main concepts. Explain importance of understanding the effects of cyberbullying. 2. Take students to the computer lab and instruct them to complete one or all of the following interactive quizzes: a. BrainPOP (http://www.brainpop.com/technology/ computersandinternet/cyberbullying/quiz/) b. Channel One News (http://www.channelone.com/news/quiz_cyberbullies/1.htm) c. Carnegie Mellon Institute (http://www.carnegiecyberacademy.com/funStuff/stuartScout/ stuartScout_eps1.html) Students will create a multimedia presentation to demonstrate what they have learned about cyberbullying. Their projects must include a definition, characteristics/behaviors associated with cyberbullying, how to stop cyberbullying if they or someone they know are being targeted, how to avoid being a bully, and the effects cyberbullying can have on other peoples lives. Students may choose to create a glogster, vimeo, or prezi. Students will present their multimedia presentations to the class. Review main concepts as a class.
